A framework for designing main-group single-molecule magnets

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are molecular entities with strongly anisotropic magnetic moment. As a result, SMMs display slow relaxation of magnetization at the macroscopic scale. Up to date all experimentally characterized SMMs are based on either d- or f-block metals with lanthanides proving to be the most successful. In the present work, a framework for constructing SMMs consisting purely of main-group elements will be outlined by computational and theoretical means. The proposed main-group SMMs utilize the strong spin-orbit coupling of a single heavy p-block atom or ion that can lead to strong magnetic anisotropy and pronounced SMM properties. A theoretical crystal-field model is developed to describe the magnetic properties of p-block SMMs with a minimal set of parameters related to the chemical structure of the SMMs. The model is used to establish which p-block elements and oxidation states can lead to SMM behavior. A large number of model structures are studied to establish general features of optimal chemical structures. These include one- and two-coordinate structures involving ligands with different coordination modes and all group 13 to 17 elements in periods 4 to 6. The results show that the most viable structures are based on mono-coordinated complexes of bismuth in oxidation state 0 with σ-donor ligands. Structures with bulkier ligands that sterically protect the bismuth atoms are then proposed as a starting point for the practical realization of main-group SMMs. The calculations show that minimizing the anagostic interactions with the bismuth atom is essential in the ligand design, which along with the low oxidation state of bismuth introduces significant synthetic challenges. The results do, however, show that main-group SMMs are plausible from a practical point of view within a limited set of heavier p-block elements in specific oxidation states. Furthermore, the proposed SMMs display much larger energy barriers for the relaxation of magnetization than even the best lanthanide-based SMMs do. This indicates that it is possible that main-group SMMs can supersede even the best currently known SMMs based on d- or f-block elements.

Experimentally Delineating the Catalytic Effect of a Single Water Molecule in the Photochemical Rearrangement of the Phenylperoxy Radical to the Oxepin-2(5H)-one-5-yl Radical

Catalysis plays a pivotal role in both chemistry and biology, primarily attributed to its ability to stabilize transition states and lower activation free energies, thereby accelerating reaction rates. While computational studies have contributed valuable mechanistic insights, there remains a scarcity of experimental investigations into transition states. In this work, we embark on an experimental exploration of the catalytic energy lowering associated with transition states in the photorearrangement of the phenylperoxy radical-water complex to the oxepin-2(5H)-one-5-yl radical. Employing matrix isolation spectroscopy, density functional theory, and post-HF computations, we scrutinize the (photo)catalytic impact of a single water molecule on the rearrangement. Our computations indicate that the barrier heights for the water-assisted unimolecular isomerization steps are approximately 2-3 kcal mol-1 lower compared to the uncatalyzed steps. This decrease directly coincides with the energy difference in the required wavelength during the transformation (Δλ = λ546 nm - λ579 nm ≡ 52.4-49.4 = 3.0 kcal mol-1), allowing us to elucidate the differential transition state energy in the photochemical rearrangement of the phenylperoxy radical catalyzed by a single water molecule. Our work highlights the important role of water catalysis and has, among others, implications for understanding the mechanism of organic reactions under atmospheric conditions.

Generation and reactivity of vinyltelluryl radical

Vinyltelluryl radical was prepared by high-vacuum flash pyrolysis from the corresponding divinylditelluride and trapped in an argon matrix at 10 K. The title compound was characterized by IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy, and all experimental data match well with density functional theory at the UB3LYP/def2-QZVPP level. According to UB3LYP/def2-QZVPP computations, the spin density is mainly localized on the Te atom. The vinylogy principle for the vinyltelluryl radical is not applicable due to the lack of delocalization of spin density. Upon irradiation of the matrix with light (λ = 365 nm), the vinyltelluryl radical rearranges to a H-Te˙⋯acetylene complex. Doping the matrix with molecular oxygen leads to the hitherto unknown vinyltelluro peroxy radical. The latter isomerizes to the more thermodynamically stable vinyltelluroyl radical by irradiation with light at λ = 523 nm.

Spectroscopic identification of the phenyltelluryl radical and its reactivity toward molecular oxygen

The phenyltelluryl radical was prepared by high-vacuum flash pyrolysis of diphenyl ditelluride and was chacracterized by matrix isolation IR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. After doping the matrix with molecular oxygen and allowing bimolecular reactions, the hitherto unkown phenyltelluro peroxy radical formed and was identified via IR spectroscopy. Irradiation with light at λ = 436 nm leads to isomerization to the thermodynamically more stable novel phenyltelluroyl radical. All experimental findings agree well with density functional theory (UB3LYP/Def2QZVPP and UM06-2X/Def2QZVPP) computations.

Preparation and spectroscopic identification of methyl-Se-nitrososelenol

Herein, we report, for the first time, the preparation, matrix-isolation, and spectroscopic characterization of the methyl selenyl radical and methyl-Se-nitrososelenol in combination with DFT and CASSCF/NEVPT2 computations. The latter proved to be highly photolabile, and upon irradiation with light at λ = 465 nm it leads to methyl selenyl and nitric oxide radical pairs. Upon λ > 730 nm irradiation it rearranges back to methyl-Se-nitrososelenol.
