A computational study of the vibronic effects on the electronic spectra and the photophysics of aza[7]helicene

Theoretical study of the two-photon absorption and fluorescence emission properties of bipyrazine (or hexaazatriphenylene) core based donor-π-acceptor-π-donor framework chromophores

Organic two-photon absorption (TPA) chromophores have gained much attention among researchers due to their great potential for applications in bioimaging and two-photon microscopy. For high-performance applications, it is better to get a brighter organic fluorophore at a relatively smaller size. The fluorophore brightness is proportional to the TPA cross-section (σtpa) and fluorescence quantum yield, and its simultaneous optimization is relatively challenging. In this study, using quadratic and linear response theory within the TDDFT framework, we theoretically explored the effect of structural modifications within the donor-π-acceptor-π-donor framework on the TPA and fluorescence emission properties (where donors = BAC and BOC; π-bridges = EY and EN; acceptors = BPZ and HAT; additional substituent groups R = H, F or CN). We have found the following: (a) (BAC-EY)2-A-R (A = BPZ or HAT, R = H or CN) systems could display mass-averaged TPA cross-sections in the range from 4.8 to 9.3 GM g-1 mol owing to a cooperative balance between steric hindrance and framework conjugation. (b) Based on three-state model approximation, the large TPA response of the studied BAC-containing systems has been ascribed to pure three-state contribution due to sizable transition dipole moments and small detuning energy. (c) Fully rigid acceptor HAT based systems can only display negligible small emission oscillator strength (femi); by contrast, partially flexible acceptor BPZ based systems can retain relatively large femi. We guess that the profound geometric changes within the BPZ core might account for the large emission oscillator strength (femi) of the latter systems, and the lack of an efficient overlap between transition orbitals might explain the low femi of the former systems. (d) Based on the evaluation of radiative and nonradiative rates, BPZ based systems should be better fluorescence emitters compared to HAT based ones, and the (BAC-EY)2-BPZ-CN system could exhibit not only a not-too-low Φfl (0.175) but also a large TPA response (6210 GM). In addition, it is a relatively small and simple chemical structure for experimental synthesis. Therefore, we recommend (BAC-EY)2-BPZ-CN as a potential high-performance chromophore for possible two-photon fluorescence microscopy applications.

Vibronic Effects Analysis of the Substituent Effect on the Spectral Properties of the EMI and CPL of Three [7]Helicene Derivatives

The substituent effect has a significant influence on the optical properties of spectral shape, width, and wavelength, and the intensities of the maximum peaks of emission (EMI) and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). In this work, we conducted a systematic theoretical study to investigate how substituents alter the optical response in the EMI and CPL spectra of three [7]helicene derivatives at the vibronic level. To incorporate the vibronic effect, a state-of-the-art time-dependent (TD) method was used to achieve the fully converged spectra. In the meantime, a time-independent (TI) approach also provided a way to show the progression of the spectra, serving as a complementary strategy and creating reliable documentation for the experiment. The experimental spectra of EMI and CPL are nicely reproduced, which validates the reliability of the Adiabatic Hessian (AH) model in simulating experimental data. This allowed us to analyze in detail the effect of substituents, particularly on the optical responses. The introduction of cyano and methoxy groups is highlighted, as they altered the transition dipole moments and led to a 1000-fold increase in the intensity of EMI and CPL. Moreover, substituents can also rationally alter the spectral shape of EMI and CPL by affecting the responsible normal modes. The unique CN stretching and the MeO rotation in the substituted [7]helicene are highlighted as key factors contributing to the different behaviors of EMI and CPL. This sheds light on the design and synthesis of helicenes that can serve as ideal full-color EMI and CPL emitters.

Impact of the Peripheral Ligand Layer on the Excited-State Deactivation Mechanism of Au38S2(S-Adm)20 and Au30(S-Adm)18 (S-Adm = Adamantanethiolate) Clusters

Gold nanoclusters are ideal fluorescent labels for biological imaging, disease diagnosis, and treatment. Understanding the origin of the photoluminescence phenomenon in ligand-protected gold nanoclusters is crucial for both basic science and practical applications. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations were performed to study the mechanism of excited state deactivation of Au38S2(S-Adm)20 and Au30(S-Adm)18 (S-Adm = adamantanethiolate) clusters, which have similar sizes and compositions. The computational results indicate that the differences in structural symmetry and peripheral ligand layer lead to quite different excited state deactivation mechanisms and excited state lifetimes in Au38S2(S-Adm)20 and Au30(S-Adm)18. Specifically, the μ3-S atoms and bridging thiolate (SR) in the ligand layer of Au38S2(S-Adm)20 significantly suppress the structural relaxation of ligand motifs, resulting in a prolonged excited state lifetime and higher quantum yield. For the Au30(S-Adm)18, due to the symmetry forbidden and large structural relaxation of the ligand shell, a rapid nonradiative transition process resulted. This study provides new insights into how the photoluminescence of ligand-protected gold nanoclusters is influenced by their structure and symmetry.

