Insight into the adsorption mechanisms of methylene blue and chromium(iii) from aqueous solution onto pomelo fruit peel

Exploring the Efficiency of Algerian Kaolinite Clay in the Adsorption of Cr(III) from Aqueous Solutions: Experimental and Computational Insights

The current study comprehensively investigates the adsorption behavior of chromium (Cr(III)) in wastewater using Algerian kaolinite clay. The structural and textural properties of the kaolinite clay are extensively characterized through a range of analytical methods, including XRD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, XPS, laser granulometry, N2 adsorption isotherm, and TGA-DTA. The point of zero charge and zeta potential are also assessed. Chromium adsorption reached equilibrium within five minutes, achieving a maximum removal rate of 99% at pH 5. Adsorption equilibrium is modeled using the Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Elovich, and Dubinin-Radushkevitch equations, with the Langmuir isotherm accurately describing the adsorption process and yielding a maximum adsorption capacity of 8.422 mg/g for Cr(III). Thermodynamic parameters suggest the spontaneous and endothermic nature of Cr(III) sorption, with an activation energy of 26.665 kJ/mol, indicating the importance of diffusion in the sorption process. Furthermore, advanced DFT computations, including COSMO-RS, molecular orbitals, IGM, RDG, and QTAIM analyses, are conducted to elucidate the nature of adsorption, revealing strong binding interactions between Cr(III) ions and the kaolinite surface. The integration of theoretical and experimental data not only enhances the understanding of Cr(III) removal using kaolinite but also demonstrates the effectiveness of this clay adsorbent for wastewater treatment. Furthermore, this study highlights the synergistic application of empirical research and computational modeling in elucidating complex adsorption processes.

Photocatalytic Activity of BaAl2O4 for Water Purification

Degradation of dyes under natural light sources is one of the most active research areas in basic science for greener technology. In this context, the photocatalytic activity of semiconductors has received massive attention in solving water treatment-related issues as these possess enormous potential for degrading organic impurities. Here, we report that barium aluminate (BaAl2O4, BAO), which has been extensively studied for photoluminescence applications, is found to be a highly potent candidate for photocatalytic activities. We have explored the degradation of dyes (meant for water purification) by using the photocatalytic properties of pure and Dy- and Yb-codoped BAO. Crystal structure, electron microscopy, and Raman analysis of the autocombustion-synthesized pure and codoped BAO samples revealed significant morphological changes such as increased particle size and stabilization of rod-like structures. UV-vis absorbance measurements confirm the presence of multiple bandgaps in the BAO samples, which is substantiated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements. Photocatalytic degradation studies of methylene blue (MB) dye (with different catalyst concentrations, dopings, and MB dye concentrations) have been carried out by using BAO. The kinetics of the photocatalytic degradation measurements has been explained by the Boltzmann distribution function, and the fastest (in less than 40 min), with more than 99% degradation of MB impurity, is reported here for the first time in BAO compounds. Synthesized BAO samples show excellent cyclic stability, which is essential for their potential applications in environmental remediation. The trade-off between the enhancement of surface area and increased particle size is considered the key parameter for controlling the photocatalytic performance of the BAO catalyst after Dy and Yb codopings.

A promising approach for the removal of hexavalent and trivalent chromium from aqueous solution using low-cost biomaterial

Heavy metal pollution is an enduring environmental challenge that calls for sustainable and eco-friendly solutions. One promising approach is to harness discarded plant biomass as a highly efficient environmental friendly adsorbents. In this context, a noteworthy study has spotlighted the employment of Euryale ferox Salisbury seed coat (E.feroxSC) for the exclusion of trivalent and hexavalent chromium ions. This study aims to transform discarded plant residue into a novel, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective alternative adsorbent, offering a compelling alternative to more expensive adsorption methods. By repurposing natural materials, we can contribute to mitigating heavy-metal pollution while promoting sustainable and economically viable solutions in environmental remediation. The effect of different parameters, i.e., chromium ions' initial concentration (5-25 mg L-1), solution pH (2-7), adsorbent dosage (0.2-2.4 g L-1), contact time (20-240 min), and temperature (298-313 K), were investigated. E.feroxSC proved highly effective, achieving 96.5% removal of Cr(III) ions at pH 6 and 97.7% removal of Cr(VI) ions at pH 2, with a maximum biosorption capacity of 18.33 mg/g for Cr(III) and 13.64 mg/g for Cr(VI), making it a promising, eco-friendly adsorbent for tackling heavy-metal pollution. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, aligning well with the Langmuir isotherm, exhibited favorable thermodynamics, and was characterized as feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic with physisorption mechanisms. The investigation revealed that E.feroxSC effectively adsorbed Cr(VI) which could be rejuvenated in a basic solution with minimal depletion in its adsorption capacity. Conversely, E.feroxSC's adsorption of Cr(III) demanded rejuvenation in an acidic milieu, exhibiting comparatively less efficient restoration.

Compounding Methylene Blue with Selenium-decorated Graphene Quantum Dots to Improve Singlet Oxygen Production for Photodynamic Therapy Application

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are known as suitable material to be applied in different fields such as photodynamic therapy (PDT). Herein, GQDs were synthesized by the pyrolysis method and then decorated with selenium (Se). Afterward, they were combined with methylene blue (MB) to increase singlet oxygen generation as well as to apply them more effectively in the PDT method. Furthermore, GQDs were investigated by transmission electron microscope (TEM), photoluminescence spectrum (PL), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), reactive oxygen species (ROS) measurement, and cytotoxicity measurement. GQDs showed no dependence on the excitation wavelength. The result of ROS measurement proves that the combination of GQD-Se and MB increases singlet oxygen production. Moreover, afterglow measurement approved the beneficial effect of GQD-Se on even deep and near skin tumor treatment. Cytotoxicity measurements under dark conditions, cell viability, and the side effects on human cells were determined by (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) (MTT) assay. Our findings show that under dark conditions, even high concentrations of nanoparticles have no significant effect on cell viability. These findings and the high biocompatibility of GQDs indicate the effective application of GQD-Se-MB in PDT.

