A "flexible" carborane-cored luminogen: variable emission behaviours in aggregates

Structure-constraint induced increase in Lewis acidity of tris(ortho-carboranyl)borane and selective complexation with Bestmann ylides

The Lewis acidity of tris(ortho-carboranyl)borane has been slightly increased by mimicking the structural evolution from triarylborane to 9-aryl-9-borafluorene. The o-carborane-based analogue (C2B10H10)2B(C2B10H11), obtained via salt elimination between LiC2B10H11 and (C2B10H10)2BBr, has been fully characterized. Gutmann-Beckett and computational fluoride/hydride ion affinity (FIA/HIA) studies have confirmed the increase in Lewis acidity, which is attributable to structural constraint imposed by the CC-coupling between two carboranyl groups. Selective complexation of (C2B10H10)2B(C2B10H11) with Bestmann ylides R3PCCO (R = Ph, Cy) has been achieved, enabling further conversion into the zwitterionic phospholium salt through NHC-catalyzed proton transfer.

The synthesis and application of o-carborane-based macrocyclic arenes

Two o-carborane-hybridized macrocyclic arenes have been synthesized via Friedel-Crafts alkylation of carborane diaryl derivatives. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis clearly revealed their cavity structure and intermolecular interaction force. These novel macrocycles exhibited aggregation-induced luminescence and intramolecular charge transfer properties and also significant selectivity towards nitro explosive compounds. This work provided a method for the synthesis of hybridized macrocyclic arenes.

Carboranylphosphines: B9-Substituted Derivatives with Enhanced Reactivity for the Anchoring to Dendrimers

Several ortho-carboranes bearing a phenoxy or a phenylamino group in the B9 position were prepared employing various protection and deprotection strategies. Following established protocols, dendritic compounds were synthesized from a hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene or thiophosphoryl chloride core, and possible anchoring options for the B9-substituted ortho-carboranes were investigated experimentally and theoretically (DFT). Furthermore, 1- or 1,2-phosphanyl-substituted carborane derivatives were obtained. The resulting diethyl-, diisopropyl-, di-tert-butyl-, diphenyl- or diethoxyphosphines bearing a tunable ortho-carborane moiety are intriguing ligands for future applications in homogeneous catalysis or the medicinal sector.

Investigation of Mechanochromic Luminescence of Pyrene-based Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogens: Correlation between Molecular Packing and Luminescence Behavior

To better understand the correlation between molecular structure and optical properties such as aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) emission, two new pyrene-based derivatives with substitutions at the 4- and 5-positions (1HH) and at the 4-, 5-, 9-, and 10-positions (2HH) were designed and synthesized. Cyano groups were introduced at the periphery of the synthesized compounds (1HCN, 1OCN, 1BCN, 2HCN, 2OCN, and 2BCN) to investigate the influence of these groups on the emission properties of the pyrene derivatives both in solution and in the solid state. The fluorescence emission performance of these compounds in water/acetone mixtures was simultaneously studied, revealing outstanding aggregation-induced emission properties. The typical shift in emission maxima to higher values was attributed to J-aggregate formation in the aggregate state. Careful investigation of the crystal structures demonstrated abundant and intense intermolecular interactions, such as C-H…π and C-H…N hydrogen bonds, contributing to the remarkable mechanochromic luminescence performance of these compounds. The MCL properties of all the compounds were investigated using powder X-ray diffraction, and the remarkable mechanochromic properties were attributed to J-aggregate phenomena in the solid state. These results provide valuable insights into the structure-property relationship of organic MCL materials, guiding the design of efficient organic MCL materials.

Conductance of o-carborane-based wires with different substitution patterns

Here, we report the synthesis, structure, and single-molecule conductance of three o-carborane-based molecular wires (ortho-, meta- and para-CN) with multiple conduction channels. The effect of connectivity in target wires compared with the corresponding phenyl-centered wires was studied using the scanning tunneling microscope break junction (STM-BJ) technique and theoretical calculations. Interestingly, the three-dimensional structure in o-carborane-based wires can effectively promote the through-space transmission paths or the formation of stable molecular junctions compared to the corresponding phenyl-centered wires. Moreover, the significant conductance difference of o-carborane-based wires was due to the combination of multiple conduction channels and quantum interference. Understanding the effects of different bridging groups and anchor group substitution patterns provides guidelines for designing o-carborane-based multichannel molecular wires.

