Perfect cubic metallo-borospherenes TM8B6 (TM = Ni, Pd, Pt) as superatoms following the 18-electron rule

Transition-metal (TM)-doped metallo-borospherenes exhibit unique structures and bonding in chemistry which have received considerable attention in recent years. Based on extensive global minimum searches and first-principles theory calculations, we predict herein the first and smallest perfect cubic metallo-borospherenes Oh TM8B6 (TM = Ni (1), Pd (2), Pt (3)) and Oh Ni8B6- (1-) which contain eight equivalent TM atoms at the vertexes of a cube and six quasi-planar tetra-coordinate face-capping boron atoms on the surface. Detailed canonical molecular orbital and adaptive natural density partitioning bonding analyses indicate that Oh TM8B6 (1/2/3) as superatoms possess nine completely delocalized 14c-2e bonds following the 18-electron principle (1S21P61D10), rendering spherical aromaticity and extra stability to the complex systems. Furthermore, Ni8B6 (1) can be used as building blocks to form the three-dimensional metallic binary crystal NiB (4) (Pm3̄m) in a bottom-up approach which possesses a typical CsCl-type structure with an octa-coordinate B atom located exactly at the center of the cubic unit cell. The IR, Raman, UV-vis and photoelectron spectra of the concerned clusters are computationally simulated to facilitate their experimental characterization.

Bimetallic niobium-doped aluminum clusters, NbAl_n^-/0 (n = 3-12), are investigated through a synergetic combination of size-selected anion photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculations. It is found that the dominant structures of NbAl_n^- anions with n = 3-8 can be described by gradually adding Al atoms to the NbAl₃^- core. Starting from n = 9, the lowest-energy geometric structures of NbAl_9-12^- transform into bilayer structures. In particular, NbAl₁₂^- has a C_3v symmetric structure, which can be viewed as a NbAl₆ regular hexagon over a bowl-shaped Al₆ structure. More detailed analyses indicate that NbAl₉ and NbAl₁₂^- possess unusual stability, which may be attributed to their closed-shell electron configurations with superatomic features.

Pentacoordinate Carbon Atoms in a Ferrocene Dication Derivative—[Fe(Si2-η5-C5H2)2]2+

Pentacoordinate carbon atoms are theoretically predicted here in a ferrocene dication derivative in the eclipsed-(1; C2v), gauche-(2; C2) and staggered-[Fe(Si2-η5-C5H2)2]2+(3; C2h) forms for the first time. Energetically, the relative energy gaps for 2 and 3 range from −3.06 to 16.74 and −2.78 to 40.34 kJ mol−1, respectively, when compared to the singlet electronic state of 1 at different levels. The planar tetracoordinate carbon (ptC) atom in the ligand Si2C5H2 becomes a pentacoordinate carbon upon complexation. The ligand with a ptC atom was predicted to be both a thermodynamically and kinetically stable molecule by some of us in our earlier theoretical works. Natural bond orbital and adaptive natural density partitioning analyses confirm the pentacoordinate nature of carbon in these three complexes (1–3). Although they are hypothetical at the moment, they support the idea of “hypercoordinate metallocenes” within organometallic chemistry. Moreover, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations carried out at 298 K temperature for 2000 fs suggest that these molecules are kinetically stable.

Boron Oxide B5O6− Cluster as a Boronyl-Based Inorganic Analog of Phenolate Anion

Boron oxide clusters have structural richness and exotic chemical bonding. We report a quantum chemical study on the binary B5O6− cluster, which is relatively oxygen-rich. A global structural search reveals planar C2v (1A1) geometry as the global minimum structure, featuring a heteroatomic hexagonal B3O3 ring as its core. The three unsaturated B sites are terminated by two boronyl (BO) groups and an O− ligand. The B5O6− cluster can be faithfully formulated as B3O3(BO)2O−. This structure is in stark contrast to that of its predecessors, Cs B5O5− and Td B5O4−, both of which have a tetrahedral B center. Thus, there exists a major structural transformation in B5On− series upon oxidation, indicating intriguing competition between tetrahedral and heterocyclic structures. The chemical bonding analyses show weak 6π aromaticity in the B5O6− cluster, rendering it a boronyl analog of phenolate anion (C6H5O−) or boronyl boroxine. The calculated vertical detachment energy of B5O6− cluster is 5.26 eV at PBE0, which greatly surpasses the electron affinities of halogens (Cl: 3.61 eV), suggesting that the cluster belongs to superhalogen anions.

Cubic aromaticity in ligand-stabilized doped Au superatoms

The magnetic response of valence electrons in doped gold-based M@Au₈L₈ ^q superatoms (M = Pd, Pt, Ag, Au, Cd, Hg, Ir, and Rh; L = PPh₃; and q = 0, +1, +2) is studied by calculating the gauge including magnetically induced currents (GIMIC) in the framework of the auxiliary density functional theory. The studied systems include 24 different combinations of the dopant, total cluster charge, and cluster structure (cubic-like or oblate). The magnetically induced currents (both diatropic and paratropic) are shown to be sensitive to the atomic structure of clusters, the number of superatomic electrons, and the chemical nature of the dopant metal. Among the cubic-like structures, the strongest aromaticity is observed in Pd- and Pt-doped M@Au₈L₈ ⁰ clusters. Interestingly, Pd- and Pt-doping increases the aromaticity as compared to a similar all-gold eight-electron system Au₉L₈ ⁺¹. With the recent implementation of the GIMIC in the deMon2k code, we investigated the aromaticity in the cubic and butterfly-like M@Au₈ core structures, doped with a single M atom from periods 5 and 6 of groups IX-XII. Surprisingly, the doping with Pd and Pt in the cubic structure increases the aromaticity compared to the pure Au case not only near the central atom but encompassing the whole metallic core, following the aromatic trend Pd > Pt > Au. These doped (Pd, Pt)@Au₈ nanoclusters show a closed shell 1S²1P⁶ superatom electronic structure corresponding to the cubic aromaticity rule 6n + 2.

Planar tetracoordinate carbon molecules with 14 valence electrons: examples of CBe4Mnn−2 (M = Li, Au; n = 1–3) clusters

Planar tetracoordinate carbon species are viable with 14 valence electrons, which violate the 18-electron rule. Chemical bonding around the C center is governed by double 2π/6σ aromaticity.
