Abstract
Metal migration strategy can offer BH functionalization of o-carboranes at different positions from where initial bond activation occurs to achieve bifunctionalized o-carboranes in one reaction. We report in this article an enantioselective 3,4-bifunctionalization of o-carboranes via asymmetric Pd migration with a high efficiency and up to 98 % ee. This asymmetric catalysis has a broad substrates scope, leading to the preparation of a class of chiral-at-cage o-carborane derivatives. The enantiocontrol model is suggested on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) results, where the chiral Trost ligand plays a crucial role in this enantioselective Pd migration from exo-alkenyl sp2 C to the cage B(4) position of o-carborane.

Abstract
Gas-phase reactions of [OsBx]+ (x = 1-4) with methane at ambient temperature have been studied by using quadrupole-ion trap mass spectrometry combined with quantum chemical calculations. The [OsBx]+ (x = 1-4) cluster ions can undergo dehydrogenation reactions with methane. Comprehensive analysis of the [OsBx]+/CH4 (x = 1-4) system with Os-complexes ([OsCy]+ (y = 1-3) and [OsOz]+ (z = 1-3)) shows that the large polarity of the cluster and the high sum of the pair energies between Os and the ligand in the ETS-NOCV combine to promote the ability of the cluster to activate methane. Cluster polarity may induce heterolytic cleavage of the C-H bond, and the sum of the pair energies of the fragments may reduce the cluster orbital energy to match the methane orbital and improve the cluster stability. The synergistic interplay of these two factors may offer a viable approach for the activation of methane in the condensed phase, which involves modulating the coordination environment of the active sites to enhance the stability and facilitate C-H bond cleavage and the degree of matching with methane orbitals. A nonlinear function is used to extract second-order characteristic features that have a significant impact on the energy difference based on the limited energy difference data of the OsBmCnOlHk units. A neural network model is next designed to predict the reaction barrier for methane conversion by OsM4+ (M = C, N, O, Al, Si, or P) with high accuracy.

Abstract
Achieving electronic/steric control and realizing selectivity regulation in nanocatalysis remains a formidable challenge, as the dynamic nature of metal-ligand interfaces, including dissolution (metal leaching) and structural reconstruction, poses significant obstacles. Herein, we disclose carboranyls (CBs) as unprecedented carbon-bonded functional ligands (Eads.CB-Au(111)=-2.90 eV) for gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), showcasing their exceptional stabilization capability that is attributed by strong Au-C bonds combined with B-H⋅⋅⋅Au interactions. The synthesized CB@AuNPs exhibit core(Aun)-satellite(CB2Au-) structure, showing high stability towards multiple stimuli (110 °C, pH=1-12, thiol etchants). In addition, different from conventional AuNP catalysts such as triphenylphosphine (PPh3) stabilized AuNPs, dissolution of catalytically active gold species was suppressed in CB@AuNPs under the reaction conditions. Leveraging these distinct features, CB@AuNPs realized outstanding p : o selectivities in aromatic bromination. Unbiased arenes including chlorobenzene (up to >30 : 1), bromobenzene (15 : 1) and phenyl acrylate were examined using CB@AuNPs as catalysts to afford highly-selective p-products. Both carboranyl ligands and carboranyl derived counterions are crucial for such regioselective transformation. This work has provided valuable insights for AuNPs in realizing diverse regioselective transformations.