Relationship between the Molecular Geometry and the Radiative Efficiency in Naphthyl-Based Bis-Ortho-Carboranyl Luminophores

The efficiency of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT)-based emission on π-aromatic-group-appended closo-ortho-carboranyl luminophores is known to be affected by structural fluctuations and molecular geometry, but investigation of this relationship has been in progress to date. In this study, four naphthyl-based bis-o-carboranyl compounds, in which hydrogen (15CH and 26CH) or trimethysilyl groups (15CS and 26CS) were appended at the o-carborane cage, were synthesized and fully characterized. All the compounds barely displayed an emissive trace in solution at 298 K; however, 15CH and 26CH distinctly exhibited a dual emissive pattern in rigid states (in solution at 77 K and in films), attributed to locally excited (LE) and ICT-based emission, while 15CS and 26CS showed strong ICT-based greenish emission. Intriguingly, the molecular structures of the four compounds, analyzed by single X-ray crystallography, showed that the C-C bond axis of the o-carborane cage in the trimethysilyl group-appended compounds 15CS and 26CS were more orthogonal to the plane of the appended naphthyl group than those in 15CH and 26CH. These features indicate that 15CS and 26CS present an efficient ICT transition based on strong exo-π-interaction, resulting in a higher quantum efficiency (Φ_em) for ICT-based radiative decay than those of 15CH and 26CH. Moreover, the 26CS structure revealed most orthogonal geometry, resulting in the highest Φ_em and lowest k_nr values for the ICT-based emission. Consequently, all the findings verified that efficient ICT-based radiative decay of aromatic group-appended o-carboranyl luminophores could be achieved by the formation of a specific geometry between the o-carborane cage and the aromatic plane.

Metal-Catalyzed and Metal-Free Nucleophilic Substitution of 7-I-B18H21

In this work, two pathways of reactivity are investigated to generate site-specific substitutions at the B7 vertex of the luminescent boron cluster, anti-B₁₈H₂₂. First, a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction utilizing the precursor 7-I-B₁₈H₂₁ and a series of model nucleophiles was developed, ultimately producing several B-N- and B-O-substituted species. Interestingly, the B-I bond in this cluster can also be substituted in an uncatalyzed fashion, leading to the formation of various B-N, B-O, and B-S products. This work highlights intricate differences corresponding to these two reaction pathways and analyzes the role of solvents and additives on product distributions. As a result of our synthetic studies, seven new B₁₈-based clusters were synthesized, isolated, and characterized by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The photoluminescence properties of two structurally similar ether and thioether products were further investigated, with both exhibiting blue fluorescence in solution at 298 K and long-lived green or yellow phosphorescence at 77 K. Overall, this work shows, for the first time, the ability to perform substitution of a boron-halogen bond with nucleophiles in a B₁₈-based cluster, resulting in the formation of photoluminescent molecules.

Effects of molecular geometry on the efficiency of intramolecular charge transfer-based luminescence in o-carboranyl-substituted 1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazoles

The distinct difference in solid-state emission efficiency between 1H-phenanthro[9,10-d]imidazole–o-carboranyl luminophores showed that the geometric orientation is a key factor for controlling intramolecular charge transfer-based radiative decay.

Synthesis of 3-Aryl-ortho-carboranes with Sensitive Functional Groups

A simple and efficient method was developed for the one-pot synthesis of 3-aryl derivatives of ortho-carborane with sensitive functional groups using 3-iodo-ortho-carborane and aryl zinc bromides that were generated in situ. A series of 3-aryl-ortho-carboranes, including those containing nitrile and ester groups, 3-RC₆H₄-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₁₁ (R = p-Me, p-NMe₂, p-OCH₂OMe, p-OMe, o-CN, p-CN, o-COOEt, m-COOEt, p-COOEt) was synthesized using this approach. The solid-state structures of 3-RC₆H₄-1,2-C₂B₁₀H₁₁ (R = p-OMe, o-CN, and p-CN) were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The intramolecular hydrogen bonding involving the ortho-substituents of the aryl ring and the CH and BH groups of carborane was discussed.
