Cation-Exchange in Metal-Organic Framework as a Strategy to Obtain New Material for Ascorbic Acid Detection

Ascorbic acid (AA) is an important biomolecule, the deficiency or maladjustment of which is associated with the symptoms of many diseases (e.g., cardiovascular disease or cancer). Therefore, there is a need to develop a fluorescent probe capable of detecting AA in aqueous media. Here, we report the synthesis, structural, and spectroscopic characterization (by means of, e.g., XRD, XPS, IR and Raman spectroscopy, TG, SEM, and EDS analyses), as well as the photoluminescent properties of a metal-organic framework (MOF) based on Cu²⁺ and Eu³⁺ ions. The ion-exchange process of the extraframework cation in anionic Cu-based MOF is proposed as an appropriate strategy to obtain a new material with a nondisturbed structure and a sensitivity to interaction with AA. Accordingly, a novel Eu[Cu₃(μ₃-OH)(μ₃-4-carboxypyrazolato)₃] compound for the selective optical detection of AA with a short detection time of 5 min is described.

Fluorinated metal-organic frameworks for gas separation

Fluorinated metal-organic frameworks (F-MOFs) as fast-growing porous materials have revolutionized the field of gas separation due to their tunable pore apertures, appealing chemical features, and excellent stability. A deep understanding of their structure-performance relationships is critical for the synthesis and development of new F-MOFs. This critical review has focused on several strategies for the precise design and synthesis of new F-MOFs with structures tuned for specific gas separation purposes. First, the basic principles and concepts of F-MOFs as well as their structure, synthesis and modification and their structure to property relationships are studied. Then, applications of F-MOFs in adsorption and membrane gas separation are discussed. A detailed account of the design and capabilities of F-MOFs for the adsorption of various gases and the governing principles is provided. In addition, the exceptional characteristics of highly stable F-MOFs with engineered pore size and tuned structures are put into perspective to fabricate selective membranes for gas separation. Systematic analysis of the position of F-MOFs in gas separation revealed that F-MOFs are benchmark materials in most of the challenging gas separations. The outlook and future directions of the science and engineering of F-MOFs and their challenges are highlighted to tackle the issues of overcoming the trade-off between capacity/permeability and selectivity for a serious move towards industrialization.

Poly[bis-(μ2-N,N-di-methyl-formamide-κ2 O:O)bis-(μ4-thio-phene-2,5-di-carboxyl-ato-κ4 O:O':O'':O''')dicobalt(II)]

The asymmetric unit of the title three-dimensional metal-organic hybrid compound, [Co2(C6H2O4S)2(C3H7NO)2] n , comprises two cobalt(II) cations, one residing on a twofold axis and the other on a centre of inversion, one thio-phene-2,5-di-carboxyl-ate (tdc2-) ligand and one coordinating di-methyl-formamide (DMF) solvent mol-ecule. Both of the cobalt(II) cations exhibit an octa-hedral coordination environment from the four carboxyl O atoms of the tdc2- anions in a μ 4-κ 1:κ 1:κ 1:κ 1 fashion and two O atoms from DMF. A pair of carboxyl O atoms and one DMF molecule connect the adjacent cobalt(II) cations into an infinite chain, leading to a rod-spacer framework with rhombus-window channels, yet no residual solvent-accessible voids are present because the coordinating DMF molecules are oriented into the potential channels.

Theoretical Insight into the Effect of Fluorine-Functionalized Metal-Organic Framework Supported Palladium Single-Site Catalyst in the Ethylene Dimerization Reaction

Ethylene dimerization reaction is one of the most common mechanisms for the production of 1-butene. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received extensive attention in this area since they combine all the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts in a single compound. Here a computational mechanistic study of MOF-supported palladium single-site catalyst for ethylene dimerization reaction is reported. Catalytic systems with both biphenyl-type backbone as organic ligand and its fluorine-functionalization have been investigated to reveal the origin of ligand effects on the catalytic activity and selectivity. The calculations revealed that the nonfluorinated palladium MOF catalyst undergoes dimerization over isomerization reaction. Then the influence of the fluorine-functionalized organic ligand was compared in the dimerization catalytic cycle, which was strongly favored in terms of activity and selectivity. Catalyst-substrate interactions were analyzed by energy decomposition analysis revealing the critical role of ligand backbone functionalization on the activity. This theoretical analysis identified three chemically meaningful dominant effects on these catalysts; steric, electrostatic and charge transfer effects. The steric effects promote nonfluorinated MOF catalyst, whereas the electrostatic effects are the dominant factor that promotes its fluorinated counterpart. This theoretical study provides feedback with future experimental studies about the role of fluorine ligand functionalization in palladium MOF catalysts for ethylene dimerization reaction.

A partially fluorinated ligand for two super-hydrophobic porous coordination polymers with classic structures and increased porosities

3-Ethyl-5-trifluoromethyl-1,2,4-triazole is synthesized by a one-pot reaction. Using this asymmetric triazole ligand bearing one trifluoromethyl and one ethyl as side groups, we construct two new porous coordination polymers, MAF-9 and MAF-2F, being isostructural with the classic hydrophobic and flexible materials, FMOF-1 and MAF-2, based on symmetric triazole ligands bearing two trifluoromethyl groups or two ethyl groups, respectively. MAF-9 and MAF-2F can adsorb large amounts of organic solvents but completely exclude water, showing superhydrophobicity with water contact angles of 152o in between those of FMOF-1 and MAF-2. MAF-9 exhibits very large N2-induced breathing and colossal positive and negative thermal expansions like FMOF-1, but the lower molecular weight and smaller volume of MAF-9 give 16% and 4% higher gravimetric and volumetric N2 uptakes, respectively. In contrast, MAF-2F is quite rigid and does not show the inversed temperature-dependent N2 adsorption and large guest-induced expansion like MAF-2. Further, despite the higher molecular weight and larger volume, MAF-2F possesses 6% and 25% higher gravimetric and volumetric CO2 uptakes, respectively. These results can be explained by the different pore sizes and side group arrangements in the two classic framework prototypes, which demonstrate the delicate roles of ligand side groups in controlling porosity, surface characteristic and flexibility.
