Static and dynamic behaviour of responsive graphene oxide-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) composite gels

A temperature-controlled electric field sample environment for small-angle neutron scattering experiments

A new sample environment is introduced for the study of soft matter samples in electric fields using small-angle neutron scattering instruments. The sample environment is temperature controlled and features external electrodes, allowing standard quartz cuvettes to be used and conducting samples or samples containing ions to be investigated without the risk of electrochemical reactions occurring at the electrodes. For standard 12.5 mm quartz cuvettes, the maximum applied field is 8 kV/cm, and the applied field may be static or alternating (up to 10 kHz for 8 kV/cm and up to 60 kHz for 4 kV/cm). The electric fields within the sample are calculated and simulated under a number of different conditions, and the capabilities of the setup are demonstrated using a variety of liquid crystalline samples. Measurements were performed as a function of temperature and time spent in the electric field. Finally, the advantages, drawbacks, and potential optimization of the sample environment are discussed with reference to applications in the fields of complex soft matter, biology, and electrorheology.

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-Based Thermoresponsive Composite Hydrogels for Biomedical Applications

Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM)-based thermosensitive hydrogels demonstrate great potential in biomedical applications. However, they have inherent drawbacks such as low mechanical strength, limited drug loading capacity and low biodegradability. Formulating PNIPAM with other functional components to form composited hydrogels is an effective strategy to make up for these deficiencies, which can greatly benefit their practical applications. This review seeks to provide a comprehensive observation about the PNIPAM-based composite hydrogels for biomedical applications so as to guide related research. It covers the general principles from the materials choice to the hybridization strategies as well as the performance improvement by focusing on several application areas including drug delivery, tissue engineering and wound dressing. The most effective strategies include incorporation of functional inorganic nanoparticles or self-assembled structures to give composite hydrogels and linking PNIPAM with other polymer blocks of unique properties to produce copolymeric hydrogels, which can improve the properties of the hydrogels by enhancing the mechanical strength, giving higher biocompatibility and biodegradability, introducing multi-stimuli responsibility, enabling higher drug loading capacity as well as controlled release. These aspects will be of great help for promoting the development of PNIPAM-based composite materials for biomedical applications.

Structure and dynamics of titania - poly(N-vinyl caprolactam) composite hydrogels

The morphologies and dynamics of poly(N-vinyl caprolactam) (PVCL) based hydrogels with titania nanoparticles in different states (native, air-dried to a constant weight and swollen in H₂O or D₂O) are studied by a combination of complementary techniques: wide angle X-ray scattering, small angle neutron scattering, neutron spin echo spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry. The results suggest the presence of different structural types of water leading to different properties of the hydrogels. We propose a hierarchical structure of hydrogels spanning from the molecular to the microscopic scale consistent with both the static structure (polymer mesh size, association of the nodes of crosslinks and microchains of PVCL) and the dynamics (rate of relaxation of polymer chains, hydrodynamic polymer-polymer correlation length). The presence of nanoscale titania does not change the molecular structure and nanostructure due to its aggregation into meso-domains, but does affect the microstructure, changing the response rate to a temperature jump from 20 to 50 °C. Titania nanoparticles do not change the equilibrium swelling degree of hydrogels.

Synthesis and physico-chemical properties of poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone)-based hydrogels with titania nanoparticles

Poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP)-based hydrogels with titania nanoparticles (TN) were synthesized by the sol-gel method for the first time and were characterized in different states (native, freeze-dried, air-dried to constant weight and ground to powder, or swollen to constant weight in H2O or D2O) by various methods such as wide-angle and small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering, neutron spin-echo (NSE) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The static (static polymer-polymer correlation length (mesh size), associates of cross-links and PVP microchains) and dynamic (polymer chain relaxation rate, hydrodynamic polymer-polymer correlation length) structural elements were determined. The incorporation of titania nanoparticles into PVP hydrogel slightly increases the size of structural inhomogeneities (an increase in the static and dynamic polymer-polymer correlation length, the formation of associates of cross-links and PVP chains). Titania nanoparticles have an impact on the microstructure of the composite hydrogel and form associates with sizes from 0.5 to 2 µm attached to PVP hydrogel pore walls. The PVP and TN/PVP hydrogels show a high degree of water swelling. Moreover, the presence of titania nanoparticles in TN/PVP increases the number of water adsorption cycles compared to PVP hydrogel. The high swelling degree, bacteria-resistant and antimicrobial properties against Staphylococcus aureus allow considering NT/PVP hydrogels for medical applications as wound coatings.

A microscopic view of graphene-oxide/poly(acrylic acid) physical hydrogels: effects of polymer charge and graphene oxide loading

In this work we have examined in detail by means of fully atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, physical hydrogels formed by a polymer electrolyte, poly(acrylic acid), and graphene oxide, at two different charging states of the polymer and two different graphene oxide concentrations. It was found that variations of these parameters incurred drastic changes in general morphological characteristics of the composite materials, the degree of physical adsorption of polyelectrolyte chains onto the graphene oxide surface, the polymer dynamic response at local and global length scales, in the charge distributions around the components, and in the mobility of the counterions. All these microscopic features are expected to significantly affect macroscopic physical properties of the hydrogels, such as their mechanical responses and their electrical behaviors.

A family of mechanically adaptive supramolecular graphene oxide/poly(ethylenimine) hydrogels from aqueous assembly

Composite hydrogels containing graphene oxide (GO) offer advantageous mechanical properties, but tuning these properties generally requires the synthesis of new hydrogels or if the hydrogel is thermally responsive, utilization of a chemistry determined temperature window. Here, we demonstrate a simple route to generate a family of GO-based hydrogels from aqueous solution based assembly of GO with polycationic poly(ethylenimine), PEI, without any secondary chemical crosslinking. Tuning the ratio of GO : PEI during the assembly produces a family of hydrogels that responds to mechanical compression by irreversibly altering their equilibrium water content and mechanical properties in a controllable manner. Despite the lack of chemical crosslinks, the hydrogels are stable when stored in an excess of water or NaCl solutions (up to 1 M) and exhibit a tunable swelling ratio (mass hydrogel : mass solid) between 44 and 162 based on both composition and compression history. Consequently, the storage modulus from shear rheology can be increased by more than 3 orders of magnitude from this irreversible mechanical compression of the hydrogel. This stiffening of the hydrogels in response to mechanical stimuli enables the prior compression loading of the hydrogel to be determined. We demonstrate that this strategy is generalizable to other anionic 2D materials such as clay (cloisite). This family of mechanically adaptive hydrogels enables facile fabrication and tuning of physical properties that could be advantageous for sensing, energy dissipation, and other applications.