Abstract
Exploration of new organometallic systems based on polyhedral boron clusters has the potential to solve challenging chemical problems such as the stabilization of reactive intermediates and transition-state-like species postulated for E-H (E = H, B, C, Si) bond activation reactions. We report on facile and clean B-H activation of a hydroborane by a new iridium boron cluster complex. The product of this reaction is an unprecedented and fully characterized transition metal-stabilized boron cation or borenium. Moreover, this intermediate bears an unusual intramolecular B···H interaction between the hydrogen originating from the activated hydroborane and the cyclometallated metal-bonded boron atom of the boron cluster. This B···H interaction is proposed to be an arrested insertion of hydrogen into the Bcage-metal bond and the initiation step for iridium "cage-walking" around the upper surface of the boron cluster. The "cage-walking" process is supported by the hydrogen-deuterium exchange observed at the boron cluster, and a mechanism is proposed on the basis of theoretical methods with a special focus on the role of noncovalent interactions. All new compounds were isolated and fully characterized by NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Key compounds were studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract
Carborynes (1,2-dehydro-o-carborane and 1,3-dehydro-o-carborane), three-dimensional analogues of benzyne, can be generated in situ from the precursors 1-X-2-Li-1,2-C2B10H10 (X = Br, I, OTs, OTf), or 1-Me3Si-2-[IPh(OAc)]-1,2-C2B10H10 or [1-Li-3-N2-1,2-C2B10H10][BF4]. They are a class of very useful synthons for the synthesis of a large variety of functionalized carborane derivatives for potential application in medicine, materials science and organometallic/coordination chemistry. The experimental data demonstrate that there is a correspondence between the reactions of carborynes and those of benzyne with alkenes, dienes, alkynes, aromatics or heteroaromatics in a pericyclic reaction fashion. On the other hand, carborynes have unique properties of their own owing to their steric/electronic features. They undergo regioselective sp2/sp3 C-H bond and N-Li bond insertion reactions, which has not been observed for benzyne. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in this interesting research field with considerable attention devoted to the reaction modes and the mechanisms involved.

Abstract
In 2007 two of us defined the σ-Complex Assisted Metathesis mechanism (Perutz and Sabo-Etienne, Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2007, 46, 2578-2592), that is, the σ-CAM concept. This new approach to reaction mechanisms brought together metathesis reactions involving the formation of a variety of metal-element bonds through partner-interchange of σ-bond complexes. The key concept that defines a σ-CAM process is a single transition state for metathesis that is connected by two intermediates that are σ-bond complexes while the oxidation state of the metal remains constant in precursor, intermediates and product. This mechanism is appropriate in situations where σ-bond complexes have been isolated or computed as well-defined minima. Unlike several other mechanisms, it does not define the nature of the transition state. In this review, we highlight advances in the characterization and dynamic rearrangements of σ-bond complexes, most notably alkane and zincane complexes, but also different geometries of silane and borane complexes. We set out a selection of catalytic and stoichiometric examples of the σ-CAM mechanism that are supported by strong experimental and/or computational evidence. We then draw on these examples to demonstrate that the scope of the σ-CAM mechanism has expanded to classes of reaction not envisaged in 2007 (additional σ-bond ligands, agostic complexes, sp2 -carbon, surfaces). Finally, we provide a critical comparison to alternative mechanisms for metathesis of metal-element bonds.

Abstract
The synthesis of well-defined heterometallic complexes remains a frontier challenge in inorganic chemistry. We report an approach that relies on the sequential insertion of electrophilic metal fragments into electron-rich Ru-B bonds of the η2-BB-carboryne complex (POBBOP)Ru(CO)2 [POBBOP = 1,7-OP(iPr)2-m-2,6-dehydrocarborane]. Utilizing this synthetic strategy, bimetallic (POBBOP)(Ru)(CO)2[Pd(PtBu3)] and trimetallic (POBBOP)(Ru)(CO)2[Pd(PtBu3)](CuBr) complexes were selectively prepared. Structural and theoretical analysis of the features of chemical bonding within Ru-B-B-Cu and Ru-B-B-Pd fragments is presented.

