Organic Electronics-Microfluidics/Lab on a Chip Integration in Analytical Applications

Organic electronics (OE) technology has matured in displays and is advancing in solid-state lighting applications. Other promising and growing uses of this technology are in (bio)chemical sensing, imaging, in vitro cell monitoring, and other biomedical diagnostics that can benefit from low-cost, efficient small devices, including wearable designs that can be fabricated on glass or flexible plastic. OE devices such as organic LEDs, organic and hybrid perovskite-based photodetectors, and organic thin-film transistors, notably organic electrochemical transistors, are utilized in such sensing and (bio)medical applications. The integration of compact and sensitive OE devices with microfluidic channels and lab-on-a-chip (LOC) structures is very promising. This survey focuses on studies that utilize this integration for a variety of OE tools. It is not intended to encompass all studies in the area, but to present examples of the advances and the potential of such OE technology, with a focus on microfluidics/LOC integration for efficient wide-ranging sensing and biomedical applications.

Organic Light-Emitting Diode Based Fluorescence-Linked Immunosorbent Assay for SARS-CoV-2 Antibody Detection

Immunodiagnostics have been widely used in the detection of disease biomarkers. The conventional immunological tests in central laboratories require expensive equipment and, for non-specialists, the tests are technically demanding and time-consuming, which has prevented their use by the public. Thus, point-of-care tests (POCT), such as lateral flow immunoassays, are being, or have been, developed as more convenient and low-cost methods for immunodiagnostics. However, the sensitivity of such tests is often a concern. Here, a fluorescence-linked immunosorbent assay (FLISA) using organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) as excitation light sources was investigated as a way forward for the development of compact and sensitive POCTs. Phycoerythrin (PE) was selected as the fluorescent dye, and OLEDs were designed with different emission spectra. The leakage light of different OLEDs for exciting PE was then investigated to reduce the background noise and improve the sensitivity of the system. Finally, as proof-of-principle that OLED-based technology can be successfully further developed for POCT, antibodies to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in human serum was detected by OLED-FLISA.

Development of lab-on-chip biosensor for the detection of toxic heavy metals: A review

Recently, a decrease in water availability and quality has been raised due to rapid industrialization, unsustainable agricultural activities and anthropogenic activities. Heavy metals are considered significant pollutants in the water environment, cause environmental hazards and health effects to humans. For monitoring water contaminants utilized different conventional techniques. Still, they have some drawbacks, such as cost expensive, ecological issues, and processing time, requiring technicians and researchers to operate them effectively. Biosensors have become reasonable devices for screening and identifying environmental contaminants because of their different benefits contrasted with other detecting techniques. This review summarizes the toxic effect of heavy metal and their source, occurrence. A detailed discussion is provided on the heavy metal recognition materials for detecting heavy metals in wastewater. Lab on chip (LOC) is an emerging micro-electrical mechanical system (MEMS) device that intakes liquid and makes it move through the micro-channels, to accomplish fast, cost-effective and profoundly sensitive analysis with significant yield. LOC also provided a discussion on numerous laboratory functions on a single platform. This article attempts to discuss the detection of heavy metals using lab on a chip by suitable recognition materials. Further, the design and fabrication mechanism and their recognition abilities of LOC were also reviewed. The review mainly focuses on the application of LOC biosensors, pros, and cons, and suggests a roadmap towards future development to enhance the practical use in pollutant monitoring.

