Heterogeneous Rh and Rh/Ag bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts immobilized on chiral polymers

Thermo-responsive chiral micelles as recyclable organocatalyst for asymmetric Rauhut-Currier reaction in water

Developing eco-friendly chiral organocatalysts with the combined advantages of homogeneous catalysis and heterogeneous processes is greatly desired. In this work, a family of amphiphilic one-handed helical polyisocyanides bearing phosphine pendants is prepared, which self-assembles into well-defined chiral micelles in water and showed thermo-responsiveness with a cloud point of approximately 38.4 °C. The micelles with abundant phosphine moieties at the interior efficiently catalyze asymmetric cross Rauhut-Currier reaction in water. Various water-insoluble substrates are transferred to target products in high yield with excellent enantioselectivity. The yield and enantiomeric excess (ee) of the product generated in water are up to 90% and 96%, respectively. Meanwhile, the yields of the same R-C reaction catalyzed by the polymer itself in organic solvents is <16%, with an ee < 72%. The homogeneous reaction of the chiral micelles in water turns to heterogeneous at temperatures higher than the cloud point, and the catalyst precipitation facilitates product isolation and catalyst recovery. The polymer catalyst is recycled 10 times while maintaining activity and enantioselectivity.

Bimetallic Sites for Catalysis: From Binuclear Metal Sites to Bimetallic Nanoclusters and Nanoparticles

Heterogeneous bimetallic catalysts have broad applications in industrial processes, but achieving a fundamental understanding on the nature of the active sites in bimetallic catalysts at the atomic and molecular level is very challenging due to the structural complexity of the bimetallic catalysts. Comparing the structural features and the catalytic performances of different bimetallic entities will favor the formation of a unified understanding of the structure-reactivity relationships in heterogeneous bimetallic catalysts and thereby facilitate the upgrading of the current bimetallic catalysts. In this review, we will discuss the geometric and electronic structures of three representative types of bimetallic catalysts (bimetallic binuclear sites, bimetallic nanoclusters, and nanoparticles) and then summarize the synthesis methodologies and characterization techniques for different bimetallic entities, with emphasis on the recent progress made in the past decade. The catalytic applications of supported bimetallic binuclear sites, bimetallic nanoclusters, and nanoparticles for a series of important reactions are discussed. Finally, we will discuss the future research directions of catalysis based on supported bimetallic catalysts and, more generally, the prospective developments of heterogeneous catalysis in both fundamental research and practical applications.

(NHC-olefin)-nickel(0) nanoparticles as catalysts for the (Z)-selective semi-hydrogenation of alkynes and ynamides

Nickel(0) nanoparticles coordinated to NHC ligands bearing N-coordinated cinnamyl moieties were readily prepared by reduction of a [NiCpBr(NHC-cinnamyl)] complex with methyl magnesium bromide. The combination of a strong σ-donor NHC ligand with a π-coordinating appended cinnamyl moiety likely prevents nickel(0) nanoparticle aggregation to larger inactive species, and allows the effective and (Z)-selective semi-hydrogenation of alkynes and ynamides.

Chiral Diene Ligands in Asymmetric Catalysis

Asymmetric catalysis has emerged as a general and powerful approach for constructing chiral compounds in an enantioselective manner. Hence, developing novel chiral ligands and catalysts that can effectively induce asymmetry in reactions is crucial in modern chemical synthesis. Among such chiral ligands and catalysts, chiral dienes and their metal complexes have received increased attention, and a great progress has been made over the past two decades. This review provides comprehensive and critical information on the essential aspects of chiral diene ligands and their importance in asymmetric catalysis. The literature covered ranges from August 2003 (when the first effective chiral diene ligand for asymmetric catalysis was reported) to October 2021. This review is divided into two parts. In the first part, the chiral diene ligands are categorized according to their structures, and their preparation methods are summarized. In the second part, their applications in asymmetric transformations are presented according to the reaction types.

