Abstract
Nanocrystalline silicon nanoparticles with a median crystallite size of 3-4 nm and several crystalline phases and defects (e.g. twin boundary) were produced by femtosecond laser processing of a SiO2/Si target in various organic fluids. Furthermore, a nanoscaled amorphous oxide layer and a few atomic layers of a graphite shell were detected in ethanol and 2-butanol correspondingly. The ultrafast laser pulses may manipulate nanostructures at the atomic level and generate a high density of defects; this may be correlated with significant thermal stresses on nanoparticles and rapid condensation of primary nanoparticles with high cooling rates. Size distribution width and a polydispersity index slightly increased with increasing laser fluence in ethanol. In 2-butanol, the maximum ablation volume was observed. The specific ablation rates in 2-butanol and ethanol were approximately five times higher than n-hexane. The lowest ablation efficiency in n-hexane can be associated with femtosecond laser-induced photolysis and pyrolysis of solvent molecules, as total energy deposition on the material may be reduced due to the formation of carbonaceous products. The roughened zones (average roughness of ∼400 nm) in circumferences of the ablated craters in 2-butanol may be related to a correlation between the erosive power of the vapour bubble collapse and higher pressure at the bubble wall in relatively high dynamic viscosity fluids. Furthermore, sputtering of a pristine surface by releasing nanoparticles from the collective collapse of up-flow vapour bubbles can also contribute to the generation of roughened regions.

Abstract
A facial and large-scale compatible fabrication route is established, affording a high-performance heterogeneous plasmonic-based photoelectrode for water oxidation that incorporates a CoFe-Prussian blue analog (PBA) structure as the water oxidation catalytic center. For this purpose, an angled deposition of gold (Au) was used to selectively coat the tips of the bismuth vanadate (BiVO4 ) nanostructures, yielding Au-capped BiVO4 (Au-BiVO4 ). The formation of multiple size/dimension Au capping islands provides strong light-matter interactions at nanoscale dimensions. These plasmonic particles not only enhance light absorption in the bulk BiVO4 (through the excitation of Fabry-Perot (FP) modes) but also contribute to photocurrent generation through the injection of sub-band-gap hot electrons. To substantiate the activity of the photoanodes, the interfacial electron dynamics are significantly improved by using a PBA water oxidation catalyst (WOC) resulting in an Au-BiVO4 /PBA assembly. At 1.23 V (vs. RHE), the photocurrent value for a bare BiVO4 photoanode was obtained as 190 μA cm-2 , whereas it was boosted to 295 μA cm-2 and 1800 μA cm-2 for Au-BiVO4 and Au-BiVO4 /PBA, respectively. Our results suggest that this simple and facial synthetic approach paves the way for plasmonic-based solar water splitting, in which a variety of common metals and semiconductors can be employed in conjunction with catalyst designs.

Temperature-dependent photoluminescence properties of porous fluorescent SiC. Sci Rep 2019; 9:16333. Abstract
A comprehensive study of surface passivation effect on porous fluorescent silicon carbide (SiC) was carried out to elucidate the luminescence properties by temperature dependent photoluminescence (PL) measurement. The porous structures were prepared using an anodic oxidation etching method and passivated by atomic layer deposited (ALD) Al2O3 films. An impressive enhancement of PL intensity was observed in porous SiC with ALD Al2O3, especially at low temperatures. At temperatures below 150 K, two prominent PL emission peaks located at 517 nm and 650 nm were observed. The broad emission peak at 517 nm was attributed to originate from the surface states in the porous structures, which was supported by X-ray photoelectron spectra characterization. The emission peak at 650 nm is due to donor-acceptor-pairs (DAP) recombination via nitrogen donors and boron-related double D-centers in fluorescent SiC substrates. The results of the present work suggest that the ALD Al2O3 films can effectively suppress the non-radiative recombination for the porous structures on fluorescent SiC. In addition, we provide the evidence based on the low-temperature time-resolved PL that the mechanism behind the PL emission in porous structures is mainly related to the transitions via surface states.

Abstract
The emission of silicon nanocrystals (Si-NCs), synthesized by pulsed laser ablation in water, was investigated on varying the pH of the solution. These samples emit μs decaying orange photoluminescence (PL) associated with radiative recombination of quantum-confined excitons. Time-resolved spectra reveal that both the PL intensity and the lifetime increase by a factor of ∼20 when the pH decreases from 10 to 1 thus indicating that the emission quantum efficiency increases by inhibiting nonradiative decay rates. Infrared (IR) absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments allow addressing the origin of defects on which the excitons nonradiatively recombine. The linear correlation between the PL and the growth of SiH groups demonstrates that H+ ions passivate the nonradiative defects that are located in the interlayer between the Si-NC core and the amorphous SiO2 shell.

Abstract
Here, we report the synthesis of vanadium diselenide (VSe2) three-dimensional nanoparticles (NPs) and two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets (NSs) utilizing nanosecond pulsed laser ablation technique followed by liquid-phase exfoliation. Furthermore, a systematic study has been conducted on the effect of NP and NS morphologies of VSe2 in their catalytic activities toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under alkaline, neutral, and acidic conditions. Research on VSe2 clearly demonstrates that these morphologies do not have a significant difference for ORR and OER; however, a drastic effect of morphology was observed for HER. The ORR activity of both NSs and NPs involves ∼2.85 numbers of electrons with the Tafel slope of 120 mV/dec in alkaline and neutral pH. In alkaline solution, NPs are proved to be an efficient catalyst for OER with an onset potential 1.5 V; however, for HER, NSs have a better onset potential of -0.25 V. Moreover, the obtained NPs have also better catalytic activity with a 400 mV anodic shift in the onset potential compared to NSs. These results provide a reference point for the future application of VSe2 in energy storage and conversion devices and mass production of other 2D materials.

White Light Emission from Fluorescent SiC with Porous Surface. Sci Rep 2017; 7:9798. Abstract
ABSTARCT We report for the first time a NUV light to white light conversion in a N-B co-doped 6H-SiC (fluorescent SiC) layer containing a hybrid structure. The surface of fluorescent SiC sample contains porous structures fabricated by anodic oxidation method. After passivation by 20 nm thick Al2O3, the photoluminescence intensity from the porous layer was significant enhanced by a factor of more than 12. Using a porous layer of moderate thickness (~10 µm), high-quality white light emission was realized by combining the independent emissions of blue-green emission from the porous layer and yellow emission from the bulk fluorescent SiC layer. A high color rendering index of 81.1 has been achieved. Photoluminescence spectra in porous layers fabricated in both commercial n-type and lab grown N-B co-doped 6H-SiC show two emission peaks centered approximately at 460 nm and 530 nm. Such blue-green emission phenomenon can be attributed to neutral oxygen vacancies and interface C-related surface defects generated dring anodic oxidation process. Porous fluorescent SiC can offer a great flexibility in color rendering by changing the thickness of porous layer and bulk fluorescent layer. Such a novel approach opens a new perspective for the development of high performance and rare-earth element free white light emitting materials.