Organically tuned white-light emission from two zero-dimensional Cd-based hybrids

In this work, we report two zero-dimensional Cd-based hybrid compounds, denoted CdACP and CdODA, where the Cd atoms adopt tetrahedral geometry. The optical analysis reveals that these materials are classified as wide-gap semi-conductors which makes them suitable for optoelectronic applications. The photoluminescence analysis proves the wavelength dependent white-light emission behavior of the investigated materials. The structural-optical property studies show that, thanks to the heavy halide effect, the CdACP exhibits both fluorescence and room temperature phosphorescence through harvesting triplet states. Meanwhile, in contrast to CdACP, the white light emission from CdODA is purely fluorescence in nature. In fact, within CdODA, both C-H⋯π and N-H⋯N interactions facilitate the intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) between the different cations which leads to ultra-fast fluorescence through excited state ESIPT. Under sub-gap excitations, the inorganic sub-lattice is responsible for the blue-green emission through the STE mechanism, while the organic cations contribute by an intense red emission.

Recent advancements in microfluidic chip biosensor detection of foodborne pathogenic bacteria: a review

Foodborne diseases caused by pathogenic bacteria pose a serious threat to human health. Early and rapid detection of foodborne pathogens is an urgent task for preventing disease outbreaks. Microfluidic devices are simple, automatic, and portable miniaturized systems. Compared with traditional techniques, microfluidic devices have attracted much attention because of their high efficiency and convenience in the concentration and detection of foodborne pathogens. This article firstly reviews the bio-recognition elements integrated on microfluidic chips in recent years and the progress of microfluidic chip development for pathogen pretreatment. Furthermore, the research progress of microfluidic technology based on optical and electrochemical sensors for the detection of foodborne pathogenic bacteria is summarized and discussed. Finally, the future prospects for the application and challenges of microfluidic chips based on biosensors are presented.

Towards Highly Efficient Polymer Fiber Laser Sources for Integrated Photonic Sensors

Lab-on-a-Chip (LoC) devices combining microfluidic analyte provision with integrated optical analysis are highly desirable for several applications in biological or medical sciences. While the microfluidic approach is already broadly addressed, some work needs to be done regarding the integrated optics, especially provision of highly integrable laser sources. Polymer optical fiber (POF) lasers represent an alignment-free, rugged, and flexible technology platform. Additionally, POFs are intrinsically compatible to polymer microfluidic devices. Home-made Rhodamine B (RB)-doped POFs were characterized with experimental and numerical parameter studies on their lasing potential. High output energies of 1.65 mJ, high slope efficiencies of 56%, and 50%-lifetimes of ≥900 k shots were extracted from RB:POFs. Furthermore, RB:POFs show broad spectral tunability over several tens of nanometers. A route to optimize polymer fiber lasers is revealed, providing functionality for a broad range of LoC devices. Spectral tunability, high efficiencies, and output energies enable a broad field of LoC applications.

Functional Polymers Structures for (Bio)Sensing Application-A Review

In this review we present polymeric materials for (bio)sensor technology development. We focused on conductive polymers (conjugated microporous polymer, polymer gels), composites, molecularly imprinted polymers and their influence on the design and fabrication of bio(sensors), which in the future could act as lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices. LOC instruments enable us to perform a wide range of analysis away from the stationary laboratory. Characterized polymeric species represent promising candidates in biosensor or sensor technology for LOC development, not only for manufacturing these devices, but also as a surface for biologically active materials' immobilization. The presence of biological compounds can improve the sensitivity and selectivity of analytical tools, which in the case of medical diagnostics is extremely important. The described materials are biocompatible, cost-effective, flexible and are an excellent platform for the anchoring of specific compounds.

Nanostructured Organic/Hybrid Materials and Components in Miniaturized Optical and Chemical Sensors

In the last decade, biochemical sensors have brought a disruptive breakthrough in analytical chemistry and microbiology due the advent of technologically advanced systems conceived to respond to specific applications. From the design of a multitude of different detection modalities, several classes of sensor have been developed over the years. However, to date they have been hardly used in point-of-care or in-field applications, where cost and portability are of primary concern. In the present review we report on the use of nanostructured organic and hybrid compounds in optoelectronic, electrochemical and plasmonic components as constituting elements of miniaturized and easy-to-integrate biochemical sensors. We show how the targeted design, synthesis and nanostructuring of organic and hybrid materials have enabled enormous progress not only in terms of modulation and optimization of the sensor capabilities and performance when used as active materials, but also in the architecture of the detection schemes when used as structural/packing components. With a particular focus on optoelectronic, chemical and plasmonic components for sensing, we highlight that the new concept of having highly-integrated architectures through a system-engineering approach may enable the full expression of the potential of the sensing systems in real-setting applications in terms of fast-response, high sensitivity and multiplexity at low-cost and ease of portability.