Adsorption of lead and chromium ions from electroplating wastewater using plantain stalk modified by amorphous alumina developed from waste cans

Waste beneficiation is key to environmental protection and the realisation of a circular economy. Herein, amorphous alumina (a-Al2O3) derived from aluminium waste cans (AWC) was used to modify plantain stalk as an adsorbent for sequestration of lead (II) and chromium (VI) ions from electroplating wastewater. Raw plantain-stalk (RPS) and amorphous-alumina modified plantain stalk (APS) developed as adsorbents were characterised using various equipment such as x-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The FTIR revealed that the adsorbents are rich in functional groups that could promote the adsorption process which includes carboxyl, hydroxyl, and aliphatic groups. Also, the BET analysis showed a substantial increase in the surface area of APS (174.448 m2/g) compared to that of RPS (40.531 m2/g) which could be due to the effect of modification by the a-Al2O3. The batch adsorption studies revealed that the APS achieved 99.38% and 98.33% removal of Cr(VI) and Pb(II), respectively, which is superior to RPS adsorption efficiency. Also, the estimated and experimental data for the APS compared well under all the kinetic models studied with R2 > 0.88. This suggested that chemisorption is the most plausible adsorption mechanism of Cr(VI) and Pb(II) onto the APS. Further analysis showed that the Cr(VI) and Pb(II) adsorption followed the Langmuir model with the RL value of 0.038 and 0.999, respectively, which indicated that the two metal ions were effectively adsorbed onto the APS. Therefore, this work demonstrated that the modification of plantain-stalk with amorphous-alumina derived from AWC enhanced the characteristics of the APS and favoured its adsorption of the selected heavy metals.

Engineered biosorbents of pomelo (Citrus maxima (Burm.f.) Merr) peels modified with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide for methylene blue dye sorption

The pomelo-doped zinc oxide beads (PZB), pomelo-doped titanium dioxide beads (PTB), and pomelo-doped zinc oxide and titanium dioxide beads (PZTB) were synthesized for sorbing methylene blue (MB) dye. Their characterizations were explored by X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy and Focus Ion Beam (FESEM-FIB), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometer (EDX), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). In addition, their sorbent efficiencies for sorbing MB dye were investigated through batch experiments, sorbent reusability studies, sorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamic studies. They were crystalline phases presenting the specific peaks of zinc oxide (ZnO) or titanium dioxide (TiO2). Their surfaces had lamella structures with coarse surfaces, and they also found specific structures of ZnO or TiO2 on the surfaces. Zn-O or Ti-O-Ti was also detected in PZB or PTB or, PZTB depending upon metal oxide types added into pomelo beaded sorbents. For batch experiments, they could adsorb MB dye of more than 86%, and PZTB showed the highest MB dye removal efficiency. In addition, they could be reused for more than three cycles with high MB dye sorptions of more than 72%. They corresponded to Freundlich and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. Moreover, the increasing temperature affected their decreasing MB dye sorptions which were exothermic processes.

Carbon supported ternary layered double hydroxide nanocomposite for Fluoxetine removal and subsequent utilization of spent adsorbent as antidepressant

Fluoxetine (FLX) is one of the most persistent pharmaceuticals found in wastewater due to increased use of antidepressant drugs in recent decades. In this study, a nanocomposite of ternary ZnCoAl layered double hydroxide supported on activated carbon (LAC) was used as an adsorbent for FLX in wastewater effluents. The nanocomposite was characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and surface area analysis (BET). The adsorption investigations showed that the maximum removal capacity was achieved at pH 10, with a 0.1 g/L adsorbent dose, 50 mL volume of solution, and at a temperature of 25 °C. The FLX adsorption process followed the Langmuir-Freundlich model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 450.92 mg/g at FLX concentration of 50 µg/mL. Density functional theory (DFT) computations were used to study the adsorption mechanism of FLX and its protonated species. The safety and toxicity of the nanocomposite formed from the adsorption of FLX onto LAC (FLX-LAC) was investigated in male albino rats. Acute toxicity was evaluated using probit analysis after 2, 6, and 24 h to determine LD50 and LD100 values in a rat model. The FLX-LAC (20 mg/kg) significantly increased and lengthened the sleep time of the rats, which is important, especially with commonly used antidepressants, compared to the pure standard FLX (7 mg/kg), regular thiopental sodium medicine (30 mg/kg), and LAC alone (9 mg/kg). This study demonstrated the safety and longer sleeping duration in insomniac patients after single-dose therapy with FLX-LAC. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) like FLX were found to have decreased side effects and were considered the first-line mood disorder therapies.

Fruit waste-derived cellulose-polyaniline composite for adsorption-coupled reduction of chromium oxyanions

Hexavalent chromium oxyanions, known as potentially toxic micropollutants, exist in the effluents and discharges of metallurgical, electroplating, refractory, chemical, and tanning industries. The exposure of chromium-contaminated water causes severe health hazards. The present work outlines a facile approach to grow polyaniline (PANI) on fruit-waste-derived cellulose (CEL) via oxidative polymerization of aniline; followed by chemical processing with NH4OH to obtain CEL-PANI-EB composites for adsorptive separation-coupled reduction of highly toxic hexavalent chromium oxyanions. The spectroscopic analyses of the CEL-PANI-EB composite before and after adsorption of Cr(VI) oxyanions revealed hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and complexation as major interactive pathways. The adsorbed hexavalent chromium oxyanions are reduced into Cr(III) species by oxidation of PANI-based benzenoid amine into quinoid imine in the CEL-PANI-EB composite. The adsorption of Cr(VI) oxyanions by the CEL-PANI-EB composite showed negligible effects of other anionic co-pollutants, like NO3- and SO42-. The CEL-PANI-EB composite adsorbed Cr(VI) oxyanions with a removal capacity of 469 mg g-1, based on the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The hydroxyl functionalities in cellulose and amine/imine functionalities in PANI facilitate the electrostatic attraction between the CEL-PANI-EB and Cr(VI) oxyanions in an acidic environment beside the hydrogen linkages. The adsorbed Cr(VI) oxyanions are reduced to Cr(III)-based species by the benzenoid amines of PANI, as revealed from the XPS analyses. The CEL-PANI-EB composite showed excellent recyclability and maintained 83.4% adsorption efficiency after seven runs of chromium adsorption-desorption. The current findings reveal the potential of CEL-PANI-EB composites for the adsorptive removal of Cr(VI) oxyanions and their conversion into a lesser toxic form, making them promising materials for wastewater treatment applications.

