First-principles study on the electronic properties of biphenylene, net-graphene, graphene+, and T-graphene based nanoribbons

Since the successful separation of graphene, carbon materials with the excellent physical and chemical properties have attracted the interest of a large number of researchers. In this paper, density functional theory combined with non-equilibrium Green's function is used to systematically study the electronic structures of two-dimensional biphenylene, net-graphene, graphene+ and T-graphene, and to reveal the electron transport properties of net-graphene nanodevices under asymmetric regulation. The results show that biphenylene, net-graphene, graphene+, and T-graphene all show metallic properties, in which biphenylene and net-graphene show anisotropy, while graphene+ and T-graphene show isotropy. In addition, for the one-dimensional new carbon based nanoribbons, except for the armchair-edged net-graphene and biphenylene nanoribbons, which exhibit semiconductor properties and a band gap value of 0.08 eV, the rest of the carbon nanoribbons display metal properties. Interestingly, two of them showed a tendency to oscillate and decrease the band gap value with increasing width, while BPN-2 biphenylene nanoribbons directly changed from exhibiting semiconductor to metallic properties with increasing width combination with no oscillation. The electronic transport properties of net-graphene nanoribbons based nanodevice models for electrons transform along zigzag and armchair directions are systematically studied. An obvious negative differential resistance characteristic along the armchair and zigzag directions can be found. Overall, these interesting results show that these new net-graphene nanodevices have good practical application prospects in future electronic nanodevices.

Analytical investigation of multi-layered rollable displays considering nonlinear elastic adhesive interfaces

To design the multilayered structures of reliable rollable displays, finite element method (FEM) investigations are conducted at various rolling conditions. Given that the optically clear adhesive (OCA) is the only flexible component and interfacial layer that plays an important role in allowing flexibility in rollable displays, we investigated its nonlinear elastic properties in detail. Hereto, FEM of rollable displays have been limited and inaccurate because OCA has been assumed to be a linear elastic material. In addition, despite the fact that rolling deformation exhibits complex bending characteristics, unlike folding, the mechanical behaviors over the entire area of rollable displays at all positions have not yet been addressed. In this study, we describe the dynamic and mechanical characteristics of rollable displays at all positions considering the hyperelastic and viscoelastic properties of OCA. The maximum normal strain of the rollable displays was applied about 0.98%, and the maximum shear strain of the OCA was shown to be around 720%. To assess the stability of the rollable displays, normal and yield strains were compared to each layer and investigated. Consequently, mechanical modeling of the rollable displays was conducted and stable rolling behaviors that did not cause permanent deformation were investigated.

Flexible Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) Atomic Layers for Wearable Electronics and Optoelectronics

Flexible, stretchable, and bendable materials, including inorganic semiconductors, organic polymers, graphene, and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), are attracting great attention in such areas as wearable electronics, biomedical technologies, foldable displays, and wearable point-of-care biosensors for healthcare. Among a broad range of layered TMDs, atomically thin layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) has been of particular interest, due to its exceptional electronic properties, including tunable bandgap and charge carrier mobility. MoS₂ atomic layers can be used as a channel or a gate dielectric for fabricating atomically thin field-effect transistors (FETs) for electronic and optoelectronic devices. This review briefly introduces the processing and spectroscopic characterization of large-area MoS₂ atomically thin layers. The review summarizes the different strategies in enhancing the charge carrier mobility and switching speed of MoS₂ FETs by integrating high-κ dielectrics, encapsulating layers, and other 2D van der Waals layered materials into flexible MoS₂ device structures. The photoluminescence (PL) of MoS₂ atomic layers has, after chemical treatment, been dramatically improved to near-unity quantum yield. Ultraflexible and wearable active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AM-OLED) displays and wafer-scale flexible resistive random-access memory (RRAM) arrays have been assembled using flexible MoS₂ transistors. The review discusses the overall recent progress made in developing MoS₂ based flexible FETs, OLED displays, nonvolatile memory (NVM) devices, piezoelectric nanogenerators (PNGs), and sensors for wearable electronic and optoelectronic devices. Finally, it outlines the perspectives and tremendous opportunities offered by a large family of atomically thin-layered TMDs.
