How the Position of Substitution Affects Intermolecular Bonding in Halogen Derivatives of Carboranes: Crystal Structures of 1,2,3- and 8,9,12-Triiodo- and 8,9,12-Tribromo ortho-Carboranes

The crystal structures of two isomeric triiodo derivatives of ortho-carborane containing substituents in the three most electron-withdrawing positions of the carborane cage, 1,2,3-I₃-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₉, and the three most electron-donating positions, 8,9,12-I₃-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₉, as well as the crystal structure of 8,9,12-Br₃-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₉, were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the structure of 1,2,3-I₃-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₉, an iodine atom attached to the boron atom (position 3) donates its lone pairs simultaneously to the σ-holes of both iodine atoms attached to the carbon atoms (positions 1 and 2) with the I⋯I distance of 3.554(2) Å and the C-I⋯I and B-I⋯I angles of 169.2(2)° and 92.2(2)°, respectively. The structure is additionally stabilized by a few B-H⋯I-shortened contacts. In the structure of 8,9,12-I₃-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₉, the I⋯I contacts of type II are very weak (the I⋯I distance is 4.268(4) Å, the B8-I8⋯I12 and B12-I12⋯I8 angles are 130.2(3)° and 92.2(3)°) and can only be regarded as dihalogen bonds formally. In comparison with the latter, the structure of 8,9,12-Br₃-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₉ demonstrates both similarities and differences. No Br⋯Br contacts of type II are observed, while there are two Br⋯Br halogen bonds of type I.

Iodoperchlorobenzene acts as a dual halogen-bond donor to template a [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction within an organic co-crystal

Computational insight into the halogen bonded self-assembly of hexa-coordinated metalloporphyrins

We demonstrate herein a computational study probing the influence of metalloporphyrins on intermolecular halogen bonding (XB) during supramolecular self-assembly. The results demonstrate that porphyrin aromatic rings can activate or deactivate halogen bonding interactions, especially those on axial ligands, and further influence the preference type of halogen···halogen bonding during the supramolecular self-assembly. Calculations show that the halogen atom present at the equatorial position has a higher sigma hole potential (V_S,max) than that at the axial position. The computational analysis and our observations from the X-ray structure analysis are in good agreement. From structural analysis it is clear that equatorial halogen atoms prefer to participate in Type-II XB interactions whereas the axial halogen atoms either participate in Type-I XB interaction or reluctant to participate in XB interactions due to the decrease of their sigma hole potential. Thus, we demonstrate, herein, for the first time a computational study probing the direct influence of the porphyrin's ring current on the sigma hole potential (V_S,max) of the halogen atoms and subsequently the effects of the supramolecular self-assembly.

A Novel Halogen Bond Acceptor: 1-(4-Pyridyl)-4-Thiopyridine (PTP) Zwitterion

Sulfur is a widely used halogen bond (XB) acceptor, but only a limited number of neutral XB acceptors with bifurcated sp3-S sites have been reported. In this work a new bidentate XB acceptor, 1-(4-pyridyl)-4-thiopyridine (PTP), which combines sp3-S and sp2-N acceptor sites, is introduced. Three halogen bonded cocrystals were obtained by using 1,4-diiodobenzene (DIB), 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (DIFB), and iodopentafluorobenzene (IPFB) as XB donors and PTP as acceptor. The structures of the cocrystals showed some XB selectivity between the S and N donors in PTP. However, the limited contribution of XB to the overall molecular packing in these three cocrystals and the results from DSC measurements clearly point out the synergetic influence and interplay of all noncovalent interactions in crystal packing of these compounds.

Dihalomethanes as Bent Bifunctional XB/XB-Donating Building Blocks for Construction of Metal-involving Halogen Bonded Hexagons

The dihalomethanes CH₂ X₂ (X=Cl, Br, I) were co-crystallized with the isocyanide complexes trans-[MX^M ₂ (CNC₆ H₄ -4-X^C )₂ ] (M=Pd, Pt; X^M =Br, I; X^C =F, Cl, Br) to give an extended series comprising 15 X-ray structures of isostructural adducts featuring 1D metal-involving hexagon-like arrays. In these structures, CH₂ X₂ behave as bent bifunctional XB/XB-donating building blocks, whereas trans-[MX^M ₂ (CNC₆ H₄ -4-X^C )₂ ] act as a linear XB/XB acceptors. Results of DFT calculations indicate that all XCH₂ -X⋅⋅⋅X^M -M contacts are typical noncovalent interactions with estimated strengths in the range of 1.3-3.2 kcal mol^-1 . A CCDC search reveals that hexagon-like arrays are rather common but previously overlooked structural motives for adducts of trans-bis(halide) complexes and halomethanes.
