Negative thermal expansion and linear compressibility in 1H-imidazol-3-ium 2-hydroxybenzoate with a helical network of hydrogen bonds

1H-Imidazol-3-ium-2-hydroxybenzoate (imidazolium salicylate or SalImi) is an organic ionic crystal with a helical hydrogen-bonded network. Crystallographic structure and quantum theory of atoms in molecule calculations are used to analyse the helical structure parameters. The negative area and negative linear temperature expansion occur in the range from 300 to 180 K and 180 to 100 K, respectively. Hydrogen bonding coupling below 180 K is associated with the temperature change in crystal behaviour. The crystal displays negative linear compressibility in the a-direction. The negative temperature expansion and negative linear compressibility are described by the "helical" mechanism. X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopy were used for the structural and macroscopic analysis. The paper presents an analysis of the crystalline structure in the temperature range from 100 to 300 K and pressures from atmospheric to 2.27 GPa. In addition, the vibrational structure was analysed using Raman and infrared spectroscopy in the temperature range from 5 to 300 K and pressures from atmospheric to 3.56 GPa.

Anisotropic Thermal Expansion of Structurally Related Lanthanide-Mercury(II) Cyanide Coordination Polymers

Three sets of related lanthanide-mercury(II) cyanide coordination polymers were synthesized by the reaction of LnCl3·xH2O (Ln = Ce, Nd, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Tm, Yb, and Lu) with Hg(CN)2 and structurally characterized. [Ce(OH2)5][Hg(CN)2Cl]3·2H2O is a 3-D material with sheet-based architecture; its thermal expansion behavior shows uniaxial negative thermal expansion (-18.3(8), 39(2), and 68.3(16) ppm K-1 along the a, b, and c axes, respectively). This anisotropic thermal behavior is postulated to be driven elastically by weak Hg···Cl interactions: large area expansion of the sheets causes negative thermal expansion in the perpendicular direction. Using lanthanides heavier than Ce yielded 2-D sheet-based compounds with the formula [Ln(OH2)x]2[Hg(CN)2]5Cl6·2H2O (Ln = Nd and Eu, x = 7; Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Tm, Yb, and Lu, x = 6). Although there was also evidence for elastic behavior within these materials, both showed uniaxial zero thermal expansion (Ln = Nd: 27.9(17), 22.4(10), and 0.6(12) ppm K-1 along the I, II, and III principal axes, respectively; Ln = Tb: 39.6(12), 1.1(17), and 36.1(7) ppm K-1 along the a, b, and c axes, respectively). Despite their similar structural architecture, this zero thermal expansion was found to occur in different directions─within the plane of the 2-D sheets for [Nd(OH2)7]2[Hg(CN)2]5Cl6·2H2O but in the direction perpendicular to the 2-D sheets for [Tb(OH2)6]2[Hg(CN)2]5Cl6·2H2O. Overall, this system of compounds reveals the delicate relationship between coordination polymer structure and thermal expansion.

Helical model of compression and thermal expansion

A negative linear temperature expansion and a negative linear compressibility were observed for imidazolium benzoate salt. Its strongly anisotropic strain induced by the temperature and pressure changes has been explained by the mechanism of H-bonded helices deformed in the structure. X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopy were used to analyze interactions in the crystal. The Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAiM) approach was applied to analyze the hydrogen bonds and other interactions. In the salt under study, the interactions within the helix are substantially higher in energy than between helices. With decreasing temperature and increasing pressure, the value of the helix pitch increases while the value of the semi-major axis decreases, which results in the negative linear expansion and negative linear compression, respectively.

Molecular tiltation and supramolecular interactions induced uniaxial NTE and biaxial PTE in bis-imidazole-based co-crystals

Large Differences in Carbon Dioxide and Water Sorption Capabilities in a System of Closely Related Isoreticular Cd(II)-based Mixed-Ligand Metal-Organic Frameworks

We report the synthesis of two isoreticular, mixed-ligand metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), [Cd(μ₂-mia)(μ₂-bpe)]_n·n(DMF)_0.5·n(H₂O)_0.5 (1) and [Cd(μ₂-nia)(μ₂-bpee)]_n·nDMF (2), where mia = 5-methoxyisophthalate, nia = 5-nitroisophthalate, bpe = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane, bpee = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene, and DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide. Variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction studies confirmed that both MOFs remain crystalline with activation at high temperatures. Variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies were performed on 1, 2, and a previously published, isoreticular structure, [Cd(μ₂-nia)(μ₂-bpe)_1.5]_n·nDMF_0.84 (3). These studies show that upon desolvation that monocrystallinity is retained to significantly higher temperatures for 2 and 3 when compared to 1 for which only a partially desolvated crystal structure could be obtained. Carbon dioxide sorption is negligible for 1 at 195 and 298 K, while it is higher for 2 than 3 at 298 K and reversed at 195 K. Water vapor sorption increases in the order 1, 2, and 3. On the contrary, water liquid sorption was significantly higher for 1 when compared to 2. The variable-temperature structures of the (partially) desolvated forms of 1, 2, and 3 give some insight into the reasons for the remarkably different gas, vapor, and liquid sorption properties.

Influence of molecular width on the thermal expansion in solids

It has been shown that the thermal expansion would be higher in a direction along which the molecular width is shorter and it would be smaller if the molecular width is longer along that direction.

Switching from positive to negative axial thermal expansion in two organic crystalline compounds with similar packing

Switching from positive to negative axial thermal expansion in pure organic materials is reported for the first time. This rare phenomenon has been rationalized based on the packing of molecules in crystal structures and transverse thermal vibrations of atoms in the molecule. Unique packing of the molecules in the crystal structure contributes to the restricted movement of molecules along the c axis. Subsequently, contraction of molecular dimensions with increasing temperature, due to transverse vibrations of some atoms, assists with the switch from Positive Thermal Expansion (PTE) to Negative Thermal Expansion (NTE).
