State-of-the-Art Optical Devices for Biomedical Sensing Applications—A Review

Optical sensors for biomedical applications have gained prominence in recent decades due to their compact size, high sensitivity, reliability, portability, and low cost. In this review, we summarized and discussed a few selected techniques and corresponding technological platforms enabling the manufacturing of optical biomedical sensors of different types. We discussed integrated optical biosensors, vertical grating couplers, plasmonic sensors, surface plasmon resonance optical fiber biosensors, and metasurface biosensors, Photonic crystal-based biosensors, thin metal films biosensors, and fiber Bragg grating biosensors as the most representative cases. All of these might enable the identification of symptoms of deadly illnesses in their early stages; thus, potentially saving a patient’s life. The aim of this paper was not to render a definitive judgment in favor of one sensor technology over another. We presented the pros and cons of all the major sensor systems enabling the readers to choose the solution tailored to their needs and demands.

Towards one-step design of tailored enzymatic nanobiosensors

NP-based enzymatic biosensors were prepared by the simultaneous encapsulation of glucose and alcohol oxidases, Nafion and noble metal NPs via co-deposition from a phosphate multiple electrolyte on top of the sensor surface.

Highly Sensitive and Selective H2S Chemical Sensor Based on ZnO Nanomaterial

ZnO is worth evaluating for chemical sensing due to its outstanding physical and chemical properties. We report the fabrication and study of the gas sensing properties of ZnO nanomaterial for the detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). This prepared material exhibited a 7400 gas sensing response when exposed to 30 ppm of H2S in air. In addition, the structure showed a high selectivity towards H2S against other reducing gases. The high sensing performance of the structure was attributed to its nanoscale size, morphology and the disparity in the sensing mechanism between the H2S and other reducing gases. We suggest that the work reported here including the simplicity of device fabrication is a significant step toward the application of ZnO nanomaterials in chemical gas sensing systems for the real-time detection of H2S.
