Progress of Photocapacitors

In response to the current trend of miniaturization of electronic devices and sensors, the complementary coupling of high-efficiency energy conversion and low-loss energy storage technologies has given rise to the development of photocapacitors (PCs), which combine energy conversion and storage in a single device. Photovoltaic systems integrated with supercapacitors offer unique light conversion and storage capabilities, resulting in improved overall efficiency over the past decade. Consequently, researchers have explored a wide range of device combinations, materials, and characterization techniques. This review provides a comprehensive overview of photocapacitors, including their configurations, operating mechanisms, manufacturing techniques, and materials, with a focus on emerging applications in small wireless devices, Internet of Things (IoT), and Internet of Everything (IoE). Furthermore, we highlight the importance of cutting-edge materials such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and organic materials for supercapacitors, as well as novel materials in photovoltaics, in advancing PCs for a carbon-free, sustainable society. We also evaluate the potential development, prospects, and application scenarios of this emerging area of research.

High-performance asymmetric supercapacitor based on CdCO3/CdO/Co3O4 composite supported on Ni foam

A CdCO₃/CdO/Co₃O₄ composite has been prepared on nickel foam through a combined hydrothermal-annealing method. An asymmetric hybrid supercapacitor (SC) device was assembled with this composite as the positive electrode and activated carbon was the negative electrode. The SC exhibited a high specific capacitance of 84 F g⁻¹ @ 1 mA cm⁻², a maximum energy density of 26.3 W h kg⁻¹, and a power density of 2290 W kg⁻¹, along with a wide potential window of 1.5 V and long cycle life (92% after 6000 cycles). SCs assembled in series powered various light-emitting diodes and moved an electrical mini-motor.

This work presents for the first time a CdCO₃/CdO/Co₃O₄@nickel foam based supercapacitor with high both specific capacitance and energy density, a widespread potential window and a long cycle life.

Laser-Assisted Fabrication of Microphotocapacitors with High Energy Density and Output Voltage

Self-powered devices have great potential in daily applications ranging from portable electronics to wearable body sensors, yet their working lifetime and performance are normally limited by the low energy density of the power unit as well as additional resistive losses induced by connections between electronic and power moieties. Herein, we report an effective programmable laser-assisted fabrication of facilely integrated microphotocapacitors (integrated devices of solar cells and microsupercapacitors, mPCs) exhibiting high output voltage and energy density (32.3 μWh cm^-2). An mPC pack (8 mPCs in series within a size of 3 × 3 cm²) delivers an excellent V_oc of 7.3 V, and an output voltage of 90 V can be obtained with an array of 14 mPC packs when tested outdoors under solar illumination (63 mW cm^-2), setting a new benchmark for integrated self-charging power packs. These devices have also shown good stability (stable operation over 2000 cycles, 2.1 × 10⁴ s) and performance under low- or intermittent-intensity light illuminations, highlighting their abilities to work indoors or under cloudy weather.

A solid-state integrated photo-supercapacitor based on ZnO nanorod arrays decorated with Ag2S quantum dots as the photoanode and a PEDOT charge storage counter-electrode

A planar solid-state photocapacitor with two electrodes has been prepared for the first time using a passivated film of ZnS with Ag2S quantum dots deposited on ZnO nanorods, which were electrochemically grown on ZnO seed layers, as the photoanode. The supercapacitor part is composed of a electrodeposited poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene) PEDOT film as the counter-electrode and an ionic liquid-based electrolyte between them deposited by the dip coating method. The different nanostructures and electrodes were morphologically and structurally characterized, and the device was electrochemically characterized and could reach a potential of 0.33 V during photocharge and a storage efficiency of 6.83%.
