Abstract
Water splitting energy production relies heavily on the development of high-performance photoelectrochemical cells (PECs). Among the most highly regarded semiconductor materials, cupric oxide (CuO) is an excellent photocathode material. Pristine CuO does not perform well as a photocathode due to its tendency to recombine electrons and holes rapidly. Photocathodes with high efficiency can be produced by developing CuO-based composite systems. The aim of our research is to develop an Ag2WO4/CuO composite by incorporating silver tungstate (Ag2WO4) nanoparticles onto hydrothermally grown CuO nanoleaves (NLs) by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR). To prepare CuO/Ag2WO4 composites, SILAR was used in conjunction with different Ag2WO4 nanoparticle deposition cycles. Physicochemical characterization reveals well-defined nanoleaves morphologies with tailored surface compositions. Composite CuO/Ag2WO4 crystal structures are governed by the monoclinic phase of CuO and the hexagonal phase of Ag2WO4. It has been demonstrated that the CuO/Ag2WO4 composite has outstanding performance in the PEC water splitting process when used with five cycles. In the CuO/Ag2WO4 photocathode, water splitting activity is observed at low overpotential and high photocurrent density, indicating that the reaction takes place at low energy barriers. Several factors contribute to PEC performance in composites. These factors include the high density of surface active sites, the high charge separation rate, the presence of favourable surface defects, and the synergy of CuO and Ag2WO4 photoreaction. By using SILAR, silver tungstate can be deposited onto semiconducting materials with strong visible absorption, enabling the development of energy-efficient photocathodes.

Abstract
Inorganic perovskites have been recognized as highly potent materials for the display and medical industries due to their outstanding features. However, there haven’t been many reports on their implications as a photocatalyst for the removal of heavy metals. Photocatalysis has been regarded as a significant approach for the removal of pollutants because of its great sustainability, improved efficiency, and reduced energy consumption. Here, we applied inorganic cesium lead halides (Br and I) with zinc oxide heterostructure as a photocatalyst for the first time. The heterostructure has been synthesized by the traditional hot injection strategy and its photocatalytic activity was systematically investigated. Interestingly, the CsPbX3/ZnO heterostructure as a photocatalyst has a homogeneous geometry and possesses an excellent degradation efficiency of over 50% under xenon UV-Visible light. The CsPbX3/ZnO catalyst carries superior oxidation/reduction properties and ionic conductivity due to the synergistic photogenerated charge carrier and interaction between CsPbX3 and ZnO. The recycling experiment showed the good stability of the catalysts. These findings suggest that inorganic lead halide heterostructure has the potential to be used for heavy metal degradation and water pollution removal catalysts.

Abstract
Herein, ZnO nanorods were doped with Co and decorated with CoO clusters through an in situ technique to create a CoO/Co-doped ZnO (CO/CZO) heterostructure at low temperatures (150 °C) on a flexible PET substrate. In the CO/CZO heterostructure, the Co dopant has a low energy barrier to substitute Zn atoms and adsorb over oxygen atoms and their vacancies. Therefore, it decreased the charge density (ND = 2.64 × 1019 cm-3) on non-active sites of ZnO and lowered the charge transfer resistance (317 Ω) at Co-doped-ZnO/electrolyte interface by suppressing the native defects and reducing the Schottky barrier height (- 0.35 eV), respectively. Furthermore, CoO clusters induced a p-n heterostructure with Co-doped ZnO, prevented corrosion, increased the active sites for analyte absorption, and increased the ultimate tensile strength (4.85 N m-2). These characteristics enabled the CO/CZO heterostructure to work as a highly sensitive, chemically stable, and flexible pH and glucose oxidation electrode. Therefore, CO/CZO heterostructure was explored for pH monitoring in human fluids and fruit juices, demonstrating a near-Nernst-limit pH sensitivity (52 mV/pH) and fast response time (19 s) in each human fluid and fruit juice. Also, it demonstrated high sensitivity (4656 µM mM-1 cm-2), low limit of detection (0.15 µM), a broad linear range (0.04 mM to 8.85 mM) and good anti-interference capacity towards glucose-sensing. Moreover, it demonstrated excellent flexibility performances, retained 53% and 69% sensitivity of the initial value for pH and glucose sensors, respectively, after 500 bending, stretching, and warping cycles.

