Unusual photo-tunable mechanical transformation of azobenzene terminated aliphatic polycarbonate

Human substance needsśś have been enriched by the development of smart-responsive materials possessing unique responsiveness and mechanical variability. However, acquiring these features in photoresponsive energy-driven elastomers is challengeable but highly desirable. Here, we report fabrication of physically-crosslinked elastomers based on an aliphatic polycarbonate terminated with one azobenzene derivative as the end group. Upon irradiation of UV light, the aliphatic polycarbonate shows unusual mechanical transformation from trans-azobenzene-rich elasticity to cis-azobenzene-rich plasticity, which is contrary to the photo-triggered mechanics of other azopolymers. This indicates that stronger interaction may be established between the terminated cis-azobenzenes and the benzene rings in the side chain of polymer, leading to a higher crosslinking density appeared in the cis-azobenzene-rich sample. This azobenzene-terminated polymer is an energy-driven elastomer, which has photo-switchable supramolecular interactions, showing photo-tunable mechanical properties (the half-life period of the cis-azobenzene is 16.9 h). More interestingly, the photoinduced mechanical change occurs at room temperature, enabling the aliphatic polycarbonate to behave as non-thermally switchable ultra-strong adhesive for different substrates, which is specifically suitable for smart dressings to promote wound healing. This switchable mechanical feature of elastomers may be a reference for smart elastomers towards advanced applications.

Mechanically mutable polymer enabled by light

Human skin is a remarkable example of a biological material that displays unique mechanical characters of both soft elasticity and stretchability. However, mimicking these features has been absent in photoresponsive soft matters. Here, we present one synthetic ABA-type triblock copolymer consisting of polystyrene as end blocks and one photoresponsive azopolymer as the middle block, which is stiffness at room temperature and shows a phototunable transition to soft elastics athermally. We have synthesized an elastics we term "photoinduced soft elastomer," where the photo-evocable soft midblock of azopolymer and the glassy polystyrene domains act as elastic matrix and physical cross-linking junctions, respectively. On the basis of the photoswitchable transformation between stiffness and elasticity at room temperature, we demonstrated precise control over nanopatterns on nonplanar substrates especially adaptable in the human skin and fabrication of packaged perovskite solar cells, enabling the simple, human-friendly, and controllable approach to be promising for mechanically adaptable soft photonic and electronic packaging applications.

Alignment Layer of Liquid Crystal Using Plant-Based Isoeugenol-Substituted Polystyrene

We synthesized a series of renewable and plant-based isoeugenol-substituted polystyrenes (PIEU#, # = 100, 80, 60, 40, and 20, where # is the molar percent content of isoeugenol moiety), using polymer modification reactions to study their liquid crystal (LC) alignment behavior. In general, the LC cells fabricated using polymer film with a higher molar content of isoeugenol side groups showed vertical LC alignment behavior. This alignment behavior was well related to the surface energy value of the polymer layer. For example, vertical alignments were observed when the polar surface energy value of the polymer was smaller than approximately 3.59 mJ/m2, generated by the nonpolar isoeugenol moiety with long and bulky carbon groups. Good alignment stability at 100 °C and under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation of 15 J/cm2 was observed for the LC cells fabricated using PIEU100 as a LC alignment layer. Therefore, renewable isoeugenol-based materials can be used to produce an eco-friendly vertical LC alignment system.
