Oxidized sodium alginate/polyacrylamide hydrogels adhesive for promoting wheat growth

Chemical modification of sodium alginate (SA) polymer chains can increase its functional group species. Sodium periodate (SP) was usually used to oxidize the hydroxyl groups on the chain of SA to aldehyde groups, the preparation of oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) using SP is not only complicated, also limits the variety of functional groups on the chain of OSA. By contrast, we have developed an innovative strategy for OSA, in which ammonium persulfate (APS) was used to oxidize SA, providing a clear elucidation of the oxidizing process and mechanism. OSA/PAM hydrogels were synthesized using OSA, the hydrogels possess excellent adhesion properties to various non-metallic and metallic substrates. Tensile and compression tests show that the cross-linked OSA/PAM hydrogels have superior mechanical properties. We exploit OSA/PAM hydrogels as soil adhesive and water-retaining agents for wheat growth. OSA/PAM hydrogels significantly improve the survival time of wheat grown in brown loam soil under a water-shortage environment, and slow down the wilting of wheat in a water-shortage environment and prolong the survival time of wheat in sandy soils. Our trials should make hydrogels important for wheat cultivation in brown loam soils and the development of desert areas.

Mechanical Properties of Low-Molecular-Weight Peptide Hydrogels Improved by Thiol-Ene Click Chemistry

Low-molecular-weight peptide hydrogels can be formed by self-assembly through weak interactions, but the application of the hydrogel is influenced by its weak mechanical properties. Therefore, it is important to construct low-molecular-weight peptide hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties. In this work, we designed the pentapeptide molecule Fmoc-FFCKK-OH (abbreviated as FFCKK) with a sulfhydryl group, and another low-molecular-weight cross-linker N,N'-methylenebis(acrylamide) (MBA) was introduced to construct a hydrogel with excellent mechanical properties. The secondary structure change process of FFCKK and the assembly mechanism of hydrogel were analyzed using theoretical calculations and experimental characterizations. The occurrence of thiol-ene click chemistry provides covalent interaction in the hydrogel, and the synergistic effect ofcovalent interaction and hydrogen bonding improves the mechanical properties of the hydrogel by nearly 10-fold. The hydrogel was observed to be able to withstand a stress of 368 Pa and to break in a layer-by-layer manner by compression testing. The micromechanics of the hydrogels were characterized, and the excellent mechanical properties of the hydrogels were confirmed. The synergistic approach provides a new idea for the preparation of low-molecular-weight peptide hydrogels and facilitates the expansion of their potential applications in biomedical fields.

Bionic ordered structured hydrogels: structure types, design strategies, optimization mechanism of mechanical properties and applications

Natural organisms, such as lobsters, lotus, and humans, exhibit exceptional mechanical properties due to their ordered structures. However, traditional hydrogels have limitations in their mechanical and physical properties due to their disordered molecular structures when compared with natural organisms. Therefore, inspired by nature and the properties of hydrogels similar to those of biological soft tissues, researchers are increasingly focusing on how to investigate bionic ordered structured hydrogels and render them as bioengineering soft materials with unique mechanical properties. In this paper, we systematically introduce the various structure types, design strategies, and optimization mechanisms used to enhance the strength, toughness, and anti-fatigue properties of bionic ordered structured hydrogels in recent years. We further review the potential applications of bionic ordered structured hydrogels in various fields, including sensors, bioremediation materials, actuators, and impact-resistant materials. Finally, we summarize the challenges and future development prospects of bionic ordered structured hydrogels in preparation and applications.

Hydrogel-Based Bioelectronics and Their Applications in Health Monitoring

Flexible bioelectronics exhibit promising potential for health monitoring, owing to their soft and stretchable nature. However, the simultaneous improvement of mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and signal-to-noise ratio of these devices for health monitoring poses a significant challenge. Hydrogels, with their loose three-dimensional network structure that encapsulates massive amounts of water, are a potential solution. Through the incorporation of polymers or conductive fillers into the hydrogel and special preparation methods, hydrogels can achieve a unification of excellent properties such as mechanical properties, self-healing, adhesion, and biocompatibility, making them a hot material for health monitoring bioelectronics. Currently, hydrogel-based bioelectronics can be used to fabricate flexible bioelectronics for motion, bioelectric, and biomolecular acquisition for human health monitoring and further clinical applications. This review focuses on materials, devices, and applications for hydrogel-based bioelectronics. The main material properties and research advances of hydrogels for health monitoring bioelectronics are summarized firstly. Then, we provide a focused discussion on hydrogel-based bioelectronics for health monitoring, which are classified as skin-attachable, implantable, or semi-implantable depending on the depth of penetration and the location of the device. Finally, future challenges and opportunities of hydrogel-based bioelectronics for health monitoring are envisioned.

