Thickness effect on VOC sensing properties of sprayed In2S3 films

Unveiling a growth temperature-dependent ultra-sensitive tetragonal scheelite BiVO4 thin film-based gas sensor for ammonia volatilization at room temperature

Ammonia (NH3) vapour is considered as a hazardous volatile, which has the potential to cause health concerns in humans. Exposure to NH3 can lead to potentially fatal, severe burn injuries to human eyes, can cause encephalopathy, and also affects various physiological systems, including the liver, the kidneys and the immune system. Due to these prime factors, the advancement of chemi-resistive ammonia gas sensors at room temperature has drawn considerable attention among researchers. In this current work, tetragonal scheelite (Ts)-BiVO4 thin films were deposited by varying the substrate (growth) temperature via the chemical spray pyrolysis method. The deposited thin films were subjected to structural, optical, morphological and gas sensing assessment. The gas sensing results indicate that the BV250 film has an ultra-high sensor response (I gas/I air = 900 for 75 ppm) towards ammonia vapour at room temperature. The pro-longevity of the sensor is outstanding (I gas/I air = 58.2 for 25 ppm) even after 50 days at room temperature. Furthermore, it demonstrates excellent selectivity, rapid response time (190 ± 4 s)/recovery time (16 ± 5 s) and repeatability (up to 4 cycles), and performs well in relatively humid conditions. This study offers insights into Ts-BiVO4 thin films as a sensing layer in a chemi-resistive gas sensor for ammonia detection at room temperature.

Isopropanol sensor based on sprayed In2S3 thin film using linear discriminant analysis for real-time selectivity

Metal sulfides have been studied for their high performance as new sensitive materials for gas detection. These material innovations contribute significantly to the development of more sensitive, stable and specific conductivity sensors, opening the way to new applications in detecting gases at low concentrations. Hence, this work reports on the sensing performance of In2S3 for isopropanol detection. Numerous VOCs, such as ketones, alcohols, and aldehydes, serve as cancer biomarkers. Notably, isopropanol, as a biomarker, shows a substantial increase (20-1007 ppb) in lung cancer patients, suggesting its potential as an early diagnostic criterion. To explore this, we fabricated a thin film of In2S3 onto a platinum interdigitated silicon dioxide substrate by simple and low-cost spray pyrolysis technology. Structural and morphological analyses via XRD, MEB, AFM, and TEM were conducted on the prepared samples. Isopropanol vapor response was assessed within a controlled temperature range of 250 °C-450 °C. The In2S3-based sensor demonstrated notable sensitivity (0.034 ppm-1), maintained stability over three weeks, and reliably detected isopropanol activation. In2S3 emerges as a promising candidate for detecting isopropanol, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 162 ppb. In this work, seven VOCs, including isopropanol, ethanol, methanol, butan-1-ol, formaldehyde, toluene, and acetone, were evaluated. Cross-responses among these VOCs were observed, indicating a lack of assured sensor selectivity. However, isopropanol recognition was achieved by employing linear discriminant analysis (LDA) on pertinent features derived from transient current change measurements. As a result, the sensor's sensitivity enables the deduction of the isopropanol concentration.

Effective Reinforcement of Visible Light Photocatalytic and Gas Sensing Characteristics of Nanocrystalline TiO2: Gd-Based Nb and Mo Dopants

Efficient compositions for the selective detection of ethanol gas and the removal of organic contaminants were realized by codoping of (Gd, Nb) and (Gd, Mo) ions into TiO2. TiO2, Ti0.96Gd0.01Nb0.03O2, and Ti0.96Gd0.01Mo0.03O2 samples were prepared by a coprecipitation method. For all compositions, a crystalline anatase phase of TiO2 was detected. Compared to pure TiO2, the absorption edges of Ti0.96Gd0.01Nb0.03O2 and Ti0.96Gd0.01Mo0.03O2 samples were red-shifted, further broadening towards visible light. The morphological studies demonstrate that the grains of TiO2 were more refined after (Gd, Nb) and (Gd, Mo) codoping. The photocatalytic efficiency of the Ti0.96Gd0.01Mo0.03O2 catalyst for degrading 20 mg/L reactive yellow 145, brilliant green, and amoxicillin was 98, 95, and 93% in 90 min, respectively. The reusability experiments indicate that the Ti0.96Gd0.01Mo0.03O2 catalyst had high stability during reuse. The high photocatalytic activity of the Ti0.96Gd0.01Mo0.03O2 catalyst was correlated to the broad visible-light absorption and effective separation of electron-hole pairs by Gd3+ and Mo6+ cations. The gas sensing characteristic is reflected by the high sensitivity of the Ti0.96Gd0.01Nb0.03O2 sensor to ethanol gas in the presence of different gases at 275 °C. The obtained results indicated that the (Gd, Mo) mixture could more effectively induce the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 while (Gd, Nb) dopants were the best for reinforcing its sensing characteristics.

Unique Photoactivated Time-Resolved Response in 2D GeS for Selective Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) sensors have a broad range of applications including healthcare, process control, and air quality analysis. There are a variety of techniques for detecting VOCs such as optical, acoustic, electrochemical, and chemiresistive sensors. However, existing commercial VOC detectors have drawbacks such as high cost, large size, or lack of selectivity. Herein, a new sensing mechanism is demonstrated based on surface interactions between VOC and UV-excited 2D germanium sulfide (GeS), which provides an effective solution to distinguish VOCs. The GeS sensor shows a unique time-resolved electrical response to different VOC species, facilitating identification and qualitative measurement of VOCs. Moreover, machine learning is utilized to distinguish VOC species from their dynamic response via visualization with high accuracy. The proposed approach demonstrates the potential of 2D GeS as a promising candidate for selective miniature VOCs sensors in critical applications such as non-invasive diagnosis of diseases and health monitoring.
