Advancing Strategies of Biofouling Control in Water-Treated Polymeric Membranes

Polymeric membranes, such as polyamide thin film composite membranes, have gained increasing popularity in wastewater treatment, seawater desalination, as well as the purification and concentration of chemicals for their high salt-rejection and water flux properties. Membrane biofouling originates from the attachment or deposition of organic macromolecules/microorganisms and leads to an increased operating pressure and shortened service life and has greatly limited the application of polymeric membranes. Over the past few years, numerous strategies and materials were developed with the aim to control membrane biofouling. In this review, the formation process, influence factors, and consequences of membrane biofouling are systematically summarized. Additionally, the specific strategies for mitigating membrane biofouling including anchoring of hydrophilic monomers, the incorporation of inorganic antimicrobial nanoparticles, coating/grafting of cationic bactericidal polymers, and the design of multifunctional material integrated multiple anti-biofouling mechanisms, are highlighted. Finally, perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in anti-biofouling polymeric membranes are shared, shedding light on the development of even better anti-biofouling materials in near future.

Multi-ionic electrolytes and E.coli removal from wastewater using chitosan-based in-situ mediated thin film composite nanofiltration membrane

This work presents the experimental investigation of flat sheet composite nanofiltration membrane synthesized with chitosan nanoparticles through interfacial polymerization of piperazine with trimesoyl chloride on polyethersulfone/sulfonated polysulfone substrates. The synthesized membrane was tested in wastewater treatment containing inorganic salts and E.Coli. Single binary electrolyte solution of KCl, MgCl₂, MgSO_4, and Na₂SO₄, ternary electrolyte solution, containing a combination of MgCl₂ and MgSO₄, KCl and MgCl₂ and quaternary electrolyte solution of KCl, MgCl_2, and MgSO₄ as feed were treated in crossflow membrane cell for the water flux and species rejection in the permeate under operating pressure up to 0.5 MPa. The rejection of Na¹⁺, K¹⁺, Mg²⁺, Cl^1-, and SO₄^2- was observed to be 81, 28, 87, 96, and 98%, respectively with an average water flux up to 214 ± 10 L m⁻².hr⁻¹ in the permeate for the binary electrolyte solution. Similarly, the rejection for K¹⁺, Mg²⁺, Cl^1- and SO₄^2- was noted to be 33, 94, 97, and 99%, respectively, for ternary electrolyte solution with an average water flux up to 211 ± 10 L m^-2.hr^-1. The quaternary ion system in the feed resulted in an average water flux up to 198 ± 12 L m⁻².hr⁻¹ with the rejection of K⁺, Mg⁺², Cl^- and SO₄^-2 as 35, 87, 96, and 99%, respectively. The model feed solution of E. coli after passing through the membrane achieved an E. coli rejection (99%) with water flux up to 220 L m^-2.hr^-1.

High-Performance Zwitterionic Nanofiltration Membranes Fabricated via Microwave-Assisted Grafting of Betaine

The thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration (NF) membrane is a very important method in solving the water crisis. However, the fabrication and industrialization of high-performance NF membranes still remains challenging. In this work, zwitterionic NF membranes via microwave-assisted grafting of betaine was first proposed. The resulting polyamide layer showed leaflike nanostructures after modification. Because of the enlarged permeation area and enhanced hydrophilicity derived from the unique leaflike structure, the optimal membrane permeability reached 40.8 L m^-1 h^-1 bar^-1. This water permeance was 2.2 times as high as the original polypiperazine-amide membrane, with a Na₂SO₄ rejection maintained at 97.0%. More importantly, the membrane demonstrated excellent selectivity to monovalent and divalent anions. This zwitterionic membrane fabricated by microwave-assisted grafting of betaine provides new insight for industrial scalable NF membranes with great potentials.

An l-cystine/l-cysteine impregnated nanofiltration membrane with the superior performance of an anchoring heavy metal in wastewater

Considerable efforts are being made to develop new materials and technologies for the efficient and fast removal of toxic ions in drinking water. In this work, we developed a sulfur-complexed strategy to enhance the removal capability of heavy metal ions using the polyamide nanofiltration membrane by the covalent anchoring of l-cystine and l-cysteine. The sulfur-functionalized polyamide nanofiltration membrane exhibits superior complexation of heavy metal ions and can efficiently remove them from high-concentration wastewater. As a result, the sulfur-functionalized nanofiltration membrane not only showed excellent desalination performance but also achieved a record removal rate of heavy metal ions (99.99%), which can effectively reduce Hg(ii) concentration from 10 ppm to an extremely low level of 0.18 ppb, well below the acceptable limits in drinking water (2 ppb). Moreover, the sulfur-functionalized nanofiltration membrane showed an exciting long-term stability and can be easily regenerated without significant loss of Hg(ii) removal efficiency even after six cycles. Such outstanding performances were attributed to the synthetic effect of Hg-S coordinative interaction, electrostatic repulsion, and the sieving action of nanopores. These results highlight the tremendous potential of thiol/disulfide-functionalized NF active layer as an appealing platform for removing heavy metal ions from polluted water with high performance in environmental remediation.
