Single phase of spinel Co2RhO4 nanotubes with remarkably enhanced catalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction

Fabrication of complex, 3D, branched hollow carbonaceous structures and their applications for supercapacitors

A unique "integrated hard-templating strategy" is described for facile synthesis of a carbonaceous material with a novel three-dimensional (3D) branched hollow architecture. A set of steps, including template formation, surface coating and template removal, all occur in a spontaneous and orderly manner in the one-pot hydrothermal process. Investigations on structural evolution during the process reveal that pre-synthesized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles are first dissociated and then self-assembled into 3D branched superstructures of ZnO as templates. Initial self-assembly is followed by coating of the glucose-derived carbonaceous materials and etching of interior ZnO by organic acids released in situ by hydrolysis of glucose. The 3D-branched hollow architecture is shown to greatly enhance supercapacitor performance. The research described here provides guidance into the development of strategies for complex hollow carbonaceous architectures for a variety of potential applications.

Highly Catalytic Electrochemical Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide on Iridium Nanotubes: Amperometric Sensing of Carbon Monoxide

The nanotubular structures of IrO₂ and Ir metal were successfully synthesized without any template. First, IrO₂ nanotubes were prepared by electrospinning and post-calcination, where a fine control of synthetic conditions (e.g., precursor concentration and solvent composition in electrospinning solution, temperature increasing rate for calcination) was required. Then, a further thermal treatment of IrO₂ nanotubes under hydrogen gas atmosphere produced Ir metal nanotubes. The electroactivity of the resultant Ir metal nanotubes was investigated toward carbon monoxide (CO) oxidation using linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and amperometry. The anodic current response of Ir metal nanotubes was linearly proportional to CO concentration change, with a high sensitivity and a short response time. The amperometric sensitivity of Ir metal nanotubes for CO sensing was greater than a nanofibrous counterpart (i.e., Ir metal nanofibers) and commercial Pt (20 wt% Pt loading on carbon). Density functional theory calculations support stronger CO adsorption on Ir(111) than Pt(111). This study demonstrates that metallic Ir in a nanotubular structure is a good electrode material for the amperometric sensing of CO.

Rational Design of Spinel Oxide Nanocomposites with Tailored Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution and Reduction Reactions for ZincAir Batteries

The unique physical and chemical properties of spinels have made them highly suitable electrocatalysts in oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction (OER & ORR). Zinc–air batteries (ZABs), which are safer and more cost-effective power sources than commercial lithium-ion batteries, hinge on ORR and OER. The slow kinetics of the air electrode reduce its high theoretical energy density and specific capacity, which limits its practical applications. Thus, tuning the performance of the electrocatalyst and cathode architecture is vital for improving the performance of ZABs, which calls for exploring spinel, a material that delivers improved performance. However, the structure–activity relationship of spinel is still unclear because there is a lack of extensive information about it. This study was performed to address the promising potential of spinel as the bifunctional electrocatalyst in ZABs based on an in-depth understanding of spinel structure and active sites at the atomic level.

Boosted Electron-Transfer Kinetics of Hydrogen Evolution Reaction at Bimetallic RhCo Alloy Nanotubes in Acidic Solution

RhCo alloy nanotubes were synthesized via the reduction of single-phase Co₂RhO₄ nanotubes. The reduction was conducted by thermal annealing of the Co₂RhO₄ nanotubes under hydrogen gas flow. The crystallinity of the prepared RhCo alloy nanotubes depended on the reduction temperature: amorphous phase (200 °C reduction) and the crystalline phase (300 °C reduction). The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on RhCo alloys was investigated with voltammetry in 1.0 M HClO₄ solution. Amorphous RhCo alloys provided lower overpotential than the crystalline counterpart despite their similar morphology and composition. Of great interest, amorphous RhCo alloy nanotubes exhibited an outstanding HER electroactivity verified with a low overpotential at -10 mA cm^-2 (-22 mV) and a small Tafel slope (-24.1 mV dec^-1), outperforming commercial Pt, pure Rh metal, and the other previously reported Rh-based catalysts. This excellent HER activity of amorphous RhCo nanotubes was attributed to the amorphous structure having a large electrochemical surface area and maximized Rh-Co interfaces in the alloy facilitating HER. Active but expensive Rh alloyed with less active but cheap Co was successfully demonstrated as a potential cost-effective HER catalyst.

Clean rhodium nanoparticles prepared by laser ablation in liquid for high performance electrocatalysis of the hydrogen evolution reaction

Rhodium nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by a one-step, green and facile procedure consisting in laser ablation of a bulk Rh target immersed in pure water (W-Rh-NPs) or ethanol (E-Rh-NPs). When embedded in mesoporous carbon based inks, both W-Rh-NPs and E-Rh-NPs show excellent activity towards the hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic media, operating close to the thermodynamic potential with 85-97% faradaic yields and low Tafel slopes of 50-54 mV per decade in the low overpotential region (η < 20 mV). A superior activity of W-Rh-NPs with respect to E-Rh-NPs is ascribed to the absence of surface carbon reducible species derived from the synthesis in organic solvent, and thus confirms the importance of the use of water as the preferred medium for laser synthesis of clean nanocrystals in liquid environment. These results provide an important contribution to the impelling need for the preparation of nano-catalysts based on energy critical materials by clean, sustainable and low cost routes.
