Trends in trigonal prismatic Ln-[1]ferrocenophane complexes and discovery of a Ho3+ single-molecule magnet

Building Molecular Nanomagnets by Encapsulating Lanthanide Ions in Boron Nitride Nanotubes: Ab Initio Investigation

Lanthanide-based single-ion magnets have attracted much interest due to their great potential for information storage at the level of one molecule. Among various strategies to enhance magnetization blocking in such complexes, the synthesis of axially symmetric compounds is regarded as the most promising. Here, we investigate theoretically the magnetization blocking of several lanthanide ions (Tb3+, Dy3+, Ho3+, Er3+, and Tm3+) encapsulated in highly symmetric zigzag boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) of different diameters with ab initio methodology. We found that Tb3+@(7,0)BNNT, Dy3+@(7,0)BNNT, and Tm3+@(5,0)BNNT are suitable SIM candidates, while the other investigated complexes from this series show no signs of magnetization blocking owing to a hard competition between contributions to the crystal field of the lanthanide ion from neighboring and more distant atoms of the nanotube.

Single-ion magnet behavior of Ln3+ encapsulated in carbon nanotubes: an ab initio insight

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have attracted large interest owing to their capability to store information at the level of a single molecule, which has great potential for applications in information technology. The key characteristic required for SMM performance is the magnetization blocking barrier, and in the last decade, impressive efforts have been made to increase its height. Herein, we report an ab initio investigation of the SMM behavior of a series of lanthanide ions (Tb3+, Dy3+, Ho3+, Er3+, Tm3+ and Yb3+) encapsulated in zigzag carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of different diameters. The results show that despite the high symmetry of the Ln environment, none of the investigated systems, except for Er3+ encapsulated in the (7,0) CNT, exhibited any blocking behavior. This is mainly attributed to the strong competition between axial and equatorial contributions to the crystal field of these encapsulated ions, resulting in weak or lack of magnetic axiality. The presented results provide useful theoretical guidance for the design of high-performance SMMs via modulating the crystal field of the ligand environment.

A Combined Synthetic, Magnetic, and Theoretical Study on Enhancing Ligand-Field Axiality for Dy(III) Single-Molecule Magnets Supported by Ferrocene Diamide Ligands

Molecular design is crucial for improving the performance of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). For dysprosium(III) SMMs, enhancing ligand-field axiality is a well-suited strategy to achieve high-performance SMMs. We synthesized a series of dysprosium(III) complexes, (NN^TIPS)DyBr(THF)₂ (1, NN^TIPS = fc(NSiⁱPr₃)₂; fc = 1,1'-ferrocenediyl, THF = tetrahydrofuran), [(NN^TIPS)Dy(THF)₃][BPh₄] (2), (NN^TIPS)DyI(THF)₂ (3), and [(NN^TBS)Dy(THF)₃][BPh₄] (4, NN^TBS = fc(NSi^tBuMe₂)₂), supported by ferrocene diamide ligands. X-ray crystallography shows that the rigid ferrocene backbone enforces a nearly axial ligand field with weakly coordinating equatorial ligands. Dysprosium(III) complexes 1-4 all exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under zero fields and possess high effective barriers (U_eff) around 1000 K, comparable to previously reported (NN^TBS)DyI(THF)₂ (5). We probed the influences of structural variations on SMM behaviors by theoretical calculations and found that the distribution of negative charges defined by r_q, i.e., the ratio of the charges on the axial ligands to the charges on the equatorial ligands, plays a decisive role. Moreover, theoretical calculations on a series of model complexes 1'-5' without equatorial ligands unveil that the axial crystal-field parameters B₂⁰ are directly proportional to the N-Dy-N angles and support the hypothesis that enhancing the ligand-field axiality could improve SMM performance.

Tuning the optical and magnetic properties of lanthanide single-ion magnets using nitro-functionalized trispyrazolylborate ligands

We report the synthesis, crystal structures, photophysical and magnetic properties of 11 novel lanthanide complexes with the asymmetrically functionalized trispyrazolylborate ligand 4-nitrotrispyrazolylborate, 4-NO₂Tp^-: [Ln(4-NO₂Tp)₃] (Ln = La-Dy, except Pm). In-depth photophysical characterization of the ligands via luminescence, reflectance and absorption spectroscopic techniques, decay lifetimes, quantum yields supported by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and natural bond order (NBO) analysis reveal that n-NO₂Tp^- ligands are dominated by intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT) transitions and that second-sphere interactions are critical to the stabilization of the T₁ state of n-NO₂Tp^- ligands and hence their ability to sensitize Ln³⁺ emission. The luminescence properties of the complexes indicate that 4-NO₂Tp^- is a poor sensitizer of Ln³⁺ emission, unlike 3-NO₂Tp^-. Moreover, [Nd(4-NO₂Tp)₃] (crystallized as a hexane solvate) displays single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties, with longer relaxation times and larger barrier than the non-functionalized [NdTp₃], attributed to the addition of the NO₂-group and subsequent rigidification of the molecular structure.

Trigonal Prismatic Coordination of Discrete Rare Earth Ions, Enforced by the Polyoxotungstate [P4 W27 O99 (H2 O)]16

A family of solution‐stable polyanions [Na⊂{Ln^III(H₂O)}{W^VIO(H₂O)}P^V₄W^VI₂₆O₉₈]¹²⁻ (Ln=Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and Y) represent the first examples of polyoxometalates comprising a single lanthanide(III) or yttrium(III) ion in a rare trigonal prismatic O₆ environment. Their synthesis exploits the reactivity of the organophosphonate‐functionalized precursor [P₄W₂₄O₉₂(C₆H₅P^VO)₂]¹⁶⁻ with heterometal ions and yields hydrated potassium or mixed lithium/potassium salts of composition K_xLn_yH_12–x–y[Na⊂{Ln(H₂O)}{WO(H₂O)}P₄W₂₆O₉₈]⋅nH₂O⋅mLiCl (x=8.5–11; y=0–2; n=24–34; m=0–1.5). The Dy, Ho, Er and Yb derivatives are characterized by slow magnetization relaxation.