Abstract
Carboranes are a class of polyhedral carbon-boron molecular clusters featuring three-dimensional aromaticity, which are often considered as 3D analogues of benzene. Their unique structural and electronic properties make them invaluable building blocks for applications ranging from functional materials to versatile ligands to pharmaceuticals. Thus, selective functionalization of carboranes has received tremendous research interest. In earlier days, the vast majority of the works in this area were focused on cage carbon functionalization via facile deprotonation of cage CH, followed by reaction with electrophiles. On the contrary, cage B-H activation is very challenging since the 10 B-H bonds on o-carborane are very similar, and how to achieve the desired transformation at specific boron vertex is a long-standing issue. As carbon is considered more electronegative than boron, this property results in different vertex charges on the o-carborane cage, which follow the order B(3,6)-H ≪ B(4,5,7,11)-H < B(8,10)-H < B(9,12)-H. We thought that this difference may trigger the favorite interaction of a proper transition metal complex with a specific B-H bond of carborane, which could be utilized to solve the selectivity issue. Accordingly, our strategy is described as follows: (1) electron-rich transition metal catalysts are good for the activation of the most electron-deficient B(3,6)-H bonds (connected to both cage C-H vertices); (2) electron-deficient transition metal catalysts are good for the activation of the relatively electron-rich B(8,9,10,12)-H bonds (with no bonding to either cage C-H vertices); and (3) directing-group-assisted transition metal catalysis is appropriate for the activation of the B(4,5,7,11)-H bonds (connected to only one cage C-H vertex), whose vertex charges lie in the middle of the range for the 10 B-H bonds. This strategy has been successfully applied by our laboratory and other groups in the development of a series of synthetic routes for catalytic selective activation of B-H bonds of the carborane cage, resulting in the synthesis of a large number of cage-boron-functionalized carborane derivatives in a regioselective and catalytic fashion. Subsequently, significant progress in this emerging area has been made.In 2013 we reported the selective tetrafluorination of o-carboranes at the B(8,9,10,12)-H bonds using an electron-deficient Pd(II) salt, [Pd(MeCN)4][BF4], as the catalyst. In 2014 we disclosed the first example of carboxy-directed alkenylation of o-carboranes at the B(4) vertex promoted by an Ir(III) catalyst. Subsequently, in 2017 we presented an electron-rich Ir(I)-catalyzed diborylation of o-carboranes at the B(3,6)-H bonds. We also uncovered the first example of Pd-catalyzed asymmetric synthesis of chiral-at-cage o-carboranes in 2018. These proof-of-principle studies have greatly stimulated research activities in selective B-H activation of carboranes and boron clusters enabled by transition metal catalysts. We have so far developed a toolbox of synthetic methods for selective catalytic cage B-olefination, -arylation, -alkenylation, -alkynylation, -oxygenation, -sulfenylation, -borylation, -halogenation, and -amination. We have recently expanded our research to base metal catalysis. As the field progresses, we expect that other methods for regioselective cage B-H activation will be invented, and the results detailed in this Account will promote these efforts.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed highly selective tetrafunctionalization of 3,6-I2-o-carborane and 4,7-I2-o-carborane has been developed, leading to the preparation of 3,6-dialkenyl-4,11-R2-o-carboranes and 4,7-dialkenyl-5,11-R2-o-carboranes (R = alkyl, allyl and aryl) in moderate to excellent yields. This represents a new strategy for selective synthesis of polyfunctionalized o-carborane derivatives via a one-pot process.

Abstract
o-Carboryne undergoes at room temperature an efficient ene reaction with a large variety of alkynes and alkenes possessing an α-CH proton to give a series of o-carboranyl allenes and alkenes in good to high isolated yields. This reaction has a broad substrate scope from alkyl and aryl to silyl substituents. This protocol provides a facile synthetic method for accessing cage C-substituted carboranyl allenes and alkenes, which may be utilized as useful starting materials to synthesize multifunctionalized carboranes.

Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed iterative cage B-H arylation reaction of a wide range of B(4)-acylamino-o-carboranes with aryl iodides has been developed, leading to the formation of B(5,8,9)-triarylated B(4)-acylamino-o-carboranes with excellent regioselectivity. Moreover, B(5,8,9)-triarylated carboranes bearing three different aryl groups were synthesized from B(4)-acylamino-o-carborane and three different aryl iodides. The order of introduction [B(9) > B(8) > B(5)] of aryl groups into the B(5,8,9)-triarylation reaction was determined for the first time through NMR monitoring and X-ray analyses.

