A computational tool to accurately and quickly predict 19F NMR chemical shifts of molecules with fluorine-carbon and fluorine-boron bonds. Phys Chem Chem Phys 2022; 24:20409-20425. Abstract
We report the evaluation of density-functional-theory (DFT) based procedures for predicting 19F NMR chemical shifts at modest computational cost for a range of molecules with fluorine bonds, to be used as a tool for assisting the characterisation of reaction intermediates and products and as an aid to identifying mechanistic pathways. The results for a balanced learning set of molecules were then checked using two further testing sets, resulting in the recommendation of the ωB97XD/aug-cc-pvdz DFT method and basis set as having the best combination of accuracy and computational time, with a RMS error of 3.57 ppm. Cationic molecules calculated without counter-anion showed normal errors, whilst anionic molecules showed somewhat larger errors. The method was applied to the prediction of the conformationally averaged 19F chemical shifts of 2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5-octafluoropentan-1-ol, in which gauche stereoelectronic effects involving fluorine dominate and to determining the position of coordination equilibria of fluorinated boranes as an aid to verifying the relative energies of intermediate species involved in catalytic amidation reactions involving boron catalysts.

Structural Requirements for Chemoselective Ammonolysis of Ethylene Glycol to Ethanolamine over Supported Cobalt Catalysts. Catalysts 2021. Abstract
Ethylene glycol is regarded as a promising C2 platform molecule due to the fast development of its production from sustainable biomass. This study inquired the structural requirements of Co-based catalysts for the liquid-phase ammonolysis of ethylene glycol to value-added ethanolamine. We showed that the rate and selectivity of ethylene glycol ammonolysis on γ-Al2O3-supported Co catalysts were strongly affected by the metal particle size within the range of 2–10 nm, among which Co nanoparticles of ~4 nm exhibited both the highest ethanolamine selectivity and the highest ammonolysis rate based on the total Co content. Doping of a moderate amount of Ag further promoted the catalytic activity without affecting the selectivity. Combined kinetic and infrared spectroscopic assessments unveiled that the addition of Ag significantly destabilized the adsorbed NH3 on the Co surface, which would otherwise be strongly bound to the active sites and inhibit the rate-determining dehydrogenation step of ethylene glycol.

Abstract
Cobalt based catalysts having enhanced H2 dissociation and desorption were synthesized by inserting a trace amount of palladium. These catalysts were used for the reductive amination of polypropylene glycol (PPG) to polyetheramine (PEA). The catalytic activity toward PEA was significantly increased by incorporating an extremely low content of palladium (around 0.01 wt%) into cobalt based catalysts. The Pd inserted cobalt catalysts promoted reduction of cobalt oxide to cobalt metal and inhibited formation of cobalt nitride in the reductive amination. The Pd inserted cobalt catalysts not only enhanced hydrogen dissociation but also accelerated hydrogen desorption by increasing the electron density of cobalt through interaction between cobalt and palladium. These play a critical role in reducing cobalt oxide or cobalt nitride to cobalt metal as an active site for the reductive amination. Thus, the Pd inserted cobalt catalysts provide improved catalytic performance toward PEA production by maintaining the cobalt metal state. Addition of Pd into Co helped remarkably to reduce cobalt oxide and nitride to cobalt metal by enhanced hydrogen dissociation and desorption.![]()
