Zinc sulfide quantum dots/zinc oxide nanospheres/bismuth-enriched bismuth oxyiodides as Z-scheme/type-II tandem heterojunctions for an efficient charge separation and boost solar-driven photocatalytic performance

A novel zinc sulfide quantum dot (ZnS QD)/zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosphere/bismuth-enriched bismuth oxyiodide (Bi₄O₅I₂) tandem heterojunction photocatalyst is fabricated through two-step solvothermal, calcination and one-step hydrothermal strategies. The successfully constructed core-shell nanostructure can increase the interface area and the active sites of the composite photocatalysts. The formation of a Z-scheme/Type-II tandem heterojunction favors the transfer and spatial separation of charge carriers, in which Bi₄O₅I₂ plays a bridging role to connect ZnO and ZnS. Simultaneously, the participation of Bi₄O₅I₂ significantly shortens the band gap of the composite photocatalyst. This dual functional ZnO@Bi₄O₅I₂/ZnS composite photocatalyst has a high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 578.4 µmol g^-1h^-1 and an excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiency for bisphenol A (BPA) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (TCP). In addition, cycling tests show that ZnO@Bi₄O₅I₂/ZnS has a high stability, which is favorable for practical applications. This novel ZnO@Bi₄O₅I₂/ZnS Z-scheme/Type-II tandem heterojunction photocatalyst will provide new ideas for the multichannel charge transfer of other highly efficient heterojunction photocatalysts.

Fabrication of Hybrid Catalyst ZnO Nanorod/α-Fe2O3 Composites for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

This report presents the synthesis of ZnO nanorod/α-Fe2O3 composites by the hydrothermal method with different weight percentages of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles. The as-synthesized nanorod composites were characterized by different techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). From our results, it was found that the ZnO/α-Fe2O3 (3 wt%) nanorod composites exhibit a higher hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity when compared to other composites. The synergetic effect between ZnO and (3 wt%) of α-Fe2O3 nanocomposites resulted in a low onset potential of −125 mV, which can effectively produce more H2 than pure ZnO. The H2 production rate over the composite of ZnO/α-Fe2O3 (3 wt%) clearly shows a significant improvement in the photocatalytic activity in the heterojunction of the ZnO nanorods and α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles on nickel foam.

Facile strategy for the fabrication of noble metal/ZnS composites with enhanced photocatalytic activities

The introduction of noble metal nanoparticles to photocatalysts can effectively improve the separation efficiency of the photogenerated electron-holes. Therefore, noble metal/ZnS composites were synthesized using a low-temperature solid-phase chemical method with sodium borohydride as the reducing agent. The characterization results showed that the noble metal/ZnS composites have been successfully obtained and that the noble metals were distributed on the surface of ZnS. The catalytic results suggested that the composites exhibited improved activity after introduction of noble metals, which can be attributed to the rapid migration of carriers and the enhancement of the light absorption, mainly owing to the tight combination between the ZnS and noble metals and the plasmon resonance effect of the noble metals. The catalytic mechanism was explored by using photoluminescence spectroscopy, photocurrent spectra, valence band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS-VB) spectra and capture agent experiments, and a possible mechanism was proposed. This work provides a new strategy for the high-volume synthesis of noble metal-based composite photocatalysts, which could be helpful for sustainable development.

Broadband photocatalysis using a Z-scheme heterojunction of Au/NaYF4:Yb,Er/WO3·0.33H2O-W18O49via a synergetic strategy of upconversion function and plasmonic effect

One-pot synthesis of Cu2O/C@H-TiO2 nanocomposites with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity

As an environment-friendly semiconductor, titanium dioxide (TiO₂), which can effectively convert solar energy to chemical energy, is a crucial material in solar energy conversion research. However, it has several technical limitations for environment protection and energy industries, such as low photocatalytic efficiency and a narrow spectrum response. In this study, a unique mesoporous Cu₂O/C@H-TiO₂ nanocomposite is proposed to solve these issues. Polystyrene beads ((C₈H₈)_n, PS) are utilized as templates to prepare TiO₂ hollow microspheres. Cu₂O nanocomposites and amorphous carbon are deposited by a one-pot method on the surface of TiO₂ hollow spheres. After the heterojunction is formed between the two semiconductor materials, the difference in energy levels can effectively separate the photogenerated e⁻–h⁺ pairs, thereby greatly improving the photocatalytic efficiency. Furthermore, due to the visible band absorption of Cu₂O, the absorption range of the prepared nanocomposites is expanded to the whole solar spectrum. Amorphous carbon, as a Cu₂O reduction reaction concomitant product, can further improve the electron conduction characteristics between Cu₂O and TiO₂. The structure and chemical composition of the obtained nanocomposites are characterized by a series of techniques (such as SEM, EDS, TEM, XRD, FTIR, XPS, DRS, PL, MS etc.). The experimental results of the degradation of methylene blue (MB) aqueous solution demonstrate that the degradation efficiency of Cu₂O/C@H-TiO₂ nanocomposites is about 3 times as fast as that of pure TiO₂ hollow microspheres, and a more absolute degradation can be achieved. Herein, a recyclable photocatalyst with high degradation efficiency and a whole solar spectrum response is proposed and fabricated, and would find useful applications in environment protection, and optoelectronic devices.
