Recent Progress on Functionalized Nanoporous Heteropoly Acids: From Synthesis to Applications

Functionalized nanoporous heteropoly acids (HPAs) have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their enhanced surface area and porosity, as well as their potential for low-cost regeneration compared to bulk materials. This review aims to provide an overview of the recent advancements in the synthesis and applications of functionalized HPAs. We begin by introducing the fundamental properties of HPAs and their unique structure, followed by a comprehensive overview of the various approaches employed for the synthesis of functionalized HPAs, including salts, anchoring onto supports, and implementing mesoporous silica sieves. The potential applications of functionalized HPAs in various fields are also discussed, highlighting their boosted performance in a wide range of applications. Finally, we address the current challenges and present future prospects in the development of functionalized HPAs, particularly in the context of mesoporous HPAs. This review aims to provide a comprehensive summary of the recent progress in the field, highlighting the significant advancements made in the synthesis and applications of functionalized HPAs.

Four POM-Viologen Color-Changing Materials with Fast Color Response under Various External Stimuli

Four kinds of polyoxometalate (POM)-viologen compounds were synthesized by hydrothermal method, namely (1-cby)2·[H2(SiMo12O40)]·2H2O (1), (1-cby)2·[H2(SiW12O40)]·2H2O (2), (1-cby)2·(1,1'-bcby)2·{H4[Co4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2]}·12H2O (3), (1-cby)·(1,1'-bcby)·[H(α-PW11O39)CoII(1-cby)]·8H2O (4) (1-cby·Br = 1-Cyclopropylmethyl-[4,4']bipyridinyl-1-ium bromide, 1,1'-bcby·Br = 1,1'-Bis-cyclopropylmethyl-[4,4']bipyridinyl-1-ium bromide). These four POM-viologen compounds exhibit one-dimensional supramolecular network structures. Especially, compound 3 contains a rare sandwich POM subunit {Co4(H2O)2(PW9O34)2}10-. These four compounds can be used as color-changing materials, and they all exhibit noticeable color changes upon exposure to light, heat, and electricity. The discoloration mechanism involves viologen derivatives with electron-deficient properties accepting electrons from POM with electron-rich properties under external stimulation, leading to the formation of viologen free radicals. Among them, compounds 1 and 2 also have good properties for ink-free erasable printing, double anticounterfeiting, and ultraviolet detector because of their rapid color response to ultraviolet (UV) light. In addition, compounds 1-4 also show different color changes in the detection of volatile amines.

Acidic Dressing Based on Agarose/Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40 Nanocomposite for Infection Control in Wound Care

Regulation of wound pH from alkaline to acidic is a simple and powerful approach to reduce wound microbial colonization and infection. Here, we present a nanocomposite material possessing intrinsic acidic surface pH as an innovative antimicrobial wound dressing. This material comprises an agarose matrix nanocomposite containing nanoparticles (NPs) of the cesium salt of phosphotungstic heteropolyacid (Cs_2.5H_0.5PW₁₂O₄₀). Self-supporting films were prepared by a casting method incorporating 5-20 wt % Cs_2.5H_0.5PW₁₂O₄₀ NPs into the matrix. Films are flexible with tensile strengths between 28.55 and 32.15 MPa and exhibit broad biocidal activity against neutralophilic pathogens, including Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and filamentous fungi. The nano-antimicrobial Cs_2.5H_0.5PW₁₂O₄₀ functions as an efficient and self-controlled proton delivery agent that lowers the surface pH of the nanocomposites to the range 7.0 > pH ≥ 3.0. Nanocomposite films containing 20 wt % Cs_2.5H_0.5PW₁₂O₄₀ NPs presented a surface pH of 3.0 and highest antimicrobial activity. Using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, we demonstrated that the antimicrobial mechanism of the nanocomposites is acid-induced because of the transcriptional induction of glutamate-dependent acid resistance genes in Escherichia coli. Additionally, nanocomposite films do not damage skin according to an in vivo rabbit skin model with no derived edema or erythema. The wound care safety of this material is due to low release of heavy metal heteropolyanions ([PW₁₂O₄₀]^3-), no nanoparticle leaching, and proton controlled release resulting in nonirritating acid levels for human skin models.