A theoretical investigation of benzothiadiazole derivatives for high efficiency OLEDs

It is of great importance and worthy of efforts to give a clear structure-property relationship and microscopic mechanism of fluorescence emitters with high quantum yield. In this work, we perform a detailed computational investigation to give an explanation to the high efficiency of a fluorescence emitter XBTD-NPh based TADF sensitized fluorescence (TSF) OLEDs, and construct a symmetry structure DSBNA-BTD. Theoretical calculations show that XBTD-NPh is a long-time phosphorescent material at 77 K and TADF is attributed to the RISC of T1 to S1 state. For DSBNA-BTD, excitons arrived at T1 state comes to a large rate of nonradiatively path to the ground state, meaning it is may not be an efficient TADF molecule. For both molecules, the fast IC between T2 and T1 state results in that the hot exciton channel T1-Tn-S1 makes no contribution to the TADF.

Newly Designed Quasi-intrinsic Photosensitizers for Fluorescence Image-Guided Two-Photon Photodynamic Therapy with Type I/II Photoreactions

In this work, a set of quasi-intrinsic photosensitizers are theoretically proposed based on the 2-amino-8-(1'-β-d-2'-deoxyribofuranosyl)-imidazo[1,2-α]-1,3,5-triazin-4(8H)-one (P), which could pair with the 6-amino-5-nitro-3-(1'-β-d-2'-deoxyribofuranosyl)-2(1H)-pyridone (Z) and keep the essential structural characters of nucleic acid. It is revealed that the ring expansion and electron-donating/electron-withdrawing substitution bring enhanced two-photon absorption and bright photoluminescence of these monomers, thereby facilitating the selective excitation and tumor localization through fluorescence imaging. However, instead of undergoing radiative transition (S1 → S0), the base pairing induced fluorescence quenching and rapid intersystem crossing (S1 → Tn) are observed and characterized by the reduced singlet-triplet energy gaps and large spin-orbit coupling values. To ensure the phototherapeutic properties of the considered base pairs in long-lived T1 state, we examined the vertical electron affinity as well as vertical ionization potential for production of superoxide anions via Type I photoreaction, and their required T1 energy (0.98 eV) to generate singlet oxygen 1O2 via Type II mechanism.

Linear Vibronic Coupling Approach for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering: Quantifying the Charge-Transfer Enhancement Mechanism

The outstanding amplification observed in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is due to several enhancement mechanisms, and standing out among them are the plasmonic (PL) and charge-transfer (CT) mechanisms. The theoretical estimation of the enhancement factors of the CT mechanism is challenging because the excited-state coupling between bright plasmons and dark CT states must be properly introduced into the model to obtain reliable intensities. In this work, we aim at simulating electrochemical SERS spectra, considering models of pyridine on silver clusters subjected to an external electric field E⃗ that represents the effect of an electrode potential Vel. The method adopts quantum dynamical propagations of nuclear wavepackets on the coupled PL and CT states described with linear vibronic coupling models parametrized for each E⃗ through a fragment-based maximum-overlap diabatization. By presenting results at different values of E⃗, we show that indeed there is a relation between the population transferred to the CT states and the total scattered intensity. The tuning and detuning processes of the CT states with the bright PLs as a function of the electric field are in good agreement with those observed in experiments. Finally, our estimations for the CT enhancement factors predict values in the order of 105 to 106, meaning that when the CT and PL states are both in resonance with the excitation wavelength, the CT and PL enhancements are comparable, and vibrational bands whose intensity is amplified by different mechanisms can be observed together, in agreement with what was measured by typical experiments on silver electrodes.

