Porous Fiber Processing and Manufacturing for Energy Storage Applications

The objective of this article is to provide an overview on the current development of micro- and nanoporous fiber processing and manufacturing technologies. Various methods for making micro- and nanoporous fibers including co-electrospinning, melt spinning, dry jet-wet quenching spinning, vapor deposition, template assisted deposition, electrochemical oxidization, and hydrothermal oxidization are presented. Comparison is made in terms of advantages and disadvantages of different routes for porous fiber processing. Characterization of the pore size, porosity, and specific area is introduced as well. Applications of porous fibers in various fields are discussed. The emphasis is put on their uses for energy storage components and devices including rechargeable batteries and supercapacitors.

Nanoporous gold functionalized with praseodymia-titania mixed oxides as a stable catalyst for the water-gas shift reaction

Dealloyed nanoporous metals hold great promise in the field of heterogeneous catalysis; however their tendency to coarsen at elevated temperatures or under catalytic reaction conditions sometimes limit further applications. Here, we report on a highly stable nanoporous gold catalyst (npAu) functionalized with praseodymia-titania mixed oxides as synthesized by a sol-gel method. Specifically, we used aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy to study the morphology and the interface between the oxide deposits and the npAu substrate at the atomic level. Based on electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), it is concluded that Pr-TiOx mixed oxides form a solid solution. Flow reactor tests reveal that the Pr-TiOx functionalized nanoporous gold is not only highly active but also very stable for the water gas shift reaction in a large temperature range (180-400 °C). Our results demonstrate the potential of engineering the compositions of oxides coatings on npAu for advanced functional systems.

Hydrogen-induced plasticity in nanoporous palladium

The mechanical strain response of nanoporous palladium (npPd) upon electrochemical hydrogenation using an in situ dilatometric technique is investigated. NpPd with an average ligament diameter of approximately 20 nm is produced via electrochemical dealloying. A hydrogen-induced phase transition from PdH_β to PdH_α is found to enable internal-stress plasticity (or transformation-mismatch plasticity) in nanoporous palladium, which leads to exceptionally high strains without fracture as a result of external forces. The high surface stress in the nanoporous structure in combination with the internal-stress plasticity mechanism leads to a peculiar strain response upon hydrogen sorption and desorption. Critical potentials for the formation of PdH_α and PdH_β in npPd are determined. The theoretical concepts to assess the plastic strain response of nanoporous samples are elucidated, taking into account characteristics of structure and deformation mechanism.
