Abstract
Photophysical and magnetic properties arising from both ground and excited states of lanthanoid ions are relevant for numerous applications. These properties can be substantially affected, both adversely and beneficially, by ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) states. However, probing LMCT states remains a significant challenge in f-block chemistry, particularly in the solid state. Intriguingly, the europium compounds [EuIII(18-c-6)(X4Cat)(NO3)]·MeCN (18-c-6 = 18-crown-6; X = Cl (tetrachlorocatecholate, 1-Eu) or Br (tetrabromocatecholate, 2-Eu) are distinctly darkly-colored, in marked contrast to the analogues with other lanthanoid ions in the 1-Ln and 2-Ln series (Ln = La, Ce, Nd, Gd, Tb, and Dy). Herein, we report a multi-technique investigation of these compounds that has allowed elucidation of the LMCT character of the relevant absorption bands using magnetometry, absorption and emission spectroscopies, and solid-state electrochemistry. To support experimental observations, we present a semi-quantitative multireference ab initio model that (i) captures the anomalously low-lying LMCT excited state observed in the visible spectrum of 1-Eu (and its absence in the other 1-Ln analogues); (ii) elucidates the contribution of the LMCT excitation to the crystal field split 7FJ ground-state wave functions; and (iii) identifies the crucial role played by radial dynamical correlation of the EuIII 4f electrons in the description of the LMCT excited state, modeled by the inclusion of 4f → 5f excitations in the optimized wave function. By providing a set of experimental and theoretical tools, this work establishes a framework for the elucidation of LMCT excited states in lanthanoid compounds in the solid state.

Abstract
The effect of temperature upon the lanthanide luminescence lifetime and intensity has been investigated in toluene solution for the complexes LnPhen(TTA)3 (Ln = Eu, Sm, Nd, Yb; Phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; TTA = thenoyltrifluoroacetonate). Thermally excited back-transfer to a charge transfer state was found to occur for Ln = Eu and can be explained by lifetime and intensity back-transfer models. The emission intensity and lifetime were also quenched with increasing temperature for Ln = Sm, and the activation energy for nonradiative decay is similar to that for the thermal population of Sm3+ excited states. Unusual behavior for lifetime and intensity was found for both Ln = Nd, Yb. The usually assumed equivalence of τ/τ0 = I/I0 (where τ is lifetime and I is intensity) does not hold for these cases. We infer that for these lanthanide systems the intensity decreases with temperature in the stage prior to population of the luminescent state. The lifetime changes are discussed.

Abstract
![]()
We report a macrocyclic
ligand (H3L6) based
on a 3,6,10,13-tetraaza-1,8(2,6)-dipyridinacyclotetradecaphane
platform containing three acetate pendant arms and a benzyl group
attached to the fourth nitrogen atom of the macrocycle. The X-ray
structures of the YL6 and TbL6 complexes reveal nine coordination
of the ligand to the metal ions through the six nitrogen atoms of
the macrocycle and three oxygen atoms of the carboxylate pendants.
A combination of NMR spectroscopic studies (1H, 13C, and 89Y) and DFT calculations indicated that the structure
of the YL6 complex in the solid
state is maintained in an aqueous solution. The detailed study of
the emission spectra of the EuL6 and TbL6 complexes revealed
Ln3+-centered emission with quantum yields of 7.0 and 60%,
respectively. Emission lifetime measurements indicate that the ligand
offers good protection of the metal ions from surrounding water molecules,
preventing the coordination of water molecules. The YL6 complex is remarkably inert with respect to complex dissociation,
with a lifetime of 1.7 h in 1 M HCl. On the other hand, complex formation
is fast (∼1 min at pH 5.4, 2 × 10–5 M).
Studies using the 90Y-nuclide confirmed fast radiolabeling
since [90Y]YL6 is
nearly quantitatively formed (radiochemical yield (RCY) > 95) in
a
short time over a broad range of pH values from ca. 2.4 to 9.0. Challenging
experiments in the presence of excess ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid
(EDTA) and in human serum revealed good stability of the [90Y]YL6 complex. All of these
experiments combined suggest the potential application of H3L6 derivatives as Y-based radiopharmaceuticals. A new versatile asymmetric ligand based
on an 18-membered
macrocycle possessing three acetate pendant arms and a benzyl moiety
provides fast complexation with both natY(III) and 90Y(III), as well as slow dissociation kinetics. A detailed
structural study in the solid state and in solution evidences nona
coordination of the metal ion by the ligand, offering good protection
from solvent water molecules. These favorable properties make this
ligand an attractive candidate to develop yttrium-based radiopharmaceuticals.

Abstract
Transition metal complexes provide photofunctional properties through the charge transfer excited states of their metal ion and organic ligand components. Recently, there are increasing reports on the charge transfer excited states of the ligand (π)- and 4f-orbitals of lanthanide complexes, where the latter are shielded by filled 5s2 and 5p6 orbitals. This area of research is relatively unestablished; thus, the study of photo-excited organic-lanthanide charge transfer would lead to the construction of next-generation photofunctional metal complexes. In this review, we summarize the latest research progress in photofunctional materials using the charge transfer excited states of lanthanide complexes, and discuss the photophysical/theoretical analyses of these charge transfer excited states.

Abstract
We report a detailed investigation of the coordination properties of macrocyclic lanthanide complexes containing a 3,6,10,13-tetraaza-1,8(2,6)-dipyridinacyclotetradecaphane scaffold functionalized with four acetamide pendant arms. The X-ray structures of the complexes with the large Ln3+ ions (La and Sm) display 12- and 10-coordinated metal ions, where the coordination sphere is fulfilled by the six N atoms of the macrocycle, the four O atoms of the acetamide pendants, and a bidentate nitrate anion in the La3+ complex. The analogous Yb3+ complex presents, however, a 9-coordinated metal ion because one of the acetamide pendant arms remains uncoordinated. 1H NMR studies indicate that the 10-coordinated form is present in solution throughout the lanthanide series from La to Tb, while the smaller lanthanides form 9-coordinated species. 1H and 89Y NMR studies confirm the presence of this structural change because the two species are present in solution. Analysis of the 1H chemical shifts observed for the Tb3+ complex confirms its D2 symmetry in aqueous solution and evidences a highly rhombic magnetic susceptibility tensor. The acetamide resonances of the Pr3+ and Tb3+ complexes provided sizable paraCEST effects, as demonstrated by the corresponding Z-spectra recorded at different temperatures and studies on tube phantoms recorded at 22 °C.

Abstract
A design for an effective molecular luminescent thermometer based on long-range electronic coupling in lanthanide coordination polymers is proposed. The coordination polymers are composed of lanthanide ions EuIII and GdIII , three anionic ligands (hexafluoroacetylacetonate), and a chrysene-based phosphine oxide bridges (6,12-bis(diphenylphosphoryl)chrysene). The zig-zag orientation of the single polymer chains induces the formation of packed coordination structures containing multiple sites for CH-F intermolecular interactions, resulting in thermal stability above 350 °C. The electronic coupling is controlled by changing the concentration of the GdIII ion in the EuIII -GdIII polymer. The emission quantum yield and the maximum relative temperature sensitivity (Sm ) of emission lifetimes for the EuIII -GdIII polymer (Eu:Gd=1:1, Φtot =52 %, Sm =3.73 % K-1 ) were higher than those for the pure EuIII coordination polymer (Φtot =36 %, Sm =2.70 % K-1 ), respectively. Enhanced temperature sensing properties are caused by control of long-range electronic coupling based on phosphine oxide with chrysene framework.
