A platinum promoted Ag/SBA-15 catalyst effective in selective oxidation of methanol - design and surface characterization

The Effect of Mesoporous Structure of the Support on the Oxidation of Dibenzothiophene

A source of Brønsted acid centers, generated on the surface of two mesoporous silica supports of different structures (SBA-15 and MCF), was 3-(trihydroxysilyl)-1-propanesufonic acid (TPS). The materials obtained were characterized and applied as catalysts for the oxidative desulfurization of dibenzothiophene (DBT) with hydrogen peroxide as a model ODS (oxidative desulfurization) process. The properties of the materials were examined via nitrogen physisorption, XRD (X-ray Diffraction) and elemental analysis showing the preservation of the support structure after modification with organosilane species. Due to the aggregation of catalyst particles in the reaction mixture, the SBA-15 based catalyst was not very effective in DBT oxidation. Contrary, TPS/MCF catalyst exhibited a very good activity (almost total conversion of DBT after 1 h in optimized reaction conditions) and stability in dibenzothiophene oxidation in mild reaction conditions.

Composition-dependent chemical ordering predicted in Pt-Ag nanoalloys

Pt-Ag nanoalloys display an astonishing chemical organization depending on their size and composition. Reversed size-dependent stabilization of ordered nanophases [J. Pirart et al., Nat. Commun., 2019, 10, 1982-1989] has recently been shown around equiconcentration. We extend this study by a theoretical investigation on the whole range of compositions showing a significant composition-dependent chemical ordering in Pt-Ag nanoalloys. At a low silver content, the surface exhibits a strong Ag segregation coupled to a (2 × 1) superstructure on the (100) facets. By increasing the silver concentration, the system displays an L1₁ ordered phase in the core, interrupted in a narrow range of concentrations by a concentric multishell structure characterized by an alternation of Ag-pure/Pt-pure concentric layers starting from the surface shell to the core. Although the L1₁ ordered phase has been observed experimentally, the concentric multishell structure is lacking due to the difficulty of the experimental characterization.

Mesoporous molecular sieve-based materials for catalytic oxidation of VOC: A review

As the main contributor of the formation of particulate matter as well as ozone, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) greatly affect human health and the environmental quality. Catalytic combustion/oxidation has been viewed as an efficient, economically feasible and environmentally friendly way for the elimination of VOCs. Supported metal catalyst is the preferred type of catalysts applied for VOCs catalytic combustion because of the synergy between active components and support as well as its flexibility in the composition. The presence of support not only plays the role of keeping the catalyst with good stability and mechanical strength, but also provides a large specific surface for the good dispersion of active components, which could effectively improve the performance of catalyst as well as decrease the usage of active components, especially the noble metal amount. Mesoporous molecular sieves, owing to their large surface area, unique porous structures, large pore size as well as uniform pore-size distribution, were viewed as superior support for dispersing active components. This review focuses on the recent development of mesoporous molecular sieve supported metal catalysts and their application in catalytic oxidation of VOCs. The effect of active component types, support structure, preparation method, precursors, etc. on the valence state, dispersion as well as the loading of active species were also discussed and summarized. Moreover, the corresponding conversion route of VOCs was also addressed. This review aims to provide some enlightment for designing the supported metal catalysts with superior activity and stability for VOCs removal.

The effect of the calcium dopant on the activity and selectivity of gold catalysts supported on SBA-15 and Nb-containing SBA-15 in methanol oxidation

Gold catalysts based on SBA-15, NbSBA-15 (Nb introduced in one pot synthesis) and Nb₂O₅/SBA-15 (prepared by impregnation of SBA-15) were doped with calcium species introduced before Au loading and were tested in gas-phase methanol oxidation.