Abstract
Closo m-C2B10H12 can perform as a novel core of globular periphery-decorated macromolecules. To do this, a new class of di and tetrabranched m-carborane derivatives has been synthesized by a judicious choice of the synthetic procedure, starting with 9,10-I2-1,7-closo-C2B10H10. The 2a-NPA (sum of the natural charges of the two bonded atoms) value for a bond, which is defined as the sum of the NPA charges of the two bonded atoms, matches the order of electrophilic reaction at the different cluster bonds of the icosahedral o-and m- carboranes that lead to the formation of B-I bonds. As for m-carborane, most of the 2a-NPA values of B-H vertexes are positive, and their functionalization is more challenging. The synthesis and full characterization of dibranched 9,10-R2-1,7-closo-carborane (R = CH2CHCH2, HO(CH2)3, Cl(CH2)3, TsO(CH2)3, C6H5COO(CH2)3, C6H5COO(CH2)3, N3(CH2)3, CH3CHCH, and C6H5C2N3(CH2)3) compounds as well as the tetrabranched 9,10-R2-1,7-R2-closo-C2B10H8 (R = CH2CHCH2, HO(CH2)3) are presented. The X-ray diffraction of 9,10-(HO(CH2)3)2-1,7-closo-C2B10H10 and 9,10-(CH3CHCH)2-1,7-closo-C2B10H10, as well as their Hirshfeld surface analysis and decomposed fingerprint plots, are described. These new reported tetrabranched m-carborane derivatives provide a sort of novel core for the synthesis of 3D radially grown periphery-decorated macromolecules that are different to the 2D radially grown core of the tetrabranched o-carborane framework.

Abstract
AbstractIn this short review, different phenomena that are triggered by the interaction of different compounds or clusters of compounds with electron-deficient systems, in particular beryllium and boron compounds, have been discussed in some detail. Particular attention was devoted to the huge acidity enhancements that can be induced through the interaction of conventional bases with B or Be containing compounds, which change these conventional bases in extremely strong proton donors. We have paid also attention to the cooperativity between Be bonds with other weak interactions, which results in a substantial increase of their strength, that can lead in some specific cases to the spontaneous formation of ion-pairs in the gas phase. Finally, the behavior of different Be derivatives as electron and anion sponges is discussed as well as the conditions needed to have clusters exhibiting rather strong Be–Be bonds, even though the Be–Be interaction in Be2 dimer is extremely weak. Finally, some attention was paid to systems with extremely short Be–Be distances but without a bond.

Abstract
Palladium-catalyzed dehydrogenative B-H/C-H cross coupling of monocarborane anions with alkenes is reported, allowing for the first time the isolation of selectively penta-alkenylated boron clusters. The reaction cascade is regioselective for the cage positions, leading directly to B2-6 functionalization. Under mild and convenient conditions, styrenes, benzylic alkenes and aliphatic alkenes are demonstrated to be viable coupling partners with exclusive vinyl-type B-C bond formation. Multiple subsequent transformations provide access to directing group-free products, chiral derivatives and penta-alkylated cages. The five-fold coupling, combined with the latter reactions, represents a powerful methodology for the straightforward synthesis of new classes of boron clusters.