Chiral Rhodium Nanoparticle-Catalyzed Asymmetric Arylation Reactions

The development of heterogeneous catalyst systems for enantioselective reactions is an important subject in modern chemistry as they can be easily separated from products and potentially reused; this is particularly favorable in achieving a more sustainable society. Whereas numerous homogeneous chiral small molecule catalysts have been developed to date, there are only limited examples of heterogeneous ones that maintain high activity and have a long lifetime. On the other hand, metal nanoparticle catalysts have attracted much attention in organic chemistry due to their robustness and ease of deposition on solid supports. Given these advantages, metal nanoparticles modified with chiral ligands, defined as "chiral metal nanoparticles", would work efficiently in asymmetric catalysis. Although asymmetric hydrogenation catalyzed by chiral metal nanoparticles was pioneered in the late twentieth century, the application of chiral metal nanoparticle catalysis for asymmetric C-C bond-forming reactions that give a high level of enantioselectivity with wide substrate scope was very limited.This Account summarizes recent investigations that we have carried out in the field of chiral rhodium (Rh) nanoparticle catalysis for asymmetric arylation reactions. We initially utilized composites of polystyrene-based copolymers with cross-linking moieties and carbon black incarcerated Rh nanoparticle catalysts for the asymmetric 1,4-addition of arylboronic acids to enones. We found that chiral diene-modified heterogeneous Rh nanoparticles were effective in these reactions, with excellent enantioselectivities and without causing metal leaching, and that bimetallic Rh/Ag nanoparticle catalysts enhanced activity. The catalyst could be easily recovered and reused more than ten times, thus demonstrating the robustness of metal nanoparticle catalysts.We then developed a secondary amide-substituted chiral diene modifier designed as a bifunctional ligand that possesses a metal biding site and a NH group to activate a substrate through hydrogen bonding. This chiral diene was very effective for the Rh/Ag nanoparticle-catalyzed asymmetric arylation of various electron-deficient olefins, including enones, unsaturated esters, unsaturated amides and nitroolefins, and imines to afford the corresponding products in excellent yields and with outstanding enantioselectivities. The system was also applicable for the synthesis of intermediates of various useful compounds. Furthermore, the compatibility of chiral Rh nanoparticles with other catalysts was confirmed, enabling the development of tandem reaction systems and cooperative catalyst systems.The nature of the active species was investigated. Several characteristic features of the heterogeneous nanoparticle systems that were completely different from those of the corresponding homogeneous metal complex systems were found.

Thermoregulated Ionic Liquid-Stabilizing Ru/CoO Nanocomposites for Catalytic Hydrogenation

Catalytic hydrogenations represent fundamental processes and allow for atom-efficient and clean functional group transformations for the production of chemical intermediates and fine chemicals in chemical industry. Herein, the Ru/CoO nanocomposites have been constructed and applied as nanocatalysts for the hydrogenation of phenols and furfurals into the corresponding cyclohexanols and tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohols, respectively. The functionalized ionic liquid acted not only as a ligand for stabilizing the Ru/CoO nanocatalyst but also as a thermoregulated agent. The as-obtained nanocatalyst showed superior activity, and it could be conveniently recovered via the thermoregulating phase separation. In six recycle experiments, the catalysts maintained excellent performance. It was observed that the catalytic performance highly hinged on the molar ratio of Ru to Co in the nanocatalyst. The catalyst characterization was carried out by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, and UV-vis. Especially, the characterization by HRTEM and HAADF-STEM images of the nanocatalyst demonstrated that Ru(0) and Co(II) species were distributed uniformly and the Ru and Co(II) species were close to each other. However, Co(0) was generated and an electronic transfer from Co to Ru species could occur under the hydrogenation conditions. The ¹³C NMR characterization indicated further that Co(II) sites were mainly responsible for phenol adsorption. Meanwhile, the adjacent electron-rich Ru(0) sites can promote H₂ dissociation and favor for the sequential hydrogenation.
