Abstract
The development of excellent bifunctional electrocatalysts is an effective way to promote the industrial application of electrolytic water. In this work, a free-standing W-doped cobalt selenide (W-CoSe300/NF) electrocatalyst with a snowflake-like structure supported on nickel foam was prepared by a hydrothermal-selenization strategy. Benefiting from the high specific surface area of the 3D snowflake-like structure and the regulation of tungsten doping on the electronic structure of the metal active center, W-CoSe300/NF shows remarkable electrocatalytic water decomposition performance. In 1.0 M KOH, the W-CoSe300/NF electrocatalyst achieved an efficient HER and OER at a current density of 50 mA cm-2 with overpotentials as low as 84 mV and 283 mV, respectively. More importantly, W-CoSe300/NF acts as both the anode and cathode of the electrolytic tank, requiring only a potential of 1.54 V to obtain 10 mA cm-2 and can operate continuously for more than 120 hours at this current density. This study proposes a new way for the design of high efficiency and affordable bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Abstract
The direct seawater electrolysis at high current density and low overpotential affords an effective strategy toward clean and renewable hydrogen fuel production. However, the severe corrosion of anode as a result of the saturation of Cl- upon continuous seawater feeding seriously hamper the electrolytic process. Herein, cobalt ferricyanide / cobalt phosphide (CoFePBA/Co2 P) anodes with Cap/Pin structure are synthesized, which stably catalyze alkaline saturated saline water oxidation at 200-2000 mA cm-2 over hundreds of hours without corrosion. Together with the experimental findings, the molecular dynamics simulations reveal that PO4 3- and Fe(CN)6 3- generated by the electrode play synergistic role in repelling Cl- via electrostatic repulsion and dense coverage, which reduced Cl- adsorption by nearly 5-fold. The novel anionic synergy endow superior corrosion protection for the electrode, and is expected to promote the practical application of saline water electrolysis.

Abstract
Tuning the electronic structure of single atom catalysts (SACs) is an effective strategy to promote the catalytic activity in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Herein, a series of Fe-based SACs with S1/2/3/4-coordination numbers on graphene were designed to regulate the electronic structural of SACs at molecular level, and their effects on PMS activation were investigated via density function theory (DFT). The calculation results demonstrate that the electron structure of the active center can be adjusted by coordination environment, which further affects the activation of PMS. Among the studied Fe-SX-C4-X catalysts, with the increase of the S coordination number, the electron density of the Fe-SX-C4-X active center was optimized. The active center of the Fe-S4-C0 catalyst has a largest positive charge density, exhibiting the highest number of electron transfer. It also has a lower kinetic energy barrier (0.28 eV) for PMS dissociation. Organic pollutant such as bisphenol A (BPA) can achieve stable adsorption on Fe-SX-C4-X catalysts, which is conducive to subsequent oxidation by radicals. The dual index ∆f(r) indicates that the para-carbon atom of the hydroxyl group on the benzene ring of BPA is vulnerable to radical attack. This study highlights a theoretical support and a certain guide for designing efficient SACs to activate PMS.

Abstract
Urea electrocatalytic oxidation afforded by renewable energies is highly promising to replace the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction in water splitting for hydrogen production while realizing the treatment of urea-rich waste water. Therefore, the development of efficient and cost-effective catalysts for water splitting assisted by urea is highly desirable. Herein, Sn-doped CoS2 electrocatalysts were reported with the engineered electronic structure and the formation of Co-Sn dual active sites for urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. Consequently, the number of active sites and the intrinsic activity were enhanced simultaneously and the resultant electrodes exhibited outstanding electrocatalytic activity with a very low potential of 1.301 V at 10 mA·cm-2 for UOR and an overpotential of 132 mV at 10 mA·cm-2 for HER. Therefore, a two-electrode device was assembled by employing Sn(2)-CoS2/CC and Sn(5)-CoS2/CC and the constructed cell required only 1.45 V to approach a current density of 10 mA·cm-2 along with good durability for at least 95 h assisted by urea. More importantly, the assembled electrolyzer can be powered by commercial dry battery to generate numerous gas bubbles on the surface of the electrodes, demonstrating the high potential of the as-fabricated electrodes for applications in hydrogen production and pollutant treatment at a low-voltage electrical energy input.

Abstract
Battery-type electrode materials have attracted much attention as efficient and unique types of materials for hybrid battery supercapacitors due to their multiple redox states and excellent electrical conductivity. Designing composites with high chemical and electrochemical stabilities is beneficial for improving the energy storage capability of battery-type electrode materials. We report on an interfacial engineering strategy to improve the energy storage performance of a Co(OH)2-based battery-type material by constructing polypyrrole-assisted and Ag-doped (Ag-doped@Co(OH)2@polypyrrole) nanosheets (NSs) on a Ni foam using a hydrothermal process that provides richer electroactive sites, efficient charge transportation, and an excellent mechanical stability. Physical characterization results revealed that the subsequent decoration of Ag nanoparticles on Co(OH)2 nanoparticles offered an efficient electrical conductivity as well as a reduced interface adsorption energy of OH- in Co(OH)2 nanoparticles as compared to Co(OH)2@polypyrrole-assisted nanoparticles without Ag particles. The heterogeneous interface of the Ag-doped@Co(OH)2@polypyrrole composite exhibited a high specific capacity of 291.2 mAh g-1 at a current density of 2 A g-1, and showed a good cycling stability after 5000 cycles at 5 A g-1. The specific capacity of the doped electrode was enhanced approximately two-fold compared to that of the pure electrode. Thus, the fabricated Ag-doped@Co(OH)2@polypyrrole nanostructured electrodes can be a potential candidate for fabricating low-cost and high-performance energy storage supercapacitor devices.