Injectable hydrogels of enzyme-catalyzed cross-linked tyramine-modified gelatin for drug delivery

Enzymatically catalyzed cross-linking is a hydrogel fabrication method that generally is considered to have lower cytotoxicity than traditional chemical cross-linking methods. In order to optimize the properties of injectable hydrogels and expand their applications, an enzyme-catalyzed cross-linked injectable hydrogel was designed. The tyramine-modified gelatin (G-T) was formed into a stable injectable hydrogel by the combination of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) catalysis. 1H NMR spectroscopy was used to demonstrate the successful modification of gelatin by tyramine. The surface morphology of the prepared hydrogels was characterized jointly by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Rheological tests demonstrated the tunable mechanical strength, formation kinetics, shear thinning and good self-recovery properties of the hydrogels. In addition, the hydrogels can be formed into various shapes by injection. The hydrogel network structure is complex and interlaced, as such it is suitable to encapsulate drugs for controlled release. The drug release from the prepared hydrogels followed the Peppas–Sahlin model and belonged to Fickian diffusion. This study constructed injectable hydrogels through the enzyme-catalyzed cross-linking of modified gelatin and applied the hydrogels for drug release, which is expected to expand the application in biomedical fields.

Preparation of Salt-Induced Ultra-Stretchable Nanocellulose Composite Hydrogel for Self-Powered Sensors

Hydrogels have attracted much attraction for promising flexible electronics due to the versatile tunability of the properties. However, there is still a big obstacle to balance between the multi-properties and performance of wearable electronics. Herein, we propose a salt-percolated nanocellulose composite hydrogel which was fabricated via radical polymerization with acrylic acid as polymer networks (NaCl-CNCs-PAA). CNCs were utilized as a reinforcing agent to enhance the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. Moreover, the abundant hydroxyl groups endow the hydrogel with noncovalent interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, and the robustness of the hydrogel was thus improved. NaCl incorporation induced the electrostatic interaction between CNCs and PAA polymer blocks, thus facilitating the improvement of the stretchability of the hydrogel. The as-obtained hydrogel exhibited excellent stretchability, ionic conductivity, mechanical robustness and anti-freezing properties, making it suitable for self-powered sensing applications. A single-mode triboelectric nanogenerator (C-TENG) was fabricated by utilizing the composite hydrogel as electrodes. This C-TENG could effectively convert biomechanical energy to electricity (89.2 V, 1.8 µA, 32.1 nC, and the max power density of 60.8 mW m^-2 at 1.5 Hz.) Moreover, the composite hydrogel was applied for strain sensing to detect human motions. The nanocellulose composite hydrogel can achieve the application as a power supply in integrated sensing systems and as a strain sensor for human motion detection.

Advances in Hemostatic Hydrogels That Can Adhere to Wet Surfaces

Currently, uncontrolled bleeding remains a serious problem in emergency, surgical and battlefield environments. Despite the specific properties of available hemostatic agents, sealants, and adhesives, effective hemostasis under wet and dynamic conditions remains a challenge. In recent years, polymeric hydrogels with excellent hemostatic properties have received much attention because of their adjustable mechanical properties, high porosity, and biocompatibility. In this review, to investigate the role of hydrogels in hemostasis, the mechanisms of hydrogel hemostasis and adhesion are firstly elucidated, the adhesion design strategies of hemostatic hydrogels in wet environments are briefly introduced, and then, based on a comprehensive literature review, the studies and in vivo applications of wet-adhesive hemostatic hydrogels in different environments are summarized, and the improvement directions of such hydrogels in future studies are proposed.

Recent Advances in Design Strategies of Tough Hydrogels

Hydrogels are a fascinating class of materials popular in numerous fields, including tissue engineering, drug delivery, soft robotics, and sensors, attributed to their 3D network porous structure containing a significant amount of water. However, traditional hydrogels exhibit poor mechanical strength, limiting their practical applications. Thus, many researchers have focused on the development of mechanically enhanced hydrogels. This review describes the design considerations for constructing tough hydrogels and some of the latest strategies in recent years. These tough hydrogels have an up-and-coming prospect and bring great hope to the fields of biomedicine and others. Protein-Based Hydrogels: Promising Materials for Tissue Engineering

The successful design of a hydrogel for tissue engineering requires a profound understanding of its constituents' structural and molecular properties, as well as the proper selection of components. If the engineered processes are in line with the procedures that natural materials undergo to achieve the best network structure necessary for the formation of the hydrogel with desired properties, the failure rate of tissue engineering projects will be significantly reduced. In this review, we examine the behavior of proteins as an essential and effective component of hydrogels, and describe the factors that can enhance the protein-based hydrogels' structure. Furthermore, we outline the fabrication route of protein-based hydrogels from protein microstructure and the selection of appropriate materials according to recent research to growth factors, crucial members of the protein family, and their delivery approaches. Finally, the unmet needs and current challenges in developing the ideal biomaterials for protein-based hydrogels are discussed, and emerging strategies in this area are highlighted.

