XRD- and infrared-probed anisotropic thermal expansion properties of an organic semiconducting single crystal

The borderless world of chemical bonding across the van der Waals crust and the valence region

The definition of the van der Waals crust as the spherical section between the atomic radius and the van der Waals radius of an element is discussed and a survey of the application of the penetration index between two interacting atoms in a wide variety of covalent, polar, coordinative or noncovalent bonding situations is presented. It is shown that this newly defined parameter permits the comparison of bonding between pairs of atoms in structural and computational studies independently of the atom sizes.

Fragmentation and transferability in Hirshfeld atom refinement

Hirshfeld atom refinement (HAR) is one of the most effective methods for obtaining accurate structural parameters for hydrogen atoms from X-ray diffraction data. Unfortunately, it is also relatively computationally expensive, especially for larger molecules due to wavefunction calculations. Here, a fragmentation approach has been tested as a remedy for this problem. It gives an order of magnitude improvement in computation time for larger organic systems and is a few times faster for metal-organic systems at the cost of only minor differences in the calculated structural parameters when compared with the original HAR calculations. Fragmentation was also applied to polymeric and disordered systems where it provides a natural solution to problems that arise when HAR is applied. The concept of fragmentation is closely related to the transferable aspherical atom model (TAAM) and allows insight into possible ways to improve TAAM. Hybrid approaches combining fragmentation with the transfer of atomic densities between chemically similar atoms have been tested. An efficient handling of intermolecular interactions was also introduced for calculations involving fragmentation. When applied in fragHAR (a fragmentation approach for polypeptides) as a replacement for the original approach, it allowed for more efficient calculations. All of the calculations were performed with a locally modified version of Olex2 combined with a development version of discamb2tsc and ORCA. Care was taken to efficiently use the power of multicore processors by simple implementation of load-balancing, which was found to be very important for lowering computational time.

Thermal expansion properties of organic crystals: a CSD study

The thermal expansion properties of crystalline organic compounds are investigated by data mining of the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). The mean volumetric thermal expansion coefficient is 168.8 × 10-6 K-1 and the mean uniaxial thermal expansion coefficient is 71.4 × 10-6 K-1, based on 745 and 1129 different observations, respectively. Normal and anomalous coefficients can be identified using these values and the associated standard deviations. The anisotropy of the thermal expansion is also evaluated and found to have a very broad distribution. 4719 different structures, comprising 4093 different molecular compounds and 626 additional polymorphs have been analyzed on their thermal expansion properties. Approximately 34% of these structures may have at least one orthogonal axis with negative thermal expansion, much more than generally believed. Moreover 127 structures have been identified which could have negative volumetric thermal expansion. Experimental validation using a robust protocol with data collected at more than 2 different temperatures is required to validate these cases.

Field-Effect Transistors Based on 2D Organic Semiconductors Developed by a Hybrid Deposition Method

Solution-processed 2D organic semiconductors (OSCs) have drawn considerable attention because of their novel applications from flexible optoelectronics to biosensors. However, obtaining well-oriented sheets of 2D organic materials with low defect density still poses a challenge. Here, a highly crystallized 2,9-didecyldinaphtho[2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (C10-DNTT) monolayer crystal with large-area uniformity is obtained by an ultraslow shearing (USS) method and its growth pattern shows a kinetic Wulff's construction supported by theoretical calculations of surface energies. The resulting seamless and highly crystalline monolayers are then used as templates for thermally depositing another C10-DNTT ultrathin top-up film. The organic thin films deposited by this hybrid approach show an interesting coherence structure with a copied molecular orientation of the templating crystal. The organic field-effect transistors developed by these hybrid C10-DNTT films exhibit improved carrier mobility of 14.7 cm2 V-1 s-1 as compared with 7.3 cm2 V-1 s-1 achieved by pure thermal evaporation (100% improvement) and 2.8 cm2 V-1 s-1 achieved by solution sheared monolayer C10-DNTT. This work establishes a simple yet effective approach for fabricating high-performance and low-cost electronics on a large scale.

Packing Rearrangements in 4-Hydroxycyanobenzene Under Pressure

4-hydroxycyanobenzene (4HCB) is a dipolar molecule formed of an aromatic substituted benzene ring with the CN and OH functional groups at the 1 and 4 positions. In the crystalline state, it forms spiral chains via hydrogen bonding, which pack together through π−π interactions. The direct stacking of benzene rings down the a- and b-axes and its π−π interactions throughout the structure gives rise to its semiconductor properties. Here, high-pressure studies are conducted on 4HCB in order to investigate how the packing and intermolecular interactions, related to its semiconductor properties, are affected. High-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction was performed with helium and neon as the pressure-transmitting mediums up to 26 and 15 GPa, respectively. The pressure-dependent behaviour of 4HCB in He was dominated by the insertion of He into the structure after 2.4 GPa, giving rise to two phase transitions, and alterations in the π−π interactions above 4 GPa. 4HCB compressed in Ne displayed two phase transitions associated with changes in the orientation of the 4HCB molecules, giving rise to twice as many face-to-face packing of the benzene rings down the b-axis, which could allow for greater charge mobility. In the He loading, the hydrogen bonding interactions steadily decrease without any large deviations, while in the Ne loading, the change in 4HCB orientation causes an increase in the hydrogen bonding interaction distance. Our study highlights how the molecular packing and π−π interactions evolve with pressure as well as with He insertion.

Biocompatibility of Yttria-Tetragonal Zirconia Polycrystal Seeded with Human Adipose Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cell

INTRODUCTION

The scaffold is a place for regeneration of new bone and bone tissue growths in tissue engineering applications. hADMSC is a multipotent cell which can differentiate into osteogenic, chondrogenic and adipogenic. Y-TZP has been shown to have several advantages over other ceramics because of its hard nature, namely fracture toughness and high flexural strength.

AIM

This study aimed to analyze the biocompatibility of Y-TZP as a scaffold seeded with hADMSCs by in vitro analysis.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

This research involved several processes, namely Y-TZPS manufacture process, XRD examination, differentiation and characterization of hADMSC, SEM observation, and then TT.

RESULTS

The results of the XRD examination showed that Y-TZPSs had sharp peaks. It suggests that they had high crystal purity. The marked expression of the characterization of hADMSC is the positive expression of Cluster of differentiation (CD), namely CD 90, CD 73 and CD 105 above NMT and negative expressions of CD 14, CD 19, CD 34, CD 45 and also HLA-DR below NLT. The analysis of observations on the Y-TZPSs with SEM, subsequently, indicated the porosity of Y-TZPSs, as a result, the adhesion of HADMSCs occurred and grew in the porosity in the Y-TZPSs.

CONCLUSIONS

Y-TZPSs with low porosity and toxicity can be able to proliferate and differentiate if seeded with hADMSC. Y-TZPSs are expected to be used as implantable biomaterials using hADMSCs with high biocompatibility.