Influence of ozone supply mode and aeration on photocatalytic ozonation of organic pollutants in wastewater using TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles

Photocatalytic ozonation, which combines the effects of lighting and ozonation, has been shown to enhance the decolorization and degradation of organic pollutants in wastewater. Dye solutions with concentrations of 10 ppm for both methylene blue and methyl orange dyes were used. The influence of ozoneation on the performance of photocatalytic activity of TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles for the removal of organic dyes from aqueous solutions was investigated. To evaluate their efficacy for the removal of methylene blue and methyl orange dyes from aqueous solutions, the photocatalysts were exposed to UV light for 90 min, with ozone supplied either intermittently or continuously by an SDBD cold plasma reactor. The photocatalysts utilized in this study were characterized using SEM and XRD techniques. The degree of color degradation was determined using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results demonstrate that TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles exhibit different degrees of photocatalytic activity for the two dyes. The addition of ozone was found to enhance both the color degradation and mineralization rates of the pollutants, with intermittent ozonation proving more effective than continuous ozonation. The most significant color degradation results were obtained using TiO2 nanoparticles with intermittent ozonation for methylene blue dye (97 %) and ZnO nanoparticles with intermittent ozonation for methyl orange dye (40 %). Overall, this study provides evidence that photocatalytic ozonation represents a promising technique for water treatment.

Preparation and characterization of Allium cepa extract coated biochar and adsorption performance for hexavalent chromium

The elimination of hazardous metal ions from contaminated water has been an important procedure to improve the quality of the water source. Hence, this study presents the fabrication of Allium cepa extract-coated biochar for the elimination of Cr (VI) from wastewater. The synthesized biochar (SBCH) and modified biochar (BMOJ) were characterized by making use of FTIR, BET, XRD, TGA and SEM. Optimum Cr (VI) removal was achieved at solution pH 2, 0.05 g adsorbent dosage and 180 min agitation period. The adsorptive removal of Cr (VI) onto SBCH and BMOJ followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with a satisfactory sum of square residuals (SSR) of 3.874 and 5.245 for SBCH and BMOJ, respectively. Meanwhile, Freundlich isotherm was found to best describe the uptake of Cr (VI) SBCH and BMOJ. Experimental data showed an adsorption capacity of 37.38 and 25.77 mg g-1 and a maximum efficiency of 85.42% and 51.63% for BMOJ and SBCH, respectively. BMOJ also showed good antioxidant characteristics. Thermodynamic data revealed that the uptake of Cr (VI) onto the SBCH and BMOJ was an exothermic and endothermic (ΔH: SBCH =  - 16.22 kJ mol-1 and BMOJ = 13.74 kJ mol-1), entropy-driven (ΔS: SBCH = 40.96 J K-1 mol-1 and BMOJ = 93.26 J K-1 mol-1) and spontaneous process. Furthermore, BMOJ demonstrated excellent reusability and promising characteristics for industrial applications.

Effective adsorption of Pb(II) ion from aqueous solution onto ZSM-5 zeolite synthesized from Vietnamese bentonite clay

ZSM-5 zeolite was successfully synthesized from bentonite clay sourced from Lam Dong Province, Vietnam, using the hydrothermal method at 170 °C for 18 h. The synthesized ZSM-5 (SiO2/Al2O3 ratio ~ 34) exhibited a single phase with high crystallinity (91.8%), and a clear and uniform shape. In a detailed examination of the synthesized material's Pb(II) adsorptive capacity, various factors were taken into account, including pH, interaction time, ionic strength, and the amount of adsorbent. Isotherms and kinetics were examined to elucidate the uptake behavior. Study results suggested that Pb(II) ion uptake by ZSM-5 was most appropriately described by the Sips isotherm and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models. The calculated maximum monolayer adsorption capacity according to the Langmuir isotherm model was 48.36 mg/g. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanisms of Pb(II) on ZSM-5 involving electrostatic interactions, ion exchange, and diffusion into pores were demonstrated using the analytical techniques before and after Pb(II) adsorption. These findings demonstrate that ZSM-5 synthesized from bentonite clay exhibits an excellent adsorption capacity for Pb(II), resulting in promising applications for treating drinking water or aqueous industrial waste containing Pb(II) ions.

Nickel-hydroxide-encapsulated polyacrylamide as a novel adsorptive composite for the capture of methylene blue from wastewater

The wastewater released from different industries is a major environmental issue that has grabbed significant attention lately. Thus, the implementation of suitable routes for the treatment of such water is strongly recommended to reach the level of possible reuse for either industrial or agricultural purposes. In line with such a concept, this research work introduces a new composite structure made via the coating of polyacrylamide by loading nickel hydroxide nanoparticles for use as an absorbent for the purification of wastewater from dye contaminants. High internal phase emulation (HIPE) polymerization was utilized to first prepare particles of polyacrylamide followed by their coating with particles of nickel hydroxide to ultimately obtain the designated adsorbent. The structural features and chemical composition of the synthesized composite were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and energetic dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and N2 adsorption-desorption surface area analysis were employed to detect the textural characteristics of the composite. Subsequently, the efficiency of this structure, as an adsorbent for the disposal of methylene blue dye species from a wastewater sample, was studied. During the water purification process, several operating parameters, namely, retention time, solution pH, initial concentration, and absorbent dose, were investigated. The presented Ni-polyacrylamide composite achieved the promising removal of methylene blue dye. An increased adsorption capacity of 14.3 mg g-1 toward methylene blue was achieved by the composite, thanks to the presence of both organic and inorganic functional groups within its structure. Kinetic and isotherm studies for the adsorption of methylene blue species were found to fit pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. Additionally, thermodynamic measurements indicated that the adsorption process of methylene blue is feasible, spontaneous, involves physisorption, and is endothermic.

The Prediction of Cu(II) Adsorption Capacity of Modified Pomelo Peels Using the PSO-ANN Model

It is very well known that traditional artificial neural networks (ANNs) are prone to falling into local extremes when optimizing model parameters. Herein, to enhance the prediction performance of Cu(II) adsorption capacity, a particle swarm optimized artificial neural network (PSO-ANN) model was developed. Prior to predicting the Cu(II) adsorption capacity of modified pomelo peels (MPP), experimental data collected by our research group were used to build a consistent database. Then, a PSO-ANN model was established to enhance the model performance by optimizing the ANN's weights and biases. Finally, the performances of the developed ANN and PSO-ANN models were deeply evaluated. The results of this investigation revealed that the proposed hybrid method did increase both the generalization ability and the accuracy of the predicted data of the Cu(II) adsorption capacity of MPPs when compared to the conventional ANN model. This PSO-ANN model thus offers an alternative methodology for optimizing the adsorption capacity prediction of heavy metals using agricultural waste biosorbents.

