An inelastic neutron scattering, Raman, far-infrared, and molecular dynamics study of the intermolecular dynamics of two ionic liquids

Method for determining resin cure kinetics with low-frequency Raman spectroscopy

Characterizing resin extent of cure kinetics is critical to understanding the structure-property-processing relationships of polymers. The disorder band present in the low-frequency region of the Raman spectrum is directly related to conformational entropy and the modulus of amorphous materials, both of which change as the resin polymerizes. Normalizing the disorder band to its shoulder (∼85 cm-1) provides structural conversion kinetics, which we can directly correlate to chemical conversion kinetics for methacrylate and epoxy-amine based resin systems. In addition to fitting both the structural and chemical conversion data to a phenomenological kinetic rate equation, we also demonstrate a relationship between the chemical and structural kinetics which appears to relate to the softness of the material. Lastly, we use the method to investigate a methacrylate/epoxy interpenetrating polymer network resin system. We find that the structural and chemical conversions occur simultaneously during the formation of the primary (methacrylate) network, but there is a lag between the two during the formation of the secondary (epoxy-amine) network.

Molecular Insight into the Ionic Conduction of Quaternary Ammonium and Phosphonium Cation-Based Ionic Liquids Using Dielectric and Spectroscopy Analyses

We analyzed the primary properties of ionic liquids (ILs) comprising quaternary phosphonium cations and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) amide anions and compared them with those of corresponding quaternary-ammonium-cation-based ILs. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy was used to confirm the coupling between the translational and orientational motions of ions, and our results demonstrated that the high ionic conductivity of the phosphonium-based ILs was attributed to their fast rotational dynamics. The differences between ILs with different cations were further evaluated using vibrational (Raman and terahertz) spectroscopy. The Raman spectroscopy data revealed that the cation structure affected the conformation and flexibility (conformational change) of the anion. Furthermore, terahertz spectroscopy allowed us to evaluate the relationship between ion transport and intermolecular interactions between the cation and anion of ILs.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study of the Far-Infrared Spectrum of a Deep Eutectic Solvent

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are similar to ionic liquids (IL) in terms of physicochemical properties and technical uses. In ILs, far-infrared (FIR) spectroscopy has been utilized to reveal ionic interactions and even to produce a signature of the strengthening of the cation-anion hydrogen bond. However, for the situation of the DES, where the mixing of a salt and a molecular species makes the interplay between multiple intermolecular interactions even more complex, a full investigation of FIR spectra is still absent. In this work, the FIR spectrum of the DES, often referred to as ethaline, which is a 1:2 mixture of choline chloride and ethylene glycol, is calculated using classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and compared to experimental data. To explore the induced dipole effect on the computed FIR spectrum, MD simulations were run with both nonpolarizable and polarizable models. The calculation satisfactorily reproduces the position of the peak at ∼110 cm^-1 and the bandwidth seen in the experimental FIR spectrum of ethaline. The MD simulations show that the charge current is the most important contributor to the FIR spectrum, but the cross-correlation between the charge current and dipole reorientation also plays a role in the polarizable model. The dynamics of the chloride-ethylene glycol correlation span a wide frequency range, with a maximum at ∼150 cm^-1, but it participates as a direct mechanism only in the charge current-dipole reorientation cross-term. Anion correlations, whose dynamics are regulated via correlation with both ethylene glycol and choline, make the most significant contribution to the charge current mechanism. The MD simulations were also utilized to investigate the effect on the FIR spectrum of adding water to the DES and switching to a 1:1 composition.

How the cation size impacts on the relaxational and diffusional dynamics of supercooled butylammonium-based ionic liquids: DPEBA–TFSI versus BTMA–TFSI

Li-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide based ionic liquids with either butyl-trimethylammonium or N,N-dimethyl-N-(2-(propionyloxy)-ethyl)butan-1-ammonium as the anion were studied using proton and fluorine relaxometry as well as using field-gradient diffusometry to gain separate access to cation and anion dynamics in these compounds. The transport parameters obtained for these ionic liquids are compared with the estimates based on the conductivity data from literature and from the present work. The impact of cation size on correlation effects, the latter parameterized in terms of various Haven ratios, is mapped out.

Spectroscopic Signatures of Hydrogen-Bonding Motifs in Protonic Ionic Liquid Systems: Insights from Diethylammonium Nitrate in the Solid State

Diethylammonium nitrate, [N0 0 2 2][NO3], and its perdeuterated analogue, [N D D 2 2] [NO3], were structurally characterized and studied by infrared, Raman, and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectroscopy. Using these experimental data along with state-of-the-art computational materials modeling, we report unambiguous spectroscopic signatures of hydrogen-bonding interactions between the two counterions. An exhaustive assignment of the spectral features observed with each technique has been provided, and a number of distinct modes related to NH···O dynamics have been identified. We put a particular emphasis on a detailed interpretation of the high-resolution, broadband INS experiments. In particular, the INS data highlight the importance of conformational degrees of freedom within the alkyl chains, a ubiquitous feature of ionic liquid (IL) systems. These findings also enable an in-depth physicochemical understanding of protonic IL systems, a first and necessary step to the tailoring of hydrogen-bonding networks in this important class of materials.
