The mechanical equilibrium of soft solids with surface elasticity

Static wetting of a barrel-shaped droplet on a soft-layer-coated fiber

A droplet can deform a soft substrate due to capillary forces when they are in contact. We study the static deformation of a soft solid layer coated on a rigid cylindrical fiber when an axisymmetric barrel-shaped droplet is embracing it. We found that elastic deformation increases with a decreasing rigid fiber radius. Significant disparities of deformation between the solid-liquid side and the solid-gas side are found when their solid surface tensions are different. When the coated layer is soft enough and the rigid fiber radius is less than the thickness of the coated layer, pronounced displacement oscillations are observed. Such slow decay of deformation with distances from the contact line position suggests a possible long-range interaction between droplets on a soft-layer-coated fiber.

The growth and the decay of a visco-elastocapillary ridge by localized forces

A soft solid layer develops a ridge-like deformation below the contact line due to the pulling force of the liquid-air surface tension when a droplet is in contact with it. We investigate the growth and the decay of a viscoelastic wetting ridge. The global features, e.g. the ridge height, evolve with time scales corresponding to the relaxation of the viscoelastic material. In contrast, we show that locally around the tip of the ridge, the surface tensions not only determine the equilibrium shape, but also have a significant impact on the dynamics, for which the relaxation has a characteristic spreading velocity depending on the solid surface tension. The relaxation time to an equilibrium state depends on the distance from the contact line, which can be much smaller than the long-term relaxation time scale of the viscoelastic material. The different dynamics between the global features of the ridge and the tip morphology suggests an alternative focus when investigating the contact line dynamics in soft wetting, such as stick-slip motion.

Capillary pressure mediated long-term dynamics of thin soft films

HYPOTHESIS

The conventional solid-solid contact is well studied in the literature. However, a number of practical applications, such as adhesive patches and biomimetic surfaces, require a much deeper understanding of soft contact where there is a distinct time-dependent adhesion behavior due to the dual-phase structure (solids and liquids). To understand this, currently existing solid-solid contact behavior is extrapolated to soft contact, wherein the size-effect of the gel film and the preload are typically neglected. When introducing the finite-size effect and preload, gels could experience distinctive long-term contact dynamics in contact with another material.

EXPERIMENTS

We reconstruct the evolving surface profile of the gel films intercalated between a glass sphere and glass slide using dual wavelength-reflection interference contrast microscopy. The macro-sized glass sphere compresses the gel. The indentation depth is comparable to the gel film thickness, wherein the conventional contact theories are inapplicable.

FINDINGS

The gel surface experiences two deformation stages. The natural preload and elastic force develop the contact area in the early state. In the later state, the viscous free molecules of the gel develop the ridge. We discover that the residual surface stress relaxes over 85 hr. Our findings on the long-term gel deformation provide a new perspective on soft adhesion, from developing soft adhesives to understanding biological tissues.

Elasticity and damping ratio measurement of droplets on super-hydrophobic surfaces

The measurement of the droplets' elasticity is vitally important in microfluidic and ink-jet printing. It refers to the ability of the droplet to restore its original shape and strong robustness. This study investigated a novel method to measure elasticity. The plate coated with super-hydrophobic layers pressed on a droplet and the elastic force was recorded by an electronic balance. Meanwhile, a mathematical model was constructed to calculate the changes of the droplet area under the force. The measurement showed that external work mainly converts into surface energy and the damping ratio increases from 0.068 to 0.261 with the increase of mass fraction from 0 to 80 wt%. It also indicates that the novel method can accurately and efficiently measure the elasticity of droplets.

Chemomechanical equilibrium at the interface between a simple elastic solid and its liquid phase

Applying diffusion coupled deformation theory, we investigate how the elastic properties of a solid body are modified when forced to keep its chemical potential aligned with that of its melt. The theory is implemented at the classical level of continuum mechanics, treating materials as simple continua defined by uniform constitutive relations. A phase boundary is a sharp dividing surface separating two continua in mechanical and chemical equilibrium. We closely follow the continuum theory of the swelling of elastomers (gels) but now applied to a simple two phase one-component system. The liquid is modeled by a local free energy density defining a chemical potential and hydrostatic pressure as usual. The model is extended to a solid by adding a non-linear shear elastic energy term with an effective modulus depending on density. Imposing chemomechanical equilibrium with the liquid reservoir reduces the bulk modulus of the solid to zero. The shear modulus remains finite. The stability of the hyper-compressible solid is investigated in a thought experiment. A mechanical load is applied to a rectangular bar under the constraint of fixed lateral dimensions. The linear elastic modulus for axial loading is evaluated and found to be larger than zero, implying that the bar, despite the zero bulk modulus, can support a weight placed on its upper surface. The weight is stabilized by the induced shear stress. The density dependence of the shear modulus is found to be a second order effect reducing the density of the stressed solid (chemostriction).

Contact lines on stretched soft solids: modelling anisotropic surface stresses

We present fully analytical solutions for the deformation of a stretched soft substrate due to the static wetting of a large liquid droplet, and compare our solutions to recently published experiments (Xu et al. 2018 Soft Matter 14, 916–920 (doi:10.1039/C7SM02431B)). Following a Green’s function approach, we extend the surface-stress regularized Flamant–Cerruti problem to account for uniaxial pre-strains of the substrate. Surface profiles, including the heights and opening angles of wetting ridges, are provided for linearized and finite kinematics. We fit experimental wetting ridge shapes as a function of applied strain using two free parameters, the surface Lamé coefficients. In comparison with experiments, we find that observed opening angles are more accurately captured using finite kinematics, especially with increasing levels of applied pre-strain. These fits qualitatively agree with the results of Xu et al ., but revise values of the surface elastic constants.

Effects of strain-dependent surface stress on the adhesive contact of a rigid sphere to a compliant substrate

Recent experiments have reported that the surface stress of soft elastic solids can increase rapidly with surface strain. For example, when a small hard sphere in adhesive contact with a soft silicone gel is slowly retracted from its rest position, it was found that the retraction force versus displacement relation cannot be explained either by the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) theory or a recent indentation theory based on an isotropic surface stress that is independent of surface strain. In this paper, we address this problem using a finite element method to simulate the retraction process. Our numerical model does not have the restrictions of the aforementioned theories; that is, it can handle large nonlinear elastic deformation as well as a surface-strain-dependent surface stress. Our simulation is in good agreement with experimental force versus displacement data with no fitting parameters. Therefore, our results lend further support to the claim that significant strain-dependent surface stresses can occur in simple soft elastic gels. However, significant challenges remain in the reconciliation of theory and experiments, particularly regarding the geometry of the contact and substrate deformation.