Abstract
The development of bifunctional electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and cyclic stability is an effective method for electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, a promising hydroxide/oxide Co(OH)2/α-NiMoO4 NWs/CC heterostructure with nanoflowers decorating the nanowires was fabricated on a carbon cloth (CC) substrate via hydrothermal and calcination methods. In contrast to one-dimensional nanomaterials, the interfaces of Co(OH)2 nanoflowers and α-NiMoO4 nanowires on CC provide more active sites for electrocatalytic reactions; therefore, they exhibit obviously enhanced electrocatalytic activities in overall water splitting. Specifically, the Co(OH)2/α-NiMoO4 NWs/CC electrodes exhibit an overpotential of 183.01 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and of 170.26 mV for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) at the current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 1.0 M KOH. Moreover, the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of the Co(OH)2/α-NiMoO4 NWs/CC electrocatalyst was enhanced after long-term stability tests.

Abstract
Superionic conductors regulated transition metal chalcogenides are the newly emerged electrocatalyst in water electrolysis into clean hydrogen and oxygen. However, there is still much room for the development of structural design, electronic modulation and heterogeneous interface construction to improve the overall water splitting performance in pH-universal solutions, especially in alkaline and neutral mediums. Herein, using β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and citric acid (CA) organics with abundant hydroxyl (-OH) and carboxyl (-COOH), a special Ag2Se nanoparticles-decorated CoSe2 flower-like nanosheets loaded on porous and conductive nickel foam substrate (Ag2Se-CoSe2/NF) was successfully constructed by a new method of monometallic cation release of coordinated cobalt. The Ag2Se phase exerts the nature characteristics of superionic conductors to modulate the morphological and electronic structures of CoSe2 as well as improve its conductivity. The generated rich active interfaces and abundant Se vacancy defects facilitate numerous active sites exposure to accelerate the hydrogen ion transport and charge transfer. Compared to the single-phase Ag2Se/NF-8 and CoSe2/NF, the prepared Ag2Se-CoSe2/NF-8 with a two-phase synergistic effect achieves an outstanding pH-universal electrocatalytic hydrogen production performance by water electrolysis, as evidenced by a lower overpotential (60 mV, 212 mV and 85 mV vs RHE at 10 mA cm-2 for pH = 0.36, 7.00 and 13.70, respectively). Only a voltage of 1.55 V at 10 mA cm-2 is required to implement the overall water splitting in an alkaline electrolyzer. This work provides significant guidance for the future designation and practical development of transition metal chalcogenides with superionic conductors applied in the electrocatalytic field.

Abstract
It is of utmost importance to explore bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting. Herein, unique ZnCo2O4-CoOOH heterostructured ultrathin nanosheets on Ni foam are reported that combines a two-step hydrothermal method. This catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performances to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with an ultralow overpotential of 115 mV for HER, attaining an overpotential of 238 mV at 20 mA cm-2 for OER. Remarkably, ZnCo2O4-CoOOH/Ni shows a voltage of 1.494 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Such performances are due to the inter-penetrative pores present in the ultrathin nanosheets that provide large surface areas and expose massive active sites to enhance activities. In addition, the unique nanosheet structure and the 3D Ni foam substrate possess large specific surface areas, which can facilitate mass diffusion. This excellent performance is ascribed to the ZnCo2O4-CoOOH heterostructure that manipulates strong synergy to improve the electrochemical activity. This study offers new insight on an innovative approach for the exploitation of effective bifunctional electrocatalysts with a heterostructure.

Abstract
The fabrication of high-performance and stable electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of importance for sustainable water-splitting technologies. Herein, the cobalt (Co) nanoparticles and molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) heterostructures anchored N-doped carbon (Co/Mo2C@NC-800) was designed as bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting via a simple pyrolysis approach for metal organic frameworks (MOFs) precursor. This composite shows a remarkable performance for HER and OER with a small overpotential of 121 mV and 311 mV at 10 mA cm-2, respectively. When the optimized electrocatalyst was employed as both anode and cathode for overall water splitting in a two-electrode system, the electrolyzer achieves a low cell voltage of 1.67 V at 10 mA cm-2 in 1 M KOH, as well as a superior and stable long-time operation of 30 h. The promising hybrid material demonstrates excellent electrocatalysis performance due to effective combination of the best of both worlds: Mo2C with remarkable HER performance and Co nanoparticles with excellent OER activity. The Mo2C possesses strong hydrogen binding energy and Co exhibits prominent electrical conductivity, thus the construction of heterostructures achieves more active sites with different functions and significantly boosts HER and OER process. The novel and effective synthesis strategy provides new insights into the design of outstanding non-noble metal bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.
