The role of sulfur oxidation in controlling the electronic properties of sulfur-containing host molecules for phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes

The role of excited-state character, structural relaxation, and symmetry breaking in enabling delayed fluorescence activity in push-pull chromophores

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is a current promising route for generating highly efficient light-emitting devices. However, the design process of new chromophores is hampered by the complicated underlying photophysics. In this work, four closely related donor-π-acceptor-π-donor systems are investigated, two of which were synthesised previously, with the aim of elucidating their varying effectiveness for TADF. We outline that the frontier orbitals are insufficient for discriminating between the molecules. Subsequently, a detailed analysis of the excited states at a correlated ab initio level highlights the presence of a number of closely spaced singlet and triplet states of varying character. Results from five density functionals are compared against this reference revealing dramatic changes in, both, excited state energies and wavefunctions following variations in the amount of Hartree-Fock exchange included. Excited-state minima are optimised in solution showing the crucial role of structural variations and symmetry breaking for producing a strongly emissive S₁ state. The adiabatic singlet-triplet gaps thus obtained depend strongly on the range separation parameter used in the hybrid density functional calculations. More generally, this work highlights intricate differences present between singlet and triplet excited state wavefunctions and the challenges in describing them accurately.

A theoretical design of bipolar host materials for blue phosphorescent OLED

A series of host molecules have been designed and characterized for use in phosphorescent organic light-emitting diode devices. The parent host molecule was modified by adding nitrogen-containing group at different positions. The first triplet excited (T₁) and first singlet excited (S₁) states energies, frontier orbital energy levels, reorganization energies and injection barriers of the molecules designed were calculated in comparison to those of the reference host, emitter, hole and electron transport materials. Interestingly, our results suggest that addition of nitrogen group into the dibenzothiophene by a N-C linkage increases the triplet energy separation and decreases the injection barriers making them suitable for use as blue phosphorescent materials.

Controlling ultralong room temperature phosphorescence in organic compounds with sulfur oxidation state

Sulfur oxidation state is used to tune organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of symmetric sulfur-bridged carbazole dimers. The sulfide-bridged compound exhibits a factor of 3 enhancement of the phosphorescence efficiency, compared to the sulfoxide and sulfone-bridged analogs, despite sulfone bridges being commonly used in RTP materials. In order to investigate the origin of this enhancement, temperature dependent spectroscopy measurements and theoretical calculations are used. The RTP lifetimes are similar due to similar crystal packing modes. Computational studies reveal that the lone pairs on the sulfur atom have a profound impact on enhancing intersystem crossing rate through orbital mixing and screening, which we hypothesize is the dominant factor responsible for increasing the phosphorescence efficiency. The ability to tune the electronic state without altering crystal packing modes allows the isolation of these effects. This work provides a new perspective on the design principles of organic phosphorescent materials, going beyond the rules established for conjugated ketone/sulfone-based organic molecules.

Oxidation State-Dependent Electronic Properties of Sulfur-Containing Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Molecules

Comparative studies of a series of sulfur-containing thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules and their oxidized compounds are carried out by means of electronic structure calculations. Aiming at investigating the effects of oxidation of bridged sulfur on the modulation of electronic structures of sulfur-containing TADF molecules, their geometrical structures, singlet (S₁) and triple (T₁) energies and their gap (ΔE_ST), the transition dipole moment, the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) between S₁ and T₁ states, the ionization potentials, and electron affinities are analyzed in detail to determine the structure-property relationships in these investigated TADF molecules and their corresponding oxidized counterparts. The electronic structure calculations show that the oxidation of bridged sulfur into the corresponding sulfoxide and sulfone significantly changes the electronic properties of TADF molecules. Interestingly, a substantial reduction in the singlet-triplet energy difference is possible with an increase in the oxidation state of the sulfur atom in the core. Moreover, the sulfone-containing molecules exhibit both S₁ and T₁ states having a large charge transfer (CT) excitation characteristic, which helps reduce the singlet-triplet energy gap and facilitates the reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) from the triplet state to the singlet state. SOC values increase with an increase in the oxidation state of the sulfur atom. Particularly, a sulfoxide-containing core moiety exhibits higher SOC values when compared with the sulfone-containing acceptor core.