Dually cross-linked single network poly(ionic liquid)/ionic liquid ionogels for a flexible strain-humidity bimodal sensor

Gel electrolytes have aroused extensive interest for diverse flexible electronics due to their high ionic conductivity and inherent stretchability. However, gel electrolytes still face challenges in terms of mechanical properties, fatigue resistance, and environmental adaptation, which severely limit the practical application of gel-based electronics. In this paper, we have synthesized a novel polymerizable ionic liquid [SBMA][AA] by mixing zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate with acrylic acid. Then a dually cross-linked single network poly(ionic liquid)/ionic liquid (DCSN PIL/IL) ionogel was prepared by a simple one-step photopolymerization of the [SBMA][AA] in another IL 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanoamide ([EmIm][DCA]). The synergistic effect between covalent crosslinking and dynamic physical crosslinking points endows the ionogel with good mechanical properties as well as outstanding fatigue resistance. Gratifyingly, the entrapment of [EmIm][DCA] in the ionogel matrix yields excellent environmental adaptability and high ionic conductivity. Meanwhile, the DCSN PIL/IL ionogel also exhibited strong adhesive capacity due to the abundance of carboxyl and sulphonic acid groups. The outstanding electromechanical properties make the DCSN PIL/IL ionogel a perfect candidate for strain sensors to monitor diverse human body activities, such as the movement of the thumb knuckle and handwriting. Interestingly, the DCSN PIL/IL ionogel also displayed high responsiveness to humidity. Therefore, it is believed that this DCSN PIL/IL ionogel offers a broad prospect in flexible strain-humidity bimodal sensors.

Peptide Hydrogel with Antibacterial Performance Induced by Rare Earth Metal Ions

Metal ion-induced peptide assembly is an interesting field. As compared to traditional antibacterial Ag⁺, rare earth metal ions possess the advantage of antibacterial performance with photostability and low toxicity. Herein, a new peptide Fmoc-FFWDD-OH was designed and synthesized, which could form a stable hydrogel induced by rare earth metal ions, including Tb³⁺, Eu³⁺, and La³⁺. The mechanical properties were characterized by rheological measurements, and they exhibited elasticity-dominating properties. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images showed a large number of nanoscale fiber structures formed in the hydrogel. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, ThT assays, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern illustrated the formation mechanism of the fiber structure. The rare earth ion-induced peptide hydrogel was proved to possess good antibacterial performance on Escherichia coli (E. coli) with excellent biocompatibility. The introduction of rare earth metal ions may have some potential applications in the biological antibacterial and medical fields.

Drosera-Inspired Dual-Actuating Double-Layer Hydrogel Actuator

Drosera is a small insectivorous plant whose antennae can fold up, encircle, and prey. The rapid movement of the antennae is achieved by the synergistic effect of a double-layer structure with the antennae contracts on the front and expands on the back. In this work, a drosera-inspired dual-actuating double-layer hydrogel actuator is proposed, in which the temperature-responsive poly(N, N-diethyl acrylamide) (PDEAAm) layer acts as the main actuation layer and a moisture-responsive poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) layer acts as the auxiliary actuation layer. In a water environment with low temperature, both the PAAm and PDEAAm layers absorb water and expand with a swelling property. When the temperature exceeds the lower critical solution temperature of PDEAAm, the PDEAAm layer undergoes a hydrophilic-hydrophobic transition and shrinks rapidly. Therefore, the synergistic effect of the double-layer hydrogel enables the double-layer hydrogel to achieve a large bending angle at high temperature. In addition, when designing and fabricating shape-patterned double-layer hydrogels, complex shape changes can be achieved. Due to the physical and chemical properties, the actuator can be used to grab, transport, and release objects. This drosera-inspired double-layer hydrogel actuator has high practical value, which may provide new insights for the design and manufacture of artificial intelligence materials.

Multiresponsive Cellulose Nanocrystal Cross-Linked Copolymer Hydrogels for the Controlled Release of Dyes and Drugs

Multiresponsive hydrogels have attracted tremendous interest due to their promising applications in tissue engineering, wearable devices, and flexible electronics. In this work, we report a multiresponsive upper critical solution temperature (UCST) composite hydrogel based on poly (acrylic acid-co-acrylamide), PAAc-co-PAAm, sequentially cross-linked by acid-hydrolysis cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations demonstrated that the hydrogels are formed by densely cross-linked porous structures. The PAAc/PAAm/CNC hybrid hydrogels exhibit swelling and shrinking properties that can be induced by multiple stimuli, including temperature, pH, and salt concentration. The driving force of the volume transition is the formation and dissociation of hydrogen bonds in the hydrogels. A certain content of CNCs can greatly enhance the shrinkage capability and mechanical strength of the hybrid hydrogels, but an excess addition may impair the contractility of the hydrogel. Furthermore, the hydrogels can be used as a matrix to adsorb dyes, such as methylene blue (MB), for water purification. MB may be partly discharged from hydrogels by saline solutions, especially by those with high ionic strength. Notably, through temperature-controlled hydrogel swelling and shrinking, doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX-HCl) can be controllably adsorbed and released from the prepared hydrogels.

A review of the properties and applications of bioadhesive hydrogels

Due to their outstanding properties, bioadhesive hydrogels have been extensively studied by researchers in recent years.