Abstract
A ruthenium carbene catalyst containing a 1,2-dicarbadodecaborane(12)-1,2-dithiolate ligand was synthesized, and the structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. This new ruthenium carbene catalyst can catalyze the ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) reaction of norbornene to give the corresponding Z-polymer (Z/E ratio, 98 : 2) in high yield (93%); ring opening cross metathesis (ROCM) reactions of norbornene/5-norbornene-2-exo, 3-exo-dimethanol with styrene or 4-fluorostyrene to give the corresponding Z-olefin products (Z/E ratios, 97 : 3-98 : 2), respectively, in high yields (73%-88%); cross metathesis (CM) reactions of terminal alkenes with (Z)-but-2-ene-1,4-diol to give high Z-olefin products in low yields; homometathesis reactions of terminal alkenes to give olefin products in low yields. Like other ruthenium carbene catalysts, the new complex tolerates many different functional groups. DFT calculations were also performed in order to understand the process of forming Z-olefin products and the decomposition process of catalysts.

Abstract
A binuclear iridium complex, (Cp2*Ir2(CH2O)C2B10H8) (6), with a unique metal-metal bond has been synthesized and fully characterized. Importantly, this complex is constructed via selective C-H and B(3)-H bond activation on the carborane precursor. Additionally, when the proligand (2-pyridine)(o-carboranyl)methanol ligand was combined with a half-sandwich iridium complex, selective B(6)-H bond activation or metal-carbon bond formation can be induced by the use of different bases. And the rhodium complex constructed from (2-pyridine)(o-carboranyl)methanol ligand containing a metal-carbon bond has been obtained and fully characterized.

Abstract
The results of molecular structures, NMR data, and NICS (nucleus-independent chemical shift) and ISE (isomerization stabilization energy) values as well as molecular orbital analyses clearly suggest the presence of considerable aromatic character in the exo five-membered ring of carborane-fused carbo- and heterocycles and considerable conjugation between a 3-D carborane and a fused 2-D π-ring system.
Conjugation between a 3-D icosahedral carborane and a fused 2-D π-ring system is ambiguous. To address this issue, we prepared several carborane-fused carbo- and heterocycles. Detailed studies on their molecular structures, NMR data, and NICS (nucleus-independent chemical shift) and ISE (isomerization stabilization energy) values as well as molecular orbital analyses clearly suggest the presence of (1) considerable aromatic character in the exo five-membered ring of carborane-fused carbo- and heterocycles and (2) considerable conjugation between a 3-D carborane and a fused 2-D π-ring system. These results will shed some light on the design of new carborane-based materials.

Abstract
Carboranes are a class of carbon-boron molecular clusters with unusual thermal and chemical stabilities. They have been proved as very useful building blocks in supramolecular design, optoelectronics, nanomaterials, boron neutron capture therapy agents and organometallic/coordination chemistry. Thus, the functionalization of o-carboranes has received growing interests. Over the past decades, most of the works in this area have been focused on cage carbon functionalization as the weakly acidic cage C-H proton can be readily deprotonated by strong bases. In sharp contrast, selective cage B-H activation/functionalization among chemically very similar ten B-H vertices is very challenging. Considering the differences in electron density of ten cage B-H bonds in o-carborane and the nature of transition metal complexes, we have tackled this selectivity issue by means of organometallic chemistry. Our strategy is as follows: using electron-rich transition metal catalysts for the functionalization of the most electron-deficient B(3,6)-H vertices (bonded to both cage CH vertices); using electron-deficient transition-metal catalysts for the functionalization of relatively electron-rich B(8,9,10,12)-H vertices (with no bonding to both cage CH vertices); and using the combination of directing groups and electrophilic transition metal catalysts for the functionalization of B(4,5,7,11)-H vertices (bonded to only one cage CH vertex). Successful applications of such a strategy result in the preparation of a large variety of cage B-functionalized carboranes in a regioselective and catalytic manner, which are inaccessible by other means. It is believed that as this field progresses, other cage B-functionalized carboranes are expected to be synthesized, and the results detailed in this concept article will further these efforts.

Abstract
The 16-electron complex 2 has been synthesized. It can react with different donor ligands and undergoes M–S bond insertion reactions with DMAD. Complex 2 is shown to react with [Cp*Ir] unit to form a M–M-bound binuclear complex. Interestingly, the metal–metal bond could be broken by HCl to produce the selective B(6)–H activation species.