Continuous-Flow System for Methylene Blue Removal Using a Green and Cost-Effective Starch Single-Rod Column

A continuous-flow system based on a green and cost-effective monolithic starch cryogel column was successfully developed for removing methylene blue (MB). The proposed column exhibited high removal efficiency (up to 99.9%) and adsorption capacity (25.4 mg·g-1) for synthetic and real samples with an adsorbent cost of USD 0.02. The influence of various operation parameters, including the flow rate, initial concentration, column height, and temperature, on the MB removal efficiency was examined and reported. The MB removal efficiency remained >99% in the presence of potential interferences, highlighting the good performance of the cryogel column. The Yoon-Nelson dynamic model explained the MB adsorption better than the Bohart-Adams model, as indicated by the higher R2 values (R2 = 0.9890-0.9999) exhibited by the former and current trends of its parameters. The MB removal efficiency of the cryogel column remained at 62.7% after three reuse cycles. The wastewater containing MB collected from a local batik-production community enterprise in Phuket, Thailand was applied to the proposed continuous-flow system under optimum conditions, and results indicated that 99.7% of the MB present in 2.4 L of wastewater was removed. These results validate the excellent application potential of the cryogel column for the continuous-flow adsorption of MB. This study will facilitate future industrial applications and process designs of the continuous-flow system.

Kinetic studies of the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution by biochar derived from jackfruit peel

Kinetic studies play an instrumental role in determining the most appropriate reaction rate model for industrial-scale applications. This study focuses on the kinetics of methylene blue (MB) adsorption from aqueous solutions by biochar derived from jackfruit peel. Various kinetic models, including pseudo-first-order (PFO), pseudo-second-order (PSO), intra-diffusion, and Elovich models, were applied to study MB adsorption kinetics of jackfruit peel biochar. The experiments were performed with two initial concentrations of MB (24.23 mg/L and 41.42 mg/L) over a span of 240 min. Our findings emphasized that the Elovich model provided the best fit of the experimental data for MB adsorption. When compared to other materials, biochar from jackfruit peel emerges as an eco-friendly adsorbent for dye decolorization, with potential applications in the treatment of environmental pollution.

A comprehensive review on adsorption of methylene blue dye using leaf waste as a bio-sorbent: isotherm adsorption, kinetics, and thermodynamics studies

Water bodies with the dye methylene blue pose serious environmental and health risks to humans. Therefore, the creation and investigation of affordable, potential adsorbents to remove methylene blue dye from water resources as a long-term fix is one focus of the scientific community. Food plants and other carbon-source serve as a hotspot for a wider range of application on different pollutants that impact the environment and living organisms. Here, we reviewed the use of treated and untreated biosorbents made from plant waste leaves for removing the dye methylene blue from aqueous media. After being modified, activated carbon made from various plant leaves improves adsorption performance. The range of activating chemicals, activation methods, and bio-sorbent material characterisation using FTIR analysis, Barunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDX), and SEM-EDX have all been covered in this review. It has been thoroughly described how the pH solution of the methylene blue dye compares to the pHPZC of the adsorbent surface. The presentation also includes a thorough analysis of the application of the isotherm model, kinetic model, and thermodynamic parameters. The selectivity of the adsorbent is the main focus of the adsorption kinetics and isotherm models. It has been studied how adsorption occurs, how surface area and pH affect it, and how biomass waste compares to other adsorbents. The use of biomass waste as adsorbents is both environmentally and economically advantageous, and it has been discovered to have exceptional color removal capabilities.

Methylene Blue Dye Adsorption on Iron Oxide-Hydrochar Composite Synthesized via a Facile Microwave-Assisted Hydrothermal Carbonization of Pomegranate Peels' Waste

The toxicity of dyes has a long-lasting negative impact on aquatic life. Adsorption is an inexpensive, simple, and straightforward technique for eliminating pollutants. One of the challenges facing adsorption is that it is hard to collect the adsorbents after the adsorption. Adding a magnetic property to the adsorbents makes it easier to collect the adsorbents. The current work reports the synthesis of an iron oxide-hydrochar composite (FHC) and an iron oxide-activated hydrochar composite (FAC) through the microwave-assisted hydrothermal carbonization (MHC) technique, which is known as a timesaving and energy-efficient method. The synthesized composites were characterized using various techniques, such as FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, and N₂ isotherm. The prepared composites were applied in the adsorption of cationic methylene blue dye (MB). The composites were formed of crystalline iron oxide and amorphous hydrochar, with a porous structure for the hydrochar and a rod-like structure for the iron oxide. The pH of the point of zero charge (pHpzc) of the iron oxide-hydrochar composite and the iron oxide-activated hydrochar composite were 5.3 and 5.6, respectively. Approximately 556 mg and 50 mg of MB dye was adsorbed on the surface of 1 g of the FHC and FAC, respectively, according to the maximum adsorption capacity calculated using the Langmuir model.

Mussel - Inspired biosorbent combined with graphene oxide for removal of organic pollutants from aqueous solutions

In this work, we develop a mussel-inspired biosorbent combined with graphene oxide for removal of organic dyes in water sources. The composite was prepared via self-polymerization of dopamine in weak alkaline solution containing graphene oxide at ambient condition. Morphological and structural studies revealed that polydopamine has gradually grown to cover the surface of graphene oxide flakes, partially reduced these flakes, and somehow form many grains (size around 20 nm) on the flakes instead of making very large aggregates as usual. The mass ratio between two components of the composite was also investigated to find the optimal one which provides enough surface area (20 m².g^-1) and maintain adhesive sites in order to ensure high-efficiency removal of organic molecules. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of as-prepared adsorbent towards methylene blue were found to fit well with pseudo-first order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity (q_m) and Langmuir constant (k_L) were estimated to be 270 mg.g^-1 and 0.49 L. mg^-1. The as-prepared bio-sorbent is very promising for remediation of water sources contaminated with cationic organic molecules and heavy metal ions.

Assessment of Cu(II) Removal from Aqueous Solutions by Modified Pomelo Peels: Experiments and Modelling

In this study, low-cost pomelo peel wastes were used as a bio-sorbent to remove copper ions (e.g., Cu(II)) from aqueous solutions. Prior to testing its Cu(II) removal capability, the structural, physical and chemical characteristics of the sorbent were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis. The impacts of the initial pH, temperature, contact time and Cu(II) feed concentration on the Cu(II) biosorption using modified pomelo peels were then assessed. Thermodynamic parameters associated to the biosorption clearly demonstrate that this biosorption is thermodynamically feasible, endothermic, spontaneous and entropy driven. Furthermore, adsorption kinetic data were found to fit very well with the pseudo-second order kinetics equation, highlighting that this process is driven by a chemical adsorption. Finally, an artificial neural network with a 4:9:1 structure was then established for describing the Cu(II) adsorption using modified pomelo peels with R² values close to 0.9999 and to 0.9988 for the training and testing sets, respectively. The results present a big potential use of the as-prepared bio-sorbent for the removal of Cu(II), as well as an efficient green technology for ecological and environmental sustainability.