Photoluminescent ellipsometric circular dichroism

A novel spectroscopic technique, photoluminescent ellipsometric circular dichroism (PECD), which distinguishes all radiative electronic transitions related to molecular chiral centers. Additionally, it is proposed as complementary to the ellipsometric Raman spectroscopy (ERS) technique, thus establishing a relationship between vibrational modes and electronic transitions, associated with molecular chiral centers. In this way, PECD turns into a powerful technique for chiral material characterization. The PECD technique was performed on a chiral oligomer (1R,2R)-diiminocyclohexane, and its derivative polymer. A complete photophysical characterization in solution was performed to corroborate the new PECD technique.

Photophysics of uracil: an explicit time-dependent generating function-based method combining both nonadiabatic and spin-orbit coupling effects

We present a composite framework for calculating the rates of non-radiative deactivation processes, namely internal conversion (IC) and intersystem crossing (ISC), on an equal footing by explicitly computing the non-adiabatic coupling (NAC) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) constants, respectively. The stationary-state approach uses a time-dependent generating function based on Fermi's golden rule. We validate the applicability of the framework by computing the rate of IC for azulene, obtaining comparable rates to experimental and previous theoretical results. Next, we investigate the photophysics associated with the complex photodynamics of the uracil molecule. Interestingly, our simulated rates corroborate experimental observations. Detailed analyses using Duschinsky rotation matrices, displacement vectors and NAC matrix elements are presented to interpret the findings alongside testing the suitability of the approach for such molecular systems. The suitability of the Fermi's golden rule based method is explained qualitatively in terms of single-mode potential energy surfaces.

The Resonance Raman Spectrum of Cytosine in Water: Analysis of the Effect of Specific Solute-Solvent Interactions and Non-Adiabatic Couplings

In this contribution, we report a computational study of the vibrational Resonance Raman (vRR) spectra of cytosine in water, on the grounds of potential energy surfaces (PES) computed by time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and CAM-B3LYP and PBE0 functionals. Cytosine is interesting because it is characterized by several close-lying and coupled electronic states, challenging the approach commonly used to compute the vRR for systems where the excitation frequency is in quasi-resonance with a single state. We adopt two recently developed time-dependent approaches, based either on quantum dynamical numerical propagations of vibronic wavepackets on coupled PES or on analytical correlation functions for cases in which inter-state couplings were neglected. In this way, we compute the vRR spectra, considering the quasi-resonance with the eight lowest-energy excited states, disentangling the role of their inter-state couplings from the mere interference of their different contributions to the transition polarizability. We show that these effects are only moderate in the excitation energy range explored by experiments, where the spectral patterns can be rationalized from the simple analysis of displacements of the equilibrium positions along the different states. Conversely, at higher energies, interference and inter-state couplings play a major role, and the adoption of a fully non-adiabatic approach is strongly recommended. We also investigate the effect of specific solute-solvent interactions on the vRR spectra, by considering a cluster of cytosine, hydrogen-bonded by six water molecules, and embedded in a polarizable continuum. We show that their inclusion remarkably improves the agreement with the experiments, mainly altering the composition of the normal modes, in terms of internal valence coordinates. We also document cases, mostly for low-frequency modes, in which a cluster model is not sufficient, and more elaborate mixed quantum classical approaches, in explicit solvent models, need to be applied.

Unraveling the contributions to the spectral shape of flexible dyes in solution: insights on the absorption spectrum of an oxyluciferin analogue

We present a computational investigation of the absorption spectrum in water of 5,5-spirocyclopropyl-oxyluciferin (5,5-CprOxyLH), an analogue of the emitter compound responsible for the bioluminescence in fireflies. Several factors participate in determining the 5,5-CprOxyLH's spectral shape: (i) the contribution of the four close-energy excited states, which show significant non-adiabatic couplings, (ii) the flexible molecular structure and (iii) the specific interactions established with the surrounding environment, which strongly couple the protic solvent dynamics with the dye's spectral response. To tackle the challenge to capture and dissect the role of all these effects we preliminarily investigate the role of non-adiabatic couplings with quantum dynamics simulations and a linear vibronic coupling model in the gas phase. Then, we account for both the molecular flexibility and solvent interactions by resorting to a mixed quantum classical protocol, named Adiabatic Molecular Dynamics generalized Vertical Gradient (Ad-MD|gVG), which is built on a method recently proposed by some of us. It is rooted in the partition between stiff degrees of freedom of the dye, accounted for at the vibronic level within the harmonic approximation, and flexible degrees of freedom of the solute (and of the solvent), described classically through a sampling based on Molecular Dynamics (MD). Ad-MD|gVG avoids spurious effects arising in the excited state Hessians due to non-adiabatic couplings, and can therefore be applied to account for the contributions of the first four excited states to the 5,5-CprOxyLH absorption spectrum. The final simulated spectrum is in very good agreement with the experiment, especially when the MD is driven by a refined quantum-mechanically derived force-field. More importantly, the origin of each separate contribution to the spectral shape is appropriately accounted for, paving the way to future applications of the method to more complex systems or alternative spectroscopies, as emission or circular dichroism.