Abstract
Highly efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation under solar visible light is crucial for water splitting to produce hydrogen as a source of sustainable energy. Particularly, silver-based nanomaterials are important for PEC performance due to their surface plasmon resonance which can enhance the photoelectrochemical efficiency. However, the PEC of ZnO/Ag2WO4/AgBr with enhanced visible-light water oxidation has not been studied so far. Herein, we present a novel photoelectrodes based on ZnO/Ag2WO4/AgBr nanorods (NRs) for PEC application, which is prepared by the low-temperature chemical growth method and then by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method. The synthesized photoelectrodes were investigated by several characterization techniques, emphasizing a successful synthesis of the ZnO/Ag2WO4/AgBr heterostructure NRs with excellent photocatalysis performance compared to pure ZnO NRs photoelectrode. The significantly enhanced PEC was due to improved photogeneration and transportation of electrons in the heterojunction due to the synergistic effect of the heterostructure. This study is significant for basic understanding of the photocatalytic mechanism of the heterojunction which can prompt further development of novel efficient photoelectrochemical-catalytic materials.

Abstract
Photocatalysis has attracted wide attention in eliminating volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This paper pays attention to the relationship between structure and performance of photocatalysts based on the fact that catalytic reactions arise on the surface of catalysts and the interface structure of photocatalysts plays key role in transfer efficiency of charges carriers. This review summarizes various surface/interface designs including unsaturated coordination such as oxygen vacancies, surface halogenations, and heterojunctions, homojunctions, facets, etc., as well as the application in photocatalytic degradation of VOCs. This paper reviews the influence of surface and interface properties of materials on VOCs molecules, effective strategies to promote the decomposition of VOCs from the perspectives of VOCs activation, reaction barrier etc., and presents various methods of photocatalyst design appropriately. The degradation path of highly toxic benzene VOCs are also summarized. In addition, the possible problems and suggestions for photocatalytic degradation of VOCs are proposed.

Abstract
Designing an efficient hybrid structure photocatalyst for photocatalytic decomposition and hydrogen (H2) evolution has been considered a great choice to develop renewable technologies for clean energy production and environmental remediation. Enhanced charge transfer (CT) based on the interaction between a noble metal and a semiconductor is a crucial factor influencing the movement of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Herein, we focus on the recent advances related to plasmon-enhanced noble metals and the semiconductor nature to drive the photocatalytic H2 production and photodegradation of the organic dye rhodamine B (RhB) under UV and visible light irradiation. Specifically, the combination of concerted catalysis and green nanoengineering strategies to design ZnO-based composite photocatalysts and their decoration with metallic Ag have been realized by the radio frequency (RF) sputtering technique at room temperature. This simultaneity enhances the interface coupling between Ag and ZnO and reduces the energy threshold. The creation of charge transfer in the heterojunction and Schottky barrier changes the photoelectronic properties of the as-synthesized Al-doped ZnO (AZO); afterward, these effects promote the migration, transportation, and separation of photoinduced charge carriers and enhance the light-harvesting efficiency. As a result, the as-synthesized AZO-20 hybrid nanostructure exhibits a photocurrent density of 2.5 mA/cm2 vs Ag/AgCl, which is improved by almost 12 times compared with that of bare ZnO (0.2 mA/cm2). The hydrogen evolution rates of AZO-20 were ∼38 and ∼24 μmol/h under UV and visible light exposure, which are almost five- and tenfold higher than those of pristine ZnO, respectively. Additionally, the RhB degradation efficacies of the obtained AZO-20 were greater than almost 97 and 82% under UV and visible light illumination, respectively. The achieved apparent rate constant for the photocatalytic RhB decomposition was 0.014 min-1, indicating that it is 14-fold than that in pristine ZnO (0.001 min-1). Heterostructure AZO photocatalysts possess excellent practical stability in the water-splitting reaction and photocatalytic RhB decomposition, posing as promising candidates in practical works for pollution and energy challenges.