Co-Carbonized Waste Polythene/Sugarcane Bagasse Nanocomposite for Aqueous Environmental Remediation Applications

The conversion of worthless municipal solid wastes to valuables is a major step towards environmental conservation and sustainability. This work successfully proposed a technique to utilize the two most commonly available municipal solid wastes viz polythene (PE) and sugarcane bagasse (SB) for water decolorization application. An SBPE composite material was developed and co-pyrolyzed under an inert atmosphere to develop the activated SBPEAC composite. Both SBPE and SBPEAC composites were characterized to analyze their morphological characteristics, specific surface area, chemical functional groups, and elemental composition. The adsorption efficacies of the composites were comparatively tested in the removal of malachite green (MG) from water. The SBPEAC composite had a specific surface area of 284.5 m²/g and a pore size of ~1.33 nm. Batch-scale experiments revealed that the SBPEAC composite performed better toward MG adsorption compared to the SBPE composite. The maximum MG uptakes at 318 K on SBPEAC and SBPE were 926.6 and 375.6 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption of MG on both composites was endothermic. The isotherm and kinetic modeling data for MG adsorption on SBPEAC was fitted to pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models, while Elovich kinetic and D-R isotherm models were better fitted for MG adsorption on SBPE. Mechanistically, the MG adsorption on both SBPE and SBPEAC composites involved electrostatic interaction, H-bonding, and π-π/n-π interactions.

Modeling of methylene blue removal on Fe3O4 modified activated carbon with artificial neural network (ANN)

In this study, AC/Fe3O4 adsorbent was first synthesized by modifying activated carbon with Fe3O4. The structure of the adsorbent was then characterized using analysis techniques specific surface area (BET), Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Equilibrium, thermodynamic and kinetic studies were carried out on the removal of methylene blue (MB) dyestuff from aqueous solutions AC/Fe3O4 adsorbent. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity of AC/Fe3O4 was 312.8 mg g-1, and the best fitness was observed with the pseudo-second-order kinetics model, with an endothermic adsorption process. In the final stage of the study, the adsorption process of MB on AC/Fe3O4 was modeled using artificial neural network modeling (ANN). Considering the smallest mean square error (MSE), The backpropagation neural network was configured as a three-layer ANN with a tangent sigmoid transfer function (Tansig) at the hidden layer with 10 neurons, linear transfer function (Purelin) the at output layer and Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation training algorithm (LMA). Input parameters included initial solution pH (2.0-9.0), amount (0.05-0.5 g L-1), temperature (298-318 K), contact time (5-180 min), and concentration (50-500 mg L-1). The effect of each parameter on the removal and adsorption percentages was evaluated. The performance of the ANN model was adjusted by changing parameters such as the number of neurons in the middle layer, the number of inputs, and the learning coefficient. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was used to evaluate the model's accuracy for the removal and adsorption percentage output parameters. The absolute fraction of variance (R2) values were 99.83, 99.36, and 98.26% for the dyestuff training, validation, and test sets, respectively.

Adsorption of heavy metal onto biomass-derived activated carbon: review

Due to the rapid development of the social economy and the massive increase in population, human beings continue to undertake processing, and commercial manufacturing activities of heavy metals, which has caused serious damage to the environment and human health. Heavy metals lead to serious environmental problems such as soil contamination and water pollution. Human health and the living environment are closely affected by the handling of heavy metals. Researchers must find several simple, economical and practical methods to adsorb heavy metals. Adsorption technology has been recognized as an efficient and economic strategy, exhibiting the advantages of recovering and reusing adsorbents. Biomass-derived activated carbon adsorbents offer large adjustable specific surface area, hierarchically porous structure, strong adsorption capacity, and excellent high economic applicability. This paper focuses on reviewing the preparation methods of biomass-derived activated carbon in the past five years. The application of representative biomass-derived activated carbon in the adsorption of heavy metals preferentially was described to optimize the critical parameters of the activation type of samples and process conditions. The key factors of the adsorbent, the physicochemical properties of the heavy metals, and the adsorption conditions affecting the adsorption of heavy metals are highlighted. In addition, the challenges faced by biomass-derived activated carbon are also discussed.

Highly ordered CaO from cuttlefish bone calcination for the efficient adsorption of methylene blue from water

The aim of this study is to synthesize cheap and highly ordered CaO from cuttlefish bone (CFB) as a green alternative to conventional adsorbents such as activated carbon. This study focuses on the synthesis of highly ordered CaO via calcination of CFB, at two different temperatures (900 and 1000°C) and two holding times (0.5 and 1 h), as a potential green route for water remediation. The as-prepared highly ordered CaO was tested as an adsorbent using methylene blue (MB) as a model compound for dye contaminants in water. Different CaO adsorbent doses (0.05, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 g) were used, keeping the MB concentration fixed at 10 mg/L. The morphology and crystalline structure of the CFB before and after calcination was characterized via scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, while the thermal behavior and surface functionalities were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, respectively. Adsorption experiments using different doses of CaO synthesized at 900°C for 0.5 h showed an MB removal efficiency as high as 98% by weight using 0.4 g (adsorbent)/L(solution). Two different adsorption models, the Langmuir adsorption model and the Freundlich adsorption model, along with pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, were studied to correlate the adsorption data. The removal of MB via highly ordered CaO adsorption was better modeled by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm giving (R² =0.93), thus proving a monolayer adsorption mechanism following pseudo-second-order kinetics (R²= 0.98), confirming that chemisorption reaction occurs between the MB dye molecule and CaO.

