Catalyst-Free Synthesis of Thiosulfonates and 3-Sulfenylindoles from Sodium Sulfinates in Water

This paper presents a green and efficient aqueous-phase method for the synthesis of thiosulfonates, which has the benefits of no need for catalysts or redox reagents and a short reaction time, providing a method with great economic value for synthesizing thiosulfonates. Furthermore, 3-Sulfenylindoles can be easily synthesized using this method, which expands the potential applications of this reaction.

Ph3P-mediated decarboxylative ring-opening of maleic anhydride by thiolic compounds: formation of two carbon-sulfur bonds

In this study, a simple and efficient method for the formation of carbon-sulfur bonds is described. In this process, ring opening of maleic anhydride by thiols or disulfides and triphenylphosphine led to the formation of sulfide products via formation of two carbon-sulfur bonds.

Review of the Syntheses and Activities of Some Sulfur-Containing Drugs

Background:

Sulfur-containing compounds represent an important class of chemical compounds due to their wide range of biological and pharmaceutical properties. Moreover, sulfur-containing compounds may be applied in other fields, such as biological, organic, and materials chemistry. Several studies on the activities of sulfur compounds have already proven their anti-inflammatory properties and use to treat diseases, such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and HIV. Moreover, examples of sulfur-containing compounds include dapsone, quetiapine, penicillin, probucol, and nelfinavir, which are important drugs with known activities.

Objective:

This review will focus on the synthesis and application of some sulfur-containing compounds used to treat several diseases, as well as promising new drug candidates.

Results:

Due to the variety of compounds containing C-S bonds, we have reviewed the different synthetic routes used toward the synthesis of sulfur-containing drugs and other compounds.

Synthesis of a new series of Ni(ii), Cu(ii), Co(ii) and Pd(ii) complexes with an ONS donor Schiff base: crystal structure, DFT study and catalytic investigation of palladium and nickel complexes towards deacylative sulfenylation of active methylenes and regioselective 3-sulfenylation of indoles via thiouronium salt formation

A series of Ni(ii), Cu(ii), Co(ii), and Pd(ii) complexes have been synthesized with a chelating Schiff base ligand coordinated to a metal center with ONS donor atoms. The ligand and complexes are characterized by elemental analysis and spectroscopic techniques like FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and UV-Visible spectroscopy. The single crystal structure of the Pd(ii) complex is obtained by X-ray diffraction analysis and exhibits slightly distorted square planar geometry. The structure is optimized by DFT, TD-DFT calculation to elaborate the electronic structure and NBO for the charge distribution analysis of the Pd(ii) complex. The synthesized Pd(ii) and Ni(ii) complexes as catalysts have been investigated in the C-S cross-coupling of indoles and active methylenes. The metal propelled regioselective transformation afforded 3-sulfenylated indoles while β-diketones favored deacylated monosulfenyl ketones in an excellent yield via thiouronium salt formation. The Pd(ii) complex displays slightly better reactivity whereas the Ni(ii) complex is cost-efficient. The method is fast, easy to handle and cost effective in terms of high reactivity of catalysts, use of non-toxic solvents, and cheaper aryl halides and thiourea replace conventional sulfur sources, providing a practical access to organic transformations.
