Modeling cooperative effects in halogen-bonded infinite linear chains

Malonaldehyde-like Systems: BeF2 Clusters—A Subtle Balance between Hydrogen Bonds, Beryllium Bonds, and Resonance

The stability of malonaldehyde is governed by intramolecular hydrogen bonds (IMHBs) as well as in malonaldehyde-like systems where oxygen is replaced by N or S at any of the basic sites. As beryllium bonds have been shown to strongly cooperate with hydrogen bonds, this work explores at the high level ab initio G4 level of theory the effect of including this non-covalent interaction in the system through its association with BeF2. Although malonaldehyde follows the expected trends, where the formation of a pseudocyclic form is favored also when IMHB and Be bonds are present, the subtle balance between both non-covalent interactions leads to some surprising results when other heteroatoms are involved, to the point that interaction energies can be much larger than expected or even cyclization is not favored. A complete analysis using different computational tools gives an answer to those cases escaping the predictable trends.

Understanding the unusual stiffness of hydrophobic dipeptide crystals

The hydrophobic diphenylalanine peptide crystal is known to be unusually stiff, with an experimental Young's modulus in the range of 19-27 GPa. Here it is shown by means of density functional theory calculations that phenylalanine-leucine, leucine-phenylalanine, alanine-valine, valine-alanine and valine-valine hydrophobic dipeptide crystals are also unusually stiff, with Young's moduli in the range of 19.7-33.3 GPa. To further our understanding of the origin of that unusual stiffness, a linear correlation is established between Young's modulus and the strength and orientation of the hydrogen bond network developed along the crystals, showing that stiffness in these materials is primarily dictated by hydrogen bonding.

"Anti-Electrostatic" Halogen Bonding

Halogen bonding is often described as being driven predominantly by electrostatics, and thus adducts between anionic halogen bond (XB) donors (halogen-based Lewis acids) and anions seem counterintuitive. Such "anti-electrostatic" XBs have been predicted theoretically but for organic XB donors, there are currently no experimental examples except for a few cases of self-association. Reported herein is the synthesis of two negatively charged organoiodine derivatives that form anti-electrostatic XBs with anions. Even though the electrostatic potential is universally negative across the surface of both compounds, DFT calculations indicate kinetic stabilization of their halide complexes in the gas phase and particularly in solution. Experimentally, self-association of the anionic XB donors was observed in solid-state structures, resulting in dimers, trimers, and infinite chains. In addition, co-crystals with halides were obtained, representing the first cases of halogen bonding between an organic anionic XB donor and a different anion. The bond lengths of all observed interactions are 14-21 % shorter than the sum of the van der Waals radii.