Effect of experimental parameters on photocatalytic degradation efficiency of TiO2 nanoparticles synthesized by electrochemical method towards Rhodamine B dye solution under natural sunlight

In this study, ~ 40 nm anatase TiO₂ nanoparticles were successfully prepared by a simple electrochemical method by using succinic acid as a non-ammonia-based electrolyte solution and titanium sheets as electrodes. The effect of experimental parameters such as conductivity (2-12 mS/cm), pH of the initial solution (5-9), current applied (0.05-2 A), and reaction time (1-4 h) on catalyst productivity has been investigated. The analysis shows that at an optimum conductivity of 8 mS/cm and pH 7, an increase in applied current and reaction time maximizes the productivity of TiO₂ nanoparticles. The obtained catalyst was used for photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under natural sunlight irradiation. The effect of experimental parameters on photocatalytic degradation has also been studied. The result displayed that degradation efficiency was enhanced by ~ 3 times in the alkaline region compared to the normal pH condition and increased with an increase in catalyst loading and decreased with the initial concentration of RhB dye. Investigation of the photocatalytic mechanism by radical trapping experiments showed that RhB photocatalytic degradation was mainly dominated by hole and superoxide radicals, whereas hydroxyl radical plays a minor role. Moreover, the catalyst reusability analysis revealed good stability and showed excellent degradation up to four consecutive cycles with nearly negligible loss of photocatalytic efficiency. Thus, the present work offers a new opportunity in terms of maximization of productivity as well as sunlight-driven photocatalytic activity of the catalyst for their industrial application.

Core-Shell Fe3O4@C Nanoparticles for the Organic Dye Adsorption and Targeted Magneto-Mechanical Destruction of Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma Cells

The morphology, structure, and magnetic properties of Fe₃O₄ and Fe₃O₄@C nanoparticles, as well their effectiveness for organic dye adsorption and targeted destruction of carcinoma cells, were studied. The nanoparticles exhibited a high magnetic saturation value (79.4 and 63.8 emu/g, correspondingly) to facilitate magnetic separation. It has been shown that surface properties play a key role in the adsorption process. Both types of organic dyes-cationic (Rhodomine C) and anionic (Congo Red and Eosine)-were well adsorbed by the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles' surface, and the adsorption process was described by the polymolecular adsorption model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 58, 22, and 14 mg/g for Congo Red, Eosine, and Rhodomine C, correspondingly. In this case, the kinetic data were described well by the pseudo-first-order model. Carbon-coated particles selectively adsorbed only cationic dyes, and the adsorption process for Methylene Blue was described by the Freundlich model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 14 mg/g. For the case of Rhodomine C, the adsorption isotherm has a polymolecular character with a maximum adsorption capacity of 34 mg/g. To realize the targeted destruction of the carcinoma cells, the Fe₃O₄@C nanoparticles were functionalized with aptamers, and an experiment on the Ehrlich ascetic carcinoma cells' destruction was carried out successively using a low-frequency alternating magnetic field. The number of cells destroyed as a result of their interaction with Fe₃O₄@C nanoparticles in an alternating magnetic field was 27%, compared with the number of naturally dead control cells of 6%.

Coconut husk-raw clay-Fe composite: preparation, characteristics and mechanisms of Congo red adsorption

The release of unspent dyes from industries constitutes hazard and environmental challenges. For rapid and efficient removal of Congo red from aqueous solutions, a composite was prepared from coconut husk, raw clay, Fe(II) and Fe(II) compounds. Adsorption variables (initial pH of the solution, contact time, temperature and initial concentration of Congo red) were varied to understand the characteristics and mechanisms of the adsorption process. The composite was characterised using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)–Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherm, X-ray Diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy and pH of the point zero charge (pH_pzc). The optimal values of the pH, equilibrium time and temperature for adsorption of Congo red by the composite are 2, 40 min and 50 °C, respectively. The kinetic and equilibrium data followed Avrami fractional order and Langmuir models, respectively. A 1.0 g of the composite could maximally take up 1649.3 mg of Congo red at 50 °C. The values of ΔG° are in the range of − 27.901 to − 24.492 kJ mol^–1 while the value of ΔH° is − 72.239 kJ mol^–1. Hence, the removal of the Congo red by the composite was spontaneous, feasible and exothermic. The adsorption process was biphasic and followed physisorption process. Electrostatic interaction played a significant role in the removal of Congo red by the composite. The combine data in this study have proven that the clay composite, a cheap adsorbent, can be used for remediation of water contaminated with Congo red.

Dynamics and thermodynamics for competitive adsorptive removal of methylene blue and rhodamine B from binary aqueous solution onto durian rind

Concurrent adsorptive removal of methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB) onto durian rind (DR) agricultural waste, from an aqueous binary solution as a model of wastewater containing multiple synthetic dyes, was investigated. The concurrent adsorption of the dyes followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption isotherm was well simulated by the Langmuir model, implying a monolayer adsorption to the surface with a homogeneous binding energy. The adsorption process was governed by external mass transfer through two-step intraparticle diffusion of the dyes onto the adsorbent surface. The adsorption efficiency of MB (96.4%) is much higher than that of RhB (56.3%). This is attributed to the higher rate constant for the adsorption of MB (0.348 g mg^-1 min^-1) as compared to that of RhB (0.151 g mg^-1 min^-1). The adsorption behavior suggested that the two cationic dyes in the binary solution diffused and adsorbed independently and randomly onto the DR surface. The adsorption capacity of MB and RhB in the binary solution (47.4 mg g^-1 and 32.9 mg g^-1, respectively) is lower than those of their single solute solutions (93.3 mg g^-1 and 62.8 mg g^-1, respectively), suggesting a competitive effect in their concurrent adsorption. This was confirmed based on the adsorption characteristics of the binary solution with different molar ratios. The competitive effect was attributed to either non-interactive or repulsive electrostatic interactions between the positively charged dyes in the binary system. The domination of MB is attributed to its smaller molecular size, higher planarity, and faster adsorption kinetics compared with RhB.

Graphene oxide incorporated chitosan/acrylamide/itaconic acid semi-interpenetrating network hydrogel bio-adsorbents for highly efficient and selective removal of cationic dyes

In recent years, polymeric bio-adsorbents offers high removal efficiency, superior adsorption capacity and selectivity against various pollutants in aqueous medium. While designing these adsorbents, their environmental friendliness, sustainability, renewability, easy accessibility, and cost-effectiveness should be considered. In this study, GO incorporated semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) nanocomposite hydrogels (CS/AAm/IA/GO) were obtained by free radical copolymerization of acrylamide (AAm) and itaconic acid (IA) in the presence of chitosan (CS) as an environmentally friendly bio-adsorbent. GO significantly improved the thermal stability, compressive strength, and percentage swelling of the hydrogel. The selective adsorption studies demonstrated that methylene blue (MB) was the most efficiently removed dye from both individual and mixed dye systems with 99.8 % removal efficiency. The adsorption capacity was found to be 247.47 mg g^-1 using 0.025 g hydrogel adsorbent containing 0.5 wt% of GO and an initial MB concentration of 5 mg L^-1 at pH 8 over 90 min at room temperature. The kinetic and isotherm studies revealed that the adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic studies suggested the spontaneous and endothermic nature of MB adsorption. Also, the MB removal efficiency above 96 % was obtained after 7 consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles while maintaining the structural stability of the bio-adsorbent.

