Photoelectrochemical sensors based on paper and their emerging applications in point-of-care testing

Point-of-care testing (POCT) technology is urgently required owing to the prevalence of the Internet of Things and portable electronics. In light of the attractive properties of low background and high sensitivity caused by the complete separation of excitation source and detection signal, the paper-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors, featured with fast in analysis, disposable and environmental-friendly have become one of the most promising strategies in POCT. Therefore, in this review, the latest advances and principal issues in the design and fabrication of portable paper-based PEC sensors for POCT are systematically discussed. Primarily, the flexible electronic devices that can be constructed by paper and the reasons why they can be used in PEC sensors are expounded. Afterwards, the photosensitive materials involved in paper-based PEC sensor and the signal amplification strategies are emphatically introduced. Subsequently, the application of paper-based PEC sensors in medical diagnosis, environmental monitoring and food safety are further discussed. Finally, the main opportunities and challenges of paper-based PEC sensing platforms for POCT are briefly summarized. It provides a distinct perspective for researchers to construct paper-based PEC sensors with portable and cost-effective, hoping to enlighten the fast development of POCT soon after, as well as benefit human society.

Tungsten-based Nanomaterials in the Biomedical Field: A Bibliometric Analysis of Research Progress and Prospects

Tungsten-based nanomaterials (TNMs) with diverse nanostructures and unique physicochemical properties have been widely applied in the biomedical field. Although various reviews have described the application of TNMs in specific biomedical fields, there are still no comprehensive studies that summarize and analyze research trends of the field as a whole. To identify and further promote the development of biomedical TNMs, a bibliometric analysis method is used to analyze all relevant literature on this topic. First, general bibliometric distributions of the dataset by year, country, institute, referenced source, and research hotspots are recognized. Next, a comprehensive review of the subjectively recognized research hotspots in various biomedical fields, including biological sensing, anticancer treatments, antibacterials, and toxicity evaluation, is provided. Finally, the prospects and challenges of TNMs are discussed to provide a new perspective for further promoting their development in biomedical research.

An Electrochemical Immunosensor for the Determination of Procalcitonin Using the Gold-Graphene Interdigitated Electrode

Procalcitonin (PCT) is considered a sepsis and infection biomarker. Herein, an interdigitated electrochemical immunosensor for the determination of PCT has been developed. The interdigitated electrode was made of the laser-engraved graphene electrode decorated with gold (LEGE/Aunano). The scanning electron microscopy indicated the LEGE/Aunano has been fabricated successfully. After that, the anti-PTC antibodies were immobilized on the surface of the electrode by using 3-mercaptopropionic acid. The electrochemical performance of the fabricated immunosensor was studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The EIS method was used for the determination of PCT in the concentration range of 2.5–800 pg/mL with a limit of detection of 0.36 pg/mL. The effect of several interfering agents such as the C reactive protein (CRP), immunoglobulin G (IgG), and human serum albumin (HSA) was also studied. The fabricated immunosensor had a good selectivity to the PCT. The stability of the immunosensor was also studied for 1 month. The relative standard deviation (RSD) was obtained to be 5.2%.

Addressable Label-Free Photoelectric Sensor Array with Self-Calibration for Detection of Neuron Specific Enolase

An addressable label-free photoelectric immunosensor array was designed for detection of neuron specific enolase (NSE) based on TiO₂/CdS as substrate materials. In this work, the hydrothermal synthesized TiO₂ nanorod film is evenly grown on the surface of the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO), and then CdS with a narrow band gap is added for sensitization through successive ionic layer adsorption reactions. The obtained TiO₂/CdS composite materials with matched energy band structures promote the rapid electron transfer and effectively reduce the recombination of electron hole pairs, which greatly enhance the visible light absorption and increased photocurrent intensity. In order to construct a suitable sensor array, the sensitized FTO electrode is divided into multiple regions of equal size by insulating stickers, and then the addressable and continuous detection of multiple samples can be achieved. Because multiple detection regions are prepared and tested under the same conditions, the difference effectively reduces, and the sensor can realize self-calibration and obtain more accurate results. Under optimal conditions, this sensor array can detect NSE in the linear range of 0.01-100 ng mL^-1 with a detection limit of 2.49 pg mL^-1 (S/N = 3). The sensor array has good selectivity, stability, and reproducibility, making it a viable approach for real sample detection.
