Reactivity of a quasi-four-coordinate butylmagnesium cation

We present the reactivity of the Mg-C and the β-CH bonds in the trigonal pyramidal [(pmdta)Mg(nBu)]⁺ exhibiting a weak Mg⋯F interaction with counter anion, [B(C₆F₅)₄]^-. Instantaneous β-hydride reactivity with benzophenone, reductive alkylation of phenyl benzoate, and straightforward synthesis of [(pmdta)MgH]⁺via metathesis with pinacolborane/phenylsilane are discussed.

Isocyanate deoxygenation by a molecular magnesium silanide

The stoichiometric reactivity of a β-diketiminato (BDI) magnesium silanide towards a variety of organic isocyanates has been assessed. While the primary outcome of reactions of t-BuNCO, DippNCO and CyNCO was the production of β-diketiminato magnesium siloxide adducts of the isonitrile resulting from isocyanate deoxygenation, analogous treatment with i-PrNCO led to multiple products, four of which have been positively identified. Although the specificity of this latter reaction was hampered by competitive isocycanate addition at the γ-methine carbon of the BDI supporting ligand, the identification of [{i-PrNCO}CH{(Me)CNDipp}Mg{Me₂PhSi}C(O)Ni-Pr]₆ provided corroborative evidence for the likely generation of sila-amidate intermediates in all four reactions under study. The formation of [{Me₂PhSi}C(O)NR]^- anions as the most likely initial species formed en route to isonitrile and siloxide formation was, therefore, validated by a computational density functional theory (DFT) study.

Backbone Reactivity of Lithium β-Diketiminate (NacNac) Complexes with CO2 , tBuNCO and iPrNCO

Though alkali metal NacNac (β-diketiminate) complexes have been utilised in synthesis as NacNac-transfer agents, studies of them in their own right with small molecules are exceptionally rare. Here, the lithium compound of the common 2,6-diisopropylphenyl-β-methyldiketiminate [NacNac(Dipp, Me)] ligand is investigated with carbon dioxide and isocyanates. In all four cases reaction occurs at the backbone γ-C atom of the NacNac ligand, which redistributes electronically into a diimine. Insertion of CO₂ gives an eight-atom carboxylate (Li₂ O₄ C₂ ) ring at the γ-C site in a dimer. Insertion of tBuNCO gives a secondary amide at the γ-C site in a monomer with TMEDA chelating lithium. Double insertion of tBuNCO and (adventitious) oxygen gives a dimer with a (LiO)₂ central core involving the latter source. Insertion of less bulky (iPrNCO) gives a dimer with dimerisation through the C=O bonds of the emergent secondary amide function.