Antimicrobial Activity of a Titanium Dioxide Additivated Thermoset

The transmission of pathogens via surfaces poses a major health problem, particularly in hospital environments. Antimicrobial surfaces can interrupt the path of spread, while photocatalytically active titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles have emerged as an additive for creating antimicrobial materials. Irradiation of such particles with ultraviolet (UV) light leads to the formation of reactive oxygen species that can inactivate bacteria. The aim of this research was to incorporate TiO2 nanoparticles into a cellulose-reinforced melamine-formaldehyde resin (MF) to obtain a photocatalytic antimicrobial thermoset, to be used, for example, for device enclosures or tableware. To this end, composites of MF with 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt% TiO2 were produced by ultrasonication and hot pressing. The incorporation of TiO2 resulted in a small decrease in tensile strength and little to no decrease in Shore D hardness, but a statistically significant decrease in the water contact angle. After 48 h of UV irradiation, a statistically significant decrease in tensile strength for samples with 0 and 10 wt% TiO2 was measured but with no statistically significant differences in Shore D hardness, although a statistically significant increase in surface hydrophilicity was measured. Accelerated methylene blue (MB) degradation was measured during a further 2.5 h of UV irradiation and MB concentrations of 12% or less could be achieved. Samples containing 0, 10, and 20 wt% TiO2 were investigated for long-term UV stability and antimicrobial activity. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy revealed no changes in the chemical structure of the polymer, due to the incorporation of TiO2, but changes were detected after 500 h of irradiation, indicating material degradation. Specimens pre-irradiated with UV for 48 h showed a total reduction in Escherichia coli when exposed to UV irradiation.

Graphene-substrate fabricated oxides and zinc oxide catalysts for the degradation of the methylene blue in the industrial wastewater

The release of unsafe color dyes into various industrial effluents can harm the environment and human health and therefore needs remediation. The current research assesses the environmental friendly photo-less catalytic performance of zinc oxide/reduced graphene oxide (ZnO/RGO) nanocomposites, prepared via green synthetic route, for the degradation, and decontamination of methylene blue (MB) dye from industrial aqueous effluents and compared with that of zinc oxide (ZnO), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and reduced graphene oxide (RGO). The materials were characterized for surface morphology, functional groups, and crystallinity by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, respectively, showing that ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were well-formed on the RGO surface and were having uniform pore sizes and large surface area. The degradation pattern of MB from its 40, 60, 80, and 100 ppm solutions by employing the degradation materials were examined using UV–Visible spectral analysis. The pH before and after the degradation of the MB in all the sample solutions was noted and found to change slightly after the degradation of MB. The results demonstrate that the ZnO/RGO nanocomposites display a better catalytic degradation efficiency (99.57%) as compared to the other degradation materials with the order of efficiency as ZnO/RGO > RGO > H2O2 > ZnO which shows that the degradation efficiency of ZnO (∼14%) can be significantly improved while fabricating its nanocomposite with RGO (99.57%). These findings can be utilized on a large-scale decontamination of dyes from industrial wastes without the involvement of light i.e., photo-less degradation.

Adsorption Behavior and Dynamic Interactions of Anionic Acid Blue 25 on Agricultural Waste

In this study, adsorption characteristics of a negatively charged dye, Acid Blue 25 (AB25), on pomelo pith (PP) was studied by varying the adsorption parameters, with the aim of evaluating the adsorption mechanism and establishing the role of hydrogen bonding interactions of AB25 on agricultural wastes. The kinetics, intraparticle diffusion, mechanism, and thermodynamics of the AB25 adsorption were systematically evaluated and analyzed by pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, the Weber–Morris intraparticle and Boyd mass transfer models, the Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin–Radushkevich, and Temkin isotherm models, and the Van’t Hoff equation. It was found that AB25 adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, governed by a two-step pore-volume intraparticle diffusion of external mass transfer of AB25 onto the PP surface. The adsorption process occurred spontaneously. The adsorption mechanism could be explained by the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was estimated to be 26.9 mg g−1, which is comparable to many reported adsorbents derived from agricultural wastes. Changes in the vibrational spectra of the adsorbent before and after dye adsorption suggested that AB25 molecules are bound to the PP surface via electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions. The results demonstrated that the use of pomelo pith, similar to other agricultural wastes, would provide a basis to design a simple energy-saving, sustainable, and cost-effective approach to remove negatively charged synthetic dyes from wastewater.

Adsorption of Methylene Blue by Biosorption on Alkali-Treated Solanum incanum: Isotherms, Equilibrium and Mechanism

In this study, a new bio-adsorbent (NASIF) was successfully prepared via chemical activation of Solanum incanum (SI) with hydrogen peroxide and sodium hydroxide reagents as an inexpensive and effective adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous media. The morphology of the NASIF adsorbent surface and the nature of the potential MB interactions were examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrograph. FTIR results suggested that carboxyl, carbonyl, and hydroxyl groups were involved in MB adsorption on the NASIF surface. EDX analysis confirmed the successful increase of oxygen-containing functional groups during the chemical activation. The influence of important factors was studied using the batch method. The results revealed that the maximum removal efficiency was 98% at contact time: 120 min; pH: 6.5, adsorbent dose: 40 mg; and temperature-25 °C. Isothermal behavior was evaluated using three non-linear isotherm models, Langmuir, Freundlich, and D–R isotherm. MB adsorption onto NASIF adsorbent followed the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum monolayer capacity (mg/g) at 25 °C. Meanwhile, the PSO kinetics model was found to be better than PFO kinetic model for describing the adsorption process using kinetic models. Based on the D–R model, the free energy (E, kJ mol−1) values were in the range of 0.090–0.1812 kJ mol−1, which indicated that the MB adsorption onto NASIF may belong to physical adsorption. The adsorption mechanism of MB onto NASIF adsorbent mainly includes electrostatic attraction, π-π interaction, n-π interaction, and H-bonding. The thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption process was a feasibility, spontaneous and exothermic process. Finally, the result of the present work could provide strong evidence of the potential of NASIF adsorbent for eliminating MB from aqueous media.