Magnetic anisotropy in YbIII complex candidates for molecular qubits: a theoretical analysis

The magnetic properties of mononuclear YbIII complexes have been explored by using multiconfigurational CASPT2/RASSI calculations. Such complexes, in particular the case of [Yb(trensal)] complex, have been proposed as molecular qubits due to their spin dynamics properties. We have verified the accuracy of the theoretical approach to study such systems by comparing with experimental magnetic data. In order to have a wide overview of the magnetic properties of mononuclear YbIII complexes, we have considered simple charged and neutral models, [Yb(H2O)n]3+ and [Yb(OH)3(H2O)n-3], for many coordination modes. Thus, the results for more than 100 models allow extraction of some conclusions about the best ligand distributions in the coordination sphere to tailor the magnetic properties. Some low coordination, between 3 and 5, complexes that have no experimental magnetic data have been studied computationally to check if they can present high magnetic anisotropy.

Holmium(iii) molecular nanomagnets for optical thermometry exploring the luminescence re-absorption effect

Coordination complexes of lanthanide(3+) ions can combine Single-Molecule Magnetism (SMM) with thermally modulated luminescence applicable in optical thermometry. We report an innovative approach towards high performance SMM-based optical thermometers which explores tunable anisotropy and the luminescence re-absorption effect of Ho^III complexes. Our concept is shown in dinuclear cyanido-bridged molecules, {[Ho^III(4-pyridone)₄(H₂O)₂][M^III(CN)₆]}·nH₂O (M = Co, 1; Rh, 2; Ir, 3) and their magnetically diluted analogues, {[Ho^III _x Y^III _1-x (4-pyridone)₄(H₂O)₂][M^III(CN)₆]}·nH₂O (M = Co, x = 0.11, 1@Y; Rh, x = 0.12, 2@Y; Ir, x = 0.10, 3@Y). They are built of pentagonal bipyramidal Ho^III complexes revealing the zero-dc-field SMM effect. Experimental studies and the ab initio calculations indicate an Orbach magnetic relaxation with energy barriers varying from 89.8 to 86.7 and 78.7 cm^-1 K for 1, 2, and 3, respectively. 1-3 also differ in the strength of quantum tunnelling of magnetization which is suppressed by hyperfine interactions, and, further, by the magnetic dilution. The Y^III-based dilution governs the optical properties as 1-3 exhibit poor emission due to the dominant re-absorption from Ho^III while 1@Y-3@Y show room-temperature blue emission of 4-pyridone. Within ligand emission bands, the sharp re-absorption lines of the Ho^III electronic transitions were observed. Their strong thermal variation was used in achieving highly sensitive ratiometric optical thermometers whose good performance ranges, lying between 25 and 205 K, are adjustable by using hexacyanidometallates. This work shows that Ho^III complexes are great prerequisites for advanced opto-magnetic systems linking slow magnetic relaxation with unique optical thermometry exploiting a luminescence re-absorption phenomenon.

Blocking like it's hot: a synthetic chemists' path to high-temperature lanthanide single molecule magnets

Progress in the synthesis, design, and characterisation of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has expanded dramatically from curiosity driven beginnings to molecules that retain magnetization above the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. This is in no small part due to the increasingly collaborative nature of this research where synthetic targets are guided by theoretical design criteria. This article aims to summarize these efforts and progress from the perspective of a synthetic chemist with a focus on how chemistry can modulate physical properties. A simple overview is presented of lanthanide electronic structure in order to contextualize the synthetic advances that have led to drastic improvements in the performance of lanthanide-based SMMs from the early 2000s to the late 2010s.

Fulvalene as a platform for the synthesis of a dimetallic dysprosocenium single-molecule magnet

The dinucleating fulvalenyl ligand [1,1',3,3'-(C5 t Bu2H2)2]2- (Fvtttt) was used to synthesize the dimetallic dysprosocenium cation [{Dy(η5-Cp*)}2(μ-BH4)(η5:η5-Fvtttt)]+ (3) as the salt of [B(C6F5)4]- (Cp* = C5Me5). Compound [3][B(C6F5)4] was obtained using a method in which the double half-sandwich complex [{Dy(BH4)2(THF)}2(Fvtttt)] (1) was reacted with KCp* to give the double metallocene [{Dy(Cp*)(μ-BH4)}2(Fvtttt)] (2), followed by removal of a bridging borohydride ligand upon addition of [(Et3Si)2(μ-H)][B(C6F5)4]. The dimetallic fulvalenyl complexes 1-3 give rise to single-molecule magnet (SMM) behaviour in zero applied field, with the effective energy barriers of 154(15) cm-1, 252(4) cm-1 and 384(18) cm-1, respectively, revealing a significant improvement in performance across the series. The magnetic properties are interpreted with the aid of ab initio calculations, which show substantial increases in the axiality of the crystal field from 1 to 2 to 3 as a consequence of the increasingly dominant role of the Fvtttt and Cp* ligands, with the barrier height and hysteresis properties being attenuated by the equatorial borohydride ligands. The experimental and theoretical results described in this study furnish a blueprint for the design and synthesis of poly-cationic dysprosocenium SMMs with properties that may surpass those of benchmark systems.

Solvent-induced single-molecule magnet behavior and near-infrared luminescence properties of rare earth complexes

We demonstrate a route for designing and improving outstanding SMMs by means of a solvent-controlled crystallization.
