Abstract
In this Letter, we demonstrate the usefulness of hydrazone activation for the synthesis of biologically relevant tetrahydroindolizines. A pyrrol-derived hydrazone bearing a Michael acceptor moiety in the N-alkyl side chain has been designed with the aim of participating in the aminocatalytic cascade reaction leading to the annulation of the new six-membered heterocyclic scaffold. The application of (S)-(-)-α,α-diphenyl-2-pyrrolidinemethanol trimethylsilyl ether as the aminocatalyst allows for the iminium ion-enamine-mediated cascade to proceed in a fully stereoselective manner.

Abstract
The 2(H)-pyran-2-one bearing electron-donating tert-butylcarbamate (BocNH-) group at the 5- position is a “chameleon” diene and undergoes efficient Diels–Alder cycloadditions with alkene dienophiles with both electron-rich and electron-deficient substituents. Cycloadditions afford the 5-substituted bicyclic lactone cycloadducts regardless of the electronic nature of the dienophile. However, cycloadditions with electronically matched electron-deficient dienophiles proceed faster than those with electronically mismatched electron-rich dienophiles.

Abstract
cis-Hydroindole scaffolds widely exist in a large number of natural products, pharmaceuticals, and organocatalysts. Therefore, the development of efficient and enantioselective methods for the construction of cis-hydroindoles is of great interest and importance. Herein, a novel approach for the enantioselective synthesis of cis-hydroindole scaffolds has been realized through a chiral N,N'-dioxide/Mg(OTf)2 complex catalyzed asymmetric inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) reaction of 2-pyrones and cyclic enamines. A series of substituted cis-hydroindole derivatives bearing multiple contiguous stereocenters and functional groups were obtained in good to excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield, and 95% ee) under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the enantioselective formal total synthesis of (+)-minovincine was concisely furnished with high efficiency and stereoselectivity to demonstrate the synthetic potential of this method.

Abstract
α,β-Unsaturated oximes underwent electrophilic epoxidation with in-situ-generated dimethyldioxirane to give the corresponding epoxides in good yields. This reaction is an example of "carbonyl umpolung" by transformation of α,β-unsaturated ketones to their oximes. Nucleophilic ring-opening reactions of the epoxides afforded α-substituted products. Shi asymmetric epoxidation of the oximes proceeded with moderate enantioselectivity.

Abstract
A new umpolung approach for the asymmetric Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation of electron-poor heteroaromatic systems has been developed. It is based on the vinylogous reactivity of hydrazones derived from heteroaromatic aldehydes. The donating effect of the hydrazone moiety can be efficiently transferred over the heteroaromatic system activating it towards an asymmetric Friedel-Crafts reaction with α,β-unsaturated aldehydes realized under aminocatalytic conditions. Excellent enantioselectivities have been obtained owing to the application of a MacMillan imidazolidinone catalyst. Unmasking of the hydrazone moiety has also been realized resulting in the development of a unique strategy for the asymmetric functionalization of electron-poor heteroaromatic systems.

Abstract
A Brønsted acid-mediated synthesis of pyrazoles from conjugated hydrazones through a β-protonation/nucleophilic addition/cyclization/aromatization sequence was developed. This protocol utilizing the ambiphilic reactivity of hydrazones enables not only self-condensation but also cross-condensation, affording multisubstituted pyrazoles in high yields, with a broad substrate scope. This sequential reaction proceeds under mild conditions via a simple operation. Moreover, the method can be applied to the synthesis of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, Lonazolac.

Abstract
We propose a carbonyl umpolung strategy for activating tropone as a normal-electron-demand Diels-Alder diene. Tropone has low reactivity for Diels-Alder reactions because of its [4n+2] π-aromaticity. Conversion of the carbonyl group into a hydrazone ion (═N-NR-) reverses the polarity of the exocyclic double bond, increases the [4n] ring π-antiaromaticity, and raises the HOMO energy. Computed gas-phase activation free energies for a Diels-Alder reaction with maleimide suggest a billion-fold rate increase when the tropone C═O is replaced by ═N-NR- (R = H or SO2CH3). Other nonbenzenoid aromatics can be activated as normal-electron-demand Diels-Alder dienes in the same way.

Abstract
Despite the proven value in utilizing pyrone dienes to create molecular complexity via Diels-Alder reactions with varied dienophiles, few examples of effective catalytic, asymmetric variants of this process have been developed. Herein, we show that the use of Jørgensen-Hayashi-type catalysts can convert an array of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes into chiral dienamines that can formally add in a Diels-Alder fashion to a number of electron-deficient pyrones of the coumalate-type to generate optically active [2.2.2]-bicyclic lactones. In most cases, the reactions proceed with good to excellent diastereo- and enantiocontrol (up to 99% ee). Models to explain that stereoselectivity, as well as several additional transformations of the resultant products, are also presented.

Abstract
A concise synthetic method for dihydropyrans has been developed by inverse-electron-demand oxa-Diels-Alder reaction of α-keto-β,γ-unsaturated esters with α,β-unsaturated hydrazones as electron-rich olefins. This reaction is catalyzed by Eu(hfc)3 and proceeds in an endo-selective manner. This umpolung cycloaddition affords a variety of substituted dihydropyrans stereoselectively in high yields. In addition, indirect synthesis of formyl-substituted dihydropyran was achieved by dehydrazonation of the cycloadduct. This method is expected to be useful for the synthesis of dihydropyrans and tetrahydropyrans with unusual substitution patterns.