Narrowband Organic Light-Emitting Diodes for Fluorescence Microscopy and Calcium Imaging

Fluorescence imaging is an indispensable tool in biology, with applications ranging from single-cell to whole-animal studies and with live mapping of neuronal activity currently receiving particular attention. To enable fluorescence imaging at cellular scale in freely moving animals, miniaturized microscopes and lensless imagers are developed that can be implanted in a minimally invasive fashion; but the rigidity, size, and potential toxicity of the involved light sources remain a challenge. Here, narrowband organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are developed and used for fluorescence imaging of live cells and for mapping of neuronal activity in Drosophila melanogaster via genetically encoded Ca²⁺ indicators. In order to avoid spectral overlap with fluorescence from the sample, distributed Bragg reflectors are integrated onto the OLEDs to block their long-wavelength emission tail, which enables an image contrast comparable to conventional, much bulkier mercury light sources. As OLEDs can be fabricated on mechanically flexible substrates and structured into arrays of cell-sized pixels, this work opens a new pathway for the development of implantable light sources that enable functional imaging and sensing in freely moving animals.

A fluorimetric nitrite biosensor with polythienothiophene-fullerene thin film detectors for on-site water monitoring

A novel fluorimetric sensor for highly sensitive nitrite detection on the site is presented in this study. The proposed on-chip approach comprises the use of integrated polymer photodetectors to detect light from fluorescence reactions with a diaminofluorescein probe. The detectors were prepared with a heterostructured nanofilm of polythieno[3,4-b]thiophene/benzodithiophene and (6,6)-phenyl-C₇₁-butyric-acid methyl-ester as a photoactive layer. Prior to fluorimetric detection, the quality of the spin-coated photoactive layer was characterized via nano-morphology and current-density measurements. Nitrite assays were conducted on a poly(methyl methacrylate) microchannel chip, to which polythienothiophene-C₇₁ based detectors were aligned. Results of signal-to-noise ratio determination have indicated a detection limit below 0.55 μM, lower than the 0.1 mg L^-1 maximum limit of operation in recirculating aquaculture systems for farming Atlantic salmon Salmo salar. An increase of the nitrite concentration to toxic levels may therefore be possible to detect. The fluorimetric sensor exhibited good linearity over three orders of magnitude and acceptable detection reproducibility, which confirmed its analytical value. Further tests revealed great promise of the integrated biosensor device for detecting nitrite in aquaculture-relevant samples with high precision. The approach reported hereby may provide impetus to in situ analytical tools for monitoring water quality at aquaculture facilities, the food industries or water monitoring stations.

The Weak Microcavity as an Enabler for Bright and Fault-tolerant Light-emitting Electrochemical Cells

The light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC) is functional at substantial active-layer thickness, and is as such heralded for being fit for low-cost and fault-tolerant solution-based fabrication. We report here that this statement should be moderated, and that in order to obtain a strong luminous output, it is fundamentally important to fabricate LEC devices with a designed thickness of the active layer. By systematic experimentation and simulation, we demonstrate that weak optical microcavity effects are prominent in a common LEC system, and that the luminance and efficiency, as well as the emission color and the angular intensity, vary in a periodic manner with the active-layer thickness. Importantly, we demonstrate that high-performance light-emission can be attained from LEC devices with a significant active-layer thickness of 300 nm, which implies that low-cost solution-processed LECs are indeed a realistic option, provided that the device structure has been appropriately designed from an optical perspective.
