Electronic and structural characterisation of polycrystalline platinum disulfide thin films

2D-3D heterostructure of PtS2-x/Ga2O3and their band alignment studies for high performance and broadband photodetector

For deep ultraviolet (UV-C) photodetectors, gallium oxide (Ga2O3) is a suitable candidate owing to its intrinsic ultra-wide band gap and high stability. However, its detection is limited within the UV-C region, which restricts it to cover a broad range, especially in visible and near-infrared (NIR) region. Therefore, constructing a heterostructure of Ga2O3with an appropriate material having a narrow band gap is a worthwhile approach to compensate for it. In this category, PtS2group-10 transitional metal dichalcogenide stands at the top owing to its narrow band gap (0.25-1.65 eV), high mobility, and stability for heterostructure synthesis. Moreover, heterostructure with Ga2O3sensing in UV and PtS2broad response in visible and IR range can broaden the spectrum from UV to NIR and to build broadband photodetector. In this work, we fabricated a 2D-3D PtS2-x/Ga2O3heterostructure based broadband photodetector with detection from UV-C to NIR region. In addition, the PtS2-x/Ga2O3device shows a high responsivity of 38.7 AW-1and detectivity of 4.8 × 1013Jones under 1100 nm light illumination at 5 V bias. A fast response of 90 ms/86 ms illustrates the device's fast speed. An interface study between the PtS2-xand Ga2O3was conducted using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) which confirmed type-I band alignment. Finally, based on their band alignment study, a carrier transport mechanism was proposed at the interface. This work offers a new opportunity to fabricate large-area high-performance 2D-3D heterostructures based photodetectors for future optoelectronics devices.

Synthesis of 2D PtSe2 Nanolayers on Glass Substrates and Their Integration in Near-Infrared Light Shutters

PtSe2 has asserted its key role among the emerging 2D transition metal dichalcogenides, however, its simplified growth process with controlled number of layers, high crystalline quality, and on inexpensive substrates is still challenging. Here, we report the synthesis details of PtSe2 layers on soda lime glass substrates by selenization of predeposited Pt layers using the thermally assisted conversion method at atmospheric pressure. PtSe2 syntheses are confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman analysis. The layers were further investigated with transmission electron microscopy and optical ellipsometry, revealing the thickness and its dependence on the metal precursor sputtering time. Finally, the integration of PtSe2 as transparent conductive layers in polymer-dispersed liquid crystal structures operating as near-infrared light shutters is demonstrated and device performance is discussed. The proposed simple and inexpensive synthesis approach opens up new directions toward PtSe2 potential technological applications, including ITO-free optoelectronics.

Surface Modification and Subsequent Fermi Density Enhancement of Bi(111)

Defects introduced to the surface of Bi(111) break the translational symmetry and modify the surface states locally. We present a theoretical and experimental study of the 2D defects on the surface of Bi(111) and the states that they induce. Bi crystals cleaved in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) at low temperature (110 K) and the resulting ion-etched surface are investigated by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) as well as spectroscopy (STS) techniques in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. STS measurements of cleaved Bi(111) reveal that a commonly observed bilayer step edge has a lower density of states (DOS) around the Fermi level as compared to the atomic-flat terrace. Following ion bombardment, the Bi(111) surface reveals anomalous behavior at both 110 and 300 K: Surface periodicity is observed by LEED, and a significant increase in the number of bilayer step edges and energetically unfavorable monolayer steps is observed by STM. It is suggested that the newly exposed monolayer steps and the type A bilayer step edges result in an increase to the surface Fermi density as evidenced by UPS measurements and the Kohn-Sham DOS. These states appear to be thermodynamically stable under UHV conditions.