A sorbent containing pH-responsive chelating residues of aspartic and maleic acids for mitigation of toxic metal ions, cationic, and anionic dyes

t-Butyl hydroperoxide-initiated cycloterpolymerization of diallylaminoaspartic acid hydrochloride [(CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCH2)2NH+CH(CO2H)CH2CO2H Cl-] (I), maleic acid (HO2CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCO2H) (II) and cross-linker tetraallylhexane-1,6-diamine dihydrochloride [(CH2[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCH2)2NH+(CH2)6NH+ (CH2CH[double bond, length as m-dash]CH2)2 2Cl-] (III) afforded a new pH-responsive resin (IV), loaded with four CO2H and a chelating motif of NH+⋯CO2 - in each repeating unit. The removal of cationic methylene blue (MB) (3000 ppm) at pH 7.25 and Pb(ii) (200 ppm) at pH 6 by IV at 298, 313, and 328 K followed second-order kinetics with E a of 33.4 and 40.7 kJ mol-1, respectively. Both MB and Pb(ii) were removed fast, accounting for 97.7% removal of MB within 15 min at 313 K and 94% of Pb(ii) removal within 1 min. The super-adsorbent resin gave respective q max values of 2609 mg g-1 and 873 mg g-1 for MB and Pb(ii). IV was also found to trap anionic dyes; it removed 91% Eriochrome Black T (EBT) from its 50 ppm solutions at pH 2. The resin was found to be effective in reducing priority metal contaminants (like Cr, Hg, Pb) in industrial wastewater to sub-ppb levels. The synthesis of the recyclable resin can be easily scaled up from inexpensive starting materials. The resin has been found to be better than many recently reported sorbents.

A hydrostable CuII coordination network prepared hydrothermally as a "turn-on" fluorescent sensor for S2- and a selective adsorbent for methylene blue

The effective monitoring of water pollution and further purification are pressing yet challenging issues for guaranteeing the health of human beings and the stabilization of ecological systems. For this purpose, the development of efficient sensing and adsorption materials as a result of supramolecular interactions, including coordination and H-bonding etc., have been attracting increasing attention. With the aid of a coordination-driven self-assembly strategy, a new nonporous 2D Cu^II coordination network, [Cu₂L(H₂O)₂]_n (donated as CuCP), based on H₄L, where H₄L = 4-(4-(3,5-di-carboxy-pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid, was afforded hydrothermally. Structural analysis indicated that CuCP featured a wrinkled network similar to the ancient Chinese folding screens and constructed by the fully deprotonated ligand L^4- with the coordination mode of bis(μ₂-η¹:η¹:η²) and penta-coordinated Cu²⁺, which could be further upgraded to a supramolecular 3D framework as a result of the synergism of multiple C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The hydrostability of CuCP could be maintained within a wide pH range from 2 to 12 as verified by PXRD determination, endowing it with potential environmental applications. Thanks to the combination of the soft Lewis acidity of Cu²⁺ and its large conjugated structure, CuCP could be used as a turn-on fluorescence sensor for S^2- and exhibited a different fluorescence response when Na₂S, (NH₄)₂S or H₂S were incorporated, even in actual water samples. The sensing mechanisms were disclosed in detail by the combination of experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, CuCP was shown to be a selective and recoverable adsorbent with a maximum adsorption capacity of 379 mg g^-1 in 60 minutes for methylene blue (MB). The adsorption mechanism could be a combination of π⋯π stacking, n⋯π interaction, aggregation effects and Soft and Hard Acid-Base theory (HSAB). The results presented herein open up new perspectives for Cu^II species in environmental applications.

Porous ZnCl2-Activated Carbon from Shaddock Peel: Methylene Blue Adsorption Behavior

It is of great interest and importance to resource utilization of waste biomass to produce porous carbon for environmental treatments. Pore structure and properties of the obtained carbon mainly relate to carbonization conditions and biomass types. In this work, a series of porous, biomass-activated carbons (AC) were prepared using shaddock peel, with ZnCl₂ as a pore-forming agent. The effect of carbonization temperature and the mass ratio between ZnCl₂ and shaddock peel were thoroughly investigated. The material composition, surface chemical properties, and surface structures of samples were carefully characterized. The specific surface area and adsorption capacity to methylene blue (MB) of adsorbents were changed with the carbonization temperature and the mass ratios between ZnCl₂ and shaddock peel; when the temperature was at 1000 °C and the mass ratio was equal to 2:1, the resulting adsorbent had the largest specific surface area of 2398.74 m²/g and average pore size of 3.04 nm, which showed the highest adsorption capacity to MB to be 869.57 mg/g. The adsorption processes of biomass AC adsorbent matched the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. This efficient and environmentally friendly biomass AC adsorbent from shaddock peel, activated by ZnCl₂, is a promising candidate for the treatment of water pollution.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of Biomass-Derived Magnetic Carbon Composites for Adsorption and Catalysis

The synthesis of magnetic iron-carbon composites (Fe/C) from waste avocado seeds via hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has been demonstrated for the first time. These materials are shown to be effective in adsorption and catalytic applications, with performances comparable to or higher than materials produced through conventional processing routes. Avocado seeds have been processed in high-temperature water (230 °C) at elevated pressure (30 bar at room temperature) in the presence of iron nitrate and iron sulfate, in a process mimicking natural coalification. Characterization of the synthesized material has been carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), magnetometry, and through surface area measurements. The supported iron particles are observed to be predominately magnetite, with an oxidized hematite surface region. The presence of iron catalyzes the formation of an extended, ordered polymeric structure in the avocado seed-derived carbon. The magnetic Fe/C has been demonstrated as an adsorbent for environmental wastewater treatment using methylene blue and indigo carmine. Kinetic analysis suggests that the adsorbates are chemisorbed, with the positive surface charge of Fe/C being preferential for indigo carmine adsorption (49 mg g-1). Additionally, Fe/C has been evaluated as a heterogeneous catalyst for the hydroalkoxylation of phenylacetylene with ethylene glycol to 2-benzyl-1,3-dioxolane. Product yields of 45% are obtained, with 100% regioselectivity to the formed isomer. The solid catalyst has the advantages of being prepared from a waste material and of easy removal after reaction via magnetic separation. These developments provide opportunities to produce carbon-based materials for a variety of high-value applications, potentially also including energy storage and biopharmaceuticals, from a wide range of lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks.
