Bottom-Up Then Top-Down Synthesis of Gold Nanostructures Using Mesoporous Silica-Coated Gold Nanorods

Gold nanostructures were synthesized by etching away gold from heat-treated mesoporous silica-coated gold nanorods (AuNR@mSiO2), providing an example of top-down modification of nanostructures made using bottom-up methodology. Twelve different types of nanostructures were made using this bottom-up-then-top-down synthesis (BUTTONS), of which the etching of the same starting nanomaterial of AuNR@mSiO2 was found to be controlled by how AuNR@mSiO2 were heat treated, the etchant concentration, and etching time. When the heat treatment occurred in smooth moving solutions in round-bottomed flasks, red-shifted longitudinal surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) was observed, on the order of 10-30 min, indicating increased aspect ratios of the gold nanostructures inside the mesoporous silica shells. When the heat treatment occurred in turbulent solutions in scintillation vials, a blue shift of the LSPR was obtained within a few minutes or less, resulting from reduced aspect ratios of the rods in the shells. The influence of the shape of the glassware, which may impact the flow patterns of the solution, on the heat treatment was investigated. One possible explanation is that the flow patterns affect the location of opened pores in the mesoporous shells, with the smooth flow of solution mainly removing CTAB surfactants from the pores along the cylindrical body of mSiO2, therefore increasing the aspect ratios after etching, and the turbulent solutions removing more surfactants from the pores of the two ends or tips of the silica shells, hence decreasing the aspect ratios after etching. These new stable gold nanostructures in silica shells, bare and without surfactant protection, may possess unique chemical properties and capabilities. Catalysis using heat-treated nanomaterials was studied as an example of potential applications of these nanostructures.

Optimized plasmonic performances and derivate applications of Au nanobipyramids

Gold nanobipyramids (AuBPs) with narrow size distribution and high monodispersity have driven intensive attention because they display more advantageous plasmonic properties than gold nanorods (AuNRs). Applications of AuBPs based on tunable plasmonic properties and enhanced electromagnetic fields are being widely investigated in recent years. In this article, we focused on the preparation of well-defined AuBPs using the seed-mediated method, the plasmonic properties, and the exploration of AuBP-supported derivatives. The synergetic contributions of penta-twinned and appropriate growth environment could produce high-purity AuBPs. Systematic comparisons of plasmonic properties between AuBPs and AuNRs are illustrated. In addition, the well-defined AuBPs can be used as a template to synthesize multi-metallic nanostructures. The development of the epitaxial growth based on the AuBPs and corresponding applications are introduced. This study will provide a guide for the fabrication of composite nanostructures and advance their plasmonic applications.

Facile Synthesis of Porous Ag Crystals as SERS Sensor for Detection of Five Methamphetamine Analogs

Porous noble metal nanomaterials have attracted extensive attention due to their high specific surface area and surface plasmon resonance effect. However, it is difficult to form porous structures due to the high mobility and low reduction potential of noble metal precursors. In this article, we developed a facile method for preparing porous Ag with a controllable structure at room temperature. Two kinds of Ag crystals with different porous structures were successfully prepared by using AgCl cubes as sacrificial templates. Through the galvanic replacement reaction of Zn and AgCl, Ag crystals with a sponge-like porous structure were successfully prepared. Additionally, using NaBH₄ as the reducing agent, we prepared granular porous Ag cubes by optimizing the amount of reducing agent. Both the sponge-like and granular porous Ag cubes have clean and accessible surfaces. In addition, we used the prepared two porous Ag cubes as substrate materials for SERS detection of five kinds of methamphetamine analogs. The experimental results show that the enhancement effect of granular porous Ag is better than that of sponge-like porous Ag. Furthermore, we probed the hot spot distribution of granular porous Ag by Raman mapping. By using granular porous Ag as the substrate material, we have achieved trace detection of 5 kinds of methamphetamine analogs including Ephedrine, Amphetamine, N-Methyl-1-(benzofuran-5-yl)propan-2-amine (5-MAPB), N-Methyl-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)propan-2-amine (PMMA) and N-Methyl-1-(4-fluorophenyl)propan-2-amine (4-FMA). Furthermore, to achieve qualitative differentiation of analogs with similar structures we performed density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations on the Raman spectra of the above analogs. The DFT calculations provided the vibrational frequencies, Raman activities, and normal mode assignment for each analog, enabling the qualitative differentiation of the above analogs.

Synthesis of porous Au–Ag alloy nanorods with tunable plasmonic properties and intrinsic hotspots for surface-enhanced Raman scattering

The tunability of longitudinal plasmonic bands of P-AuAgNRs is realized to cover a wide range of wavelengths. P-AuAgNRs exhibit numerous internal hotspots which favor highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering detection.
