Cu(II)-Metallized Three-Layered Cu-8HQ Complex with Hierarchical Crystallite Morphologies Synthesized via Reaction-Diffusion

Self-organization of regular band patterns of the precipitate via a reaction-diffusion (RD) framework is called Liesegang phenomenon. This non-equilibrium system is emerging as an efficient method for synthesizing materials with unique morphologies that may have desired properties. The formation of continuous precipitation inside a band with poor control over the shape and size of sparingly soluble salts has been well documented. However, only a few reports on forming organic-inorganic bonds are available. In the present work, we demonstrate the formation of 2D frameworks of bis-(8-hydroxyquinoline) copper(II) in the agar gel via RD. The macroscopic particles were dumbbell-shaped, with aspect ratios ranging from 2.7 (inner bands) to 0.7 (outer bands). The particles were composed of ribbon-shaped crystallites at the microscopic level, each with three layers of parallelogram prismatic monoclinic sheets stacked over one another, which could easily be exfoliated. The powder X-ray diffraction patterns at low angles and the surface areas of the crystallites indicated the formation of metal-organic frameworks. It was observed that the sizes of the particles could be tuned by controlling the extent of diffusion using reactant concentrations. Since such heterostructures have energy storage capacity, the cyclic voltammograms of the unexfoliated and exfoliated materials showed that they fall in the pseudocapacitor category with potential application as the electrode material. The frameworks were further characterized by techniques such as optical and electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and UV-visible spectrophotometry.

Overview on recent advances of magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites in removal of heavy metals from aqueous system

Developing a novel, simple, and cost-effective analytical technique with high enrichment capacity and selectivity is crucial for environmental monitoring and remediation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous coordination polymers that are self-assembly synthesized from organic linkers and inorganic metal ions/metal clusters. Magnetic metal-organic framework (MMOF) composites are promising candidate among the new-generation sorbent materials available for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) of environmental contaminants due to their superparamagnetism properties, high crystallinity, permanent porosity, ultrahigh specific surface area, adaptable pore shape/sizes, tunable functionality, designable framework topology, rapid and ultrahigh adsorption capacity, and reusability. In this review, we focus on recent scientific progress in the removal of heavy metal ions present in contaminated aquatic system by using MMOF composites. Different types of MMOFs, their synthetic approaches, and various properties that are harnessed for removal of heavy metal ions from contaminated water are discussed briefly. Adsorption mechanisms involved, adsorption capacity, and regeneration of the MMOF sorbents as well as recovery of heavy metal ions adsorbed that are reported in the last ten years have been discussed in this review. Moreover, particular prospects, challenges, and opportunities in future development of MMOFs towards their greener synthetic approaches for their practical industrial applications have critically been considered in this review.

Facile synthesis of multifunctional zinc vanadate/polyaniline composite for photocatalytic degradation and supercapacitor applications

Multifunctional Zn₃V₂O₈/Polyaniline (ZnV/PANI) composite was prepared by in-situ oxidative polymerization method. The formation of ZnV and ZnV/PANI composite was proved by various characterization tools including such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET, VSM, TEM and XPS analysis. The average crystalline size calculated using Scherrer equation of ZnV and ZnV/PANI were found to be 45 nm and 92 nm respectively. From the Tauc plots the bandgap values (E_g) were found to be 2.4 eV and 2.0 eV for ZnV and ZnV/PANI respectively. The FE-SEM images clearly show the flakes incorporated cluster-like morphology. The BET surface area of ZnV and ZnV/PANI was found to be 22 m² g^-1 and 40 m² g^-1. The XPS results also confirm the successful formation of ZnV/PANI composite. The as-prepared samples were utilized as photocatalyst and electrode materials for energy applications. The ZnV/PANI composite showed an outstanding photocatalytic activity (94%) in the degradation of aqueous RhB dye under visible light irradiation. The optimum catalyst dosage for the degradation of 50 mL of 1 × 10^-5 M RhB dye aqueous solution was 50 mg. The Langmuir-Hinselwood (L-H) kinetic model proves that the photodegradation mechanism follows pseudo-first order kinetics. Further, the supercapacitive behavior of the ZnV/PANI composite was tested using cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) techniques in 1 M KOH electrolyte at the potential window of 0-0.55 V. ZnV/PANI electrode displayed a specific capacitance (C_sp) of 664 F g^-1 at 1 A/g. The satisfactory performance of ZnV/PANI composite is mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect of ZnV-PANI matrixes with the occurrence of multiple electroactive sites in the composite. The cycling stability test proved that ZnV/PANI electrode material retained 92% of its initial capacitance even after 6000 GCD cycles at 2 A/g. The finding of this study will help to determine the most efficient and cost-effective method for the removal of dyes from textile industry wastewater and also as an effective material for supercapacitor applications.

Dual Functionalized CuMOF-Based Composite for High-Performance Supercapacitors

Herein, we utilized our previously reported highly porous CuMOF, {[Cu₂(L)(H₂O)₂]·(5DMF)·(4H₂O)}_n, decorated with amine and trifluoromethyl functional groups for energy storage application. This robust framework in CuMOF enhances the chemical and thermal stabilities as well as improves the interfacial binding interactions. The poor conductivity of CuMOF usually restricts its practical utility in energy storage systems, due to which rGO was introduced along with CuMOF to form a CuMOF/rGO composite (1) through a facile ultrasonication technique. The synergistic effects between CuMOF and rGO induce a dramatic enhancement in specific capacitance (462 F g^-1 at 0.8 A g^-1) of 1 with a cycle life of 93.75% up to 1000 cycles. The results highlight 1 as an emerging contestant for next generation supercapacitors.
