On the formation of phosphorous polycyclic aromatics hydrocarbons (PAPHs) in astrophysical environments

Energetic and Geometric Characteristics of Substituents, Part 3: The Case of NO2 and NH2 Groups in Their Mono-Substituted Derivatives of Six-Membered Heterocycles

Substituted heterocyclic arenes play important roles in biochemistry, catalysis, and in the design of functional materials. Exemplary six-membered heteroaromatic molecules, that differ from benzene by inclusion of one heteroatom, are pyridine, phosphorine, arsabenzene, and borabenzene. This theoretical study concerns the influence of the heteroatom present in these molecules on the properties of substituents of two types: electron-donating (ED) NH2 group and electron-accepting (EA) NO2 group, attached at the 2-, 3-, or 4-position. The effect is evaluated by the energy of interaction (Erel) between the substituent and the substituted system and electronic properties of the substituents described by the charge of the substituent active region (cSAR) index. In addition, several geometric descriptors of the substituent and heteroaromatic ring, as well as changes in the aromaticity, are considered. The latter are assessed using the Electron Density of Delocalized Bonds (EDDBs) property of delocalized π electrons. The obtained results show that the electronegativity (EN) of the heteroatom has a profound effect on the EA/ED properties of the substituents. This effect is also reflected in the geometry of studied molecules. The Erel parameter indicates that the relative stability of the molecules is highly related to the electronic interactions between the substituent and the heteroarene. This especially applies to the enhancement or weakening of π-resonance due to the EN of the heteroatom. Additionally, in the 2-heteroarene derivatives, specific through-space ortho interactions contribute to the heteroatom effects.

Muonium Addition to a peri-Trifluoromethylated 9-Phosphaanthracene Producing a High-Energy Paramagnetic π-Conjugated Fused Heterocycle

In this communication, we report muon spin rotation/resonance (μSR) studies for understanding radical reactivity of 10-mesityl-1,8-bis(trifluoromethyl)-9-phosphaanthracene. Transverse-field muon spin rotation (TF-μSR) and muon avoided level-crossing resonance (μLCR) measurements successfully visualized a paramagnetic species produced by regioselective addition of muonium (Mu) to the skeletal phosphorus atom. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations for the P-muoniation product suggested two possible isomers. Whereas the most stable isomer including the envelope-type phosphorus heterocycle shows considerably different hyperfine coupling constants (hfcs) from those of the TF-μSR and μLCR, the metastable structure accompanying the almost planar tricyclic π-conjugated skeleton could simulate the experimentally determined hfcs. The metastable planar π-conjugated paramagnetic tricyclic-fused skeleton is promoted by the larger zero-point energy due to the light muon (μ⁺ ), one ninth of the proton mass.

Complex Organic Matter Synthesis on Siloxyl Radicals in the Presence of CO

Heterogeneous phase astrochemistry plays an important role in the synthesis of complex organic matter (COM) as found on comets and rocky body surfaces like asteroids, planetoids, moons and planets. The proposed catalytic model is based on two assumptions: (a) siliceous rocks in both crystalline or amorphous states show surface-exposed defective centers such as siloxyl (Si-O•) radicals; (b) the second phase is represented by gas phase CO molecules, an abundant C₁ building block found in space. By means of quantum chemistry; (DFT, PW6B95/def2-TZVPP); the surface of a siliceous rock in presence of CO is modeled by a simple POSS (polyhedral silsesquioxane) where a siloxyl (Si-O•) radical is present. Four CO molecules have been consecutively added to the Si-O• radical and to the nascent polymeric CO (pCO) chain. The first CO insertion shows no activation free energy with ΔG_200K = −21.7 kcal/mol forming the SiO-CO• radical. The second and third CO insertions show ΔG200K‡ ≤ 10.5 kcal/mol. Ring closure of the SiO-CO-CO• (oxalic anhydride) moiety as well as of the SiO-CO-CO-CO• system (di-cheto form of oxetane) are thermodynamically disfavored. The last CO insertion shows no free energy of activation resulting in the stable five member pCO ring, precursor to 1,4-epoxy-1,2,3-butanone. Hydrogenation reactions of the pCO have been considered on the SiO oxygen or on the carbons and oxygens of the pCO chains. The formation of the reactive aldehyde SiO-CHO on the siliceous surface is possible. In principle, the complete hydrogenation of the (CO)₁₋₄ series results in the formation of methanol and polyols. Furthermore, all the SiO-pCO intermediates and the lactone 1,4-epoxy-1,2,3-butanone product in its radical form can be important building blocks in further polymerization reactions and/or open ring reactions with H (aldehydes, polyols) or CN (chetonitriles), resulting in highly reactive multi-functional compounds contributing to COM synthesis.