FCclasses3: Vibrationally-resolved spectra simulated at the edge of the harmonic approximation

We introduce FCclasses3, a code to carry out vibronic simulations of electronic spectra and nonradiative rates, based on the harmonic approximation. Key new features are: implementation of the full family of vertical and adiabatic harmonic models, vibrational analysis in curvilinear coordinates, extension to several electronic spectroscopies and implementation of time-dependent approaches. The use of curvilinear valence internal coordinates allows the adoption of quadratic model potential energy surfaces (PES) of the initial and final states expanded at arbitrary configurations. Moreover, the implementation of suitable projectors provides a robust framework for defining reduced-dimensionality models by sorting flexible coordinates out of the harmonic subset, so that they can then be treated at anharmonic level, or with mixed quantum classical approaches. A set of tools to facilitate input preparation and output analysis is also provided. We show the program at work in the simulation of different spectra (one and two-photon absorption, emission and resonance Raman) and internal conversion rate of a typical rigid molecule, anthracene. Then, we focus on absorption and emission spectra of a series of flexible polyphenyl molecules, highlighting the relevance of some of the newly implemented features. Nonadiabatic Vibrational Resonance Raman Spectra from Quantum Dynamics Propagations with LVC Models. Application to Thymine

We present a viable protocol to compute vibrational resonance Raman (vRR) spectra for systems with several close-lying and potentially coupled electronic states. It is based on the parametrization of linear vibronic coupling (LVC) models from time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations and quantum dynamics propagations of vibronic wavepackets with the multilayer version of the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (ML-MCTDH) method. Our approach is applied to thymine considering seven coupled electronic states, comprising the three lowest bright states, and all vibrational coordinates. Computed vRR at different excitation wavelengths are in good agreement with the available experimental data. Up to 250 nm the signal is dominated by the lowest HOMO → LUMO transition, whereas at 233 nm, in the valley between the two lowest energy absorption bands, the contributions of all the three bright states, and their interferences and couplings, are important. Inclusion of solvent (water) effects improves the agreement with experiment, reproducing the coalescence of vibrational bands due to CC and C═O stretchings. With our approach we disentangle and assess the effect of interferences between the contribution of different quasi-resonant states to the transition polarizability and the effect of interstate couplings. Our findings strongly suggest that in cases of close-lying and potentially coupled states a simple inclusion of interference effects is not sufficient, and a fully nonadiabatic computation should instead be performed. We also document that for systems with strong couplings and quasi-degenerate states, the use of HT perturbative approach, not designed for these cases, may lead to large artifacts.

Computational Model for Electrochemical Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering: Key Role of the Surface Charges and Synergy between Electromagnetic and Charge-Transfer Enhancement Mechanisms

We present a computational model for electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman scattering (EC-SERS). The surface excess of charge induced by the electrode potential (V_el) was introduced by applying an external electric field to a set of clusters [Ag_n]^q with (n, q) of (19, ±1) or (20, 0) on which a molecule adsorbs. Using DFT/TD-DFT calculations, these metal-molecule complexes were classified by the adsorbate partial charge, and the main V_el-dependent properties were simultaneously studied with the aid of vibronic resonance Raman computations, namely, changes on the vibrational wavenumbers, relative intensities, and enhancement factors (EFs) for all SERS mechanisms: chemical or nonresonant, and resonance Raman with bright states of the adsorbate, charge-transfer (CT) states, and plasmon-like excitations on the metal cluster. We selected two molecules to test our model, pyridine, for which V_el has a remarkable effect, and 9,10-bis((E)-2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl)anthracene, which is almost insensitive to the applied bias. The results nicely reproduced most of the experimental observations, while the limitations of our approach were critically evaluated. We detected that accounting explicitly for the surface charges is key for EC-SERS models and that the highest calculated EFs, up to 10⁷ to 10⁸, are obtained by interstate coupling of bright local excitations of the metal cluster and CT states. These results highlight the importance of nonadiabatic effects in SERS and the capabilities of EC-SERS as a technique with potential to study excited-state coupling by tuning the CT and plasmon-like states by manipulating V_el.
