Fast Recombination of Charge-Transfer State in Organic Photovoltaic Composite of P3HT and Semiconducting Carbon Nanotubes Is the Reason for Its Poor Photovoltaic Performance

Although the photovoltaic performance of the composite of poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) with semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (s-SWCNT) is promising, the short-circuit current density j_SC is much lower than that for typical polymer/fullerene composites. Out-of-phase electron spin echo (ESE) technique with laser excitation of the P3HT/s-SWCNT composite was used to clarify the origin of the poor photogeneration of free charges. The appearance of out-of-phase ESE signal is a solid proof that the charge-transfer state of P3HT⁺/s-SWCNT^- is formed upon photoexcitation and the electron spins of P3HT⁺ and s-SWCNT^- are correlated. No out-of-phase ESE signal was detected in the same experiment with pristine P3HT film. The out-of-phase ESE envelope modulation trace for P3HT/s-SWCNT composite was close to that for the polymer/fullerene photovoltaic composite PCDTBT/PC₇₀BM, which implies a similar distance of initial charge separation in the range 2-4 nm. However, out-of-phase ESE signal decay with delay after laser flash increase for P3HT/s-SWCNT composite was much faster, with a characteristic time of 10 µs at 30 K. This points to the higher geminate recombination rate for the P3HT/s-SWCNT composite, which may be one of the reasons for the relatively poor photovoltaic performance of this system.

On the magnetic field stability of cryogen-free magnets for magnetic resonance applications

The temporal magnetic field variation associated with Cold Head operation in cryogen-free magnets was studied. Three different mechanisms for such variations were tested separately and rated by their importance. It was found that mechanical displacement of the magnet inside the cryostat is the main issue of magnetic field perturbation. In a cryostat with the Gifford- McMahon type of cryocooler, motion of the displacer with magnetic material inside also produces significant field modulation. The temperature variation of the magnet, although noticeable, leads to smaller field distortions compared to the previous two factors. It was shown that the temporal magnetic field variation could be reduced down to below 20 ​ppb level that could be acceptable for MRI and MAS NMR applications. It was also shown that a single cryogen-free magnet could be easily used at different fields on a day-to-day basis without compromising the field stability unlike magnets housed in a liquid helium reservoir.

Geminate recombination in organic photovoltaic blend PCDTBT/PC71BM studied by out-of-phase electron spin echo spectroscopy

The key process in organic solar cell operation is charge separation under light illumination. Due to the low dielectric constant of organic materials, the Coulomb attraction energy within the interfacial charge-transfer state (CTS) is larger than the thermal energy. Understanding the mechanism of charge separation at the organic donor/acceptor interface still remains a challenge and requires knowledge of the CTS temporal evolution. To address this problem, the CTS in the benchmark photovoltaic blend PCDTBT/PC₇₁BM was studied by the out-of-phase Electron Spin Echo (ESE). The protocol for determining the CTS geminate recombination rate for certain electron-hole distances was developed. Simulating the out-of-phase ESE trace for the CTS in the PCDTBT/PC₇₁BM blend allows precise determination of the electron-hole distance distribution function and its evolution with the increase in the delay after the laser flash. Distances of charge separation up to 6 nm were detected upon thermalization at a temperature of 20 K. Assuming the exponential decay of the recombination rate, the attenuation factor β = 0.08 Å^-1 is estimated for the PCDTBT/PC₇₁BM blend. Such a low attenuation factor is probably caused by a high degree of hole delocalization along the PCDTBT chain.

Magnetoconductance Study on Nongeminate Recombination in Solar Cell Using Poly(3-hexylthiophene) and [6,6]-Phenyl-C61-butyric Acid Methyl Ester

The magnetoconductance (MC) effect was investigated for two types of organic solar cells with single junction (SJ) and bulk junction (BJ) of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as donor (D) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as acceptor (A). Three components with different half-field-at-half-maximums (B 1/2) of 4 ± 1, 20 ± 15 and >400 mT, hereafter referred to MCS,M,B in a sequence, were observed in the magnetic field dependence of the MC effects measured under dark and light conditions. The magnitude of the MCS,M,B components is sensitive to not only the junction structure of the cell but also the presence or absence of incident light. The bias voltage (V) dependence of the MC effect in the dark for the SJ-cell is maximized around the turn-on voltage (V ON) of the dark current, where a flat band condition of the active layer is achieved. The B 1/2 for the MCM component of the SJ-cell increases with V beyond V ON. In light, the BJ-cell exhibits the MC effect, whereas no effect is detected for the SJ-cell. The MCS,M components for the BJ-cell in light increase with the incident light power. The transient MCS,M components for the BJ-cell measured using a nanosecond pulse laser increases with the delay time after the flash. By integrating these phenomena and the phase of the MC effect, it is concluded that all of the MC components arise from the magnetic field effect on the spin conversion of nongeminate electron (e)-hole (h) pairs with spin-dependent charge recombinations at the D/A-interface. The B 1/2 values for MCS,M,B are, respectively, understood by the spin conversion due to the hyperfine interaction, the spin relaxation, and the g-factor difference for e (PCBM-) and h (P3HT+). Kinetic simulations of the MCS,M components for the BJ-cell observed at the short-circuit condition in light yield an efficiency of ca. 40% for the nongeminate recombination, which is accompanied by the generation of triplet excitons as well as relaxation to a ground singlet state. The loss mechanism of moderate triplet recombination suggests an important possibility to improve the power conversion efficiency by harvesting of the triplet excitons.
