Abstract
4D printing polymeric biomaterials can change their morphology or performance in response to stimuli from the external environment, compensating for the shortcomings of traditional 3D-printed static structures. This paper provides a systematic overview of 4D printing polymeric biomaterials for tissue regeneration and provides an in-depth discussion of the principles of these materials, including various smart properties, unique deformation mechanisms under stimulation conditions, and so on. A series of typical polymeric biomaterials and their composites are introduced from structural design and preparation methods, and their applications in tissue regeneration are discussed. Finally, the development prospect of 4D printing polymeric biomaterials is envisioned, aiming to provide innovative ideas and new perspectives for their more efficient and convenient application in tissue regeneration.

Abstract
Tissue engineering research has undergone to a revolutionary improvement, thanks to technological advancements, such as the introduction of bioprinting technologies. The ability to develop suitable customized biomaterial inks/bioinks, with excellent printability and ability to promote cell proliferation and function, has a deep impact on such improvements. In this context, printing inks based on chitosan and its derivatives have been instrumental. Thus, the current review aims at providing a comprehensive overview on chitosan-based materials as suitable inks for 3D/4D (bio)printing and their applicability in creating advanced drug delivery platforms and tissue engineered constructs. Furthermore, relevant strategies to improve the mechanical and biological performances of this biomaterial are also highlighted.

Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has emerged as a promising scaffold fabrication strategy for tissue engineering with excellent control over scaffold geometry and microstructure. Nanobiomaterials as bioinks play a key role in manipulating the cellular microenvironment to alter its growth and development. This review first introduces the commonly used nanomaterials in tissue engineering scaffolds, including natural polymers, synthetic polymers, and polymer derivatives, and reveals the improvement of nanomaterials on scaffold performance. Second, the 3D bioprinting technologies of inkjet-based bioprinting, extrusion-based bioprinting, laser-assisted bioprinting, and stereolithography bioprinting are comprehensively itemized, and the advantages and underlying mechanisms are revealed. Then the convergence of 3D bioprinting and nanotechnology applications in tissue engineering scaffolds, such as bone, nerve, blood vessel, tendon, and internal organs, are discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives of convergence of 3D bioprinting and nanotechnology are proposed. This review will provide scientific guidance to develop 3D bioprinting tissue engineering scaffolds by nanotechnology.

Abstract
Cadmium sulfide (CdS) quantum dots (QDs) were homogeneously embedded into chitosan (CTS), denoted as CdS@CTS, via an in situ hydrothermal method. The intact structure of the synthesized materials was preserved using freeze-drying. The materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution TEM, scanning TEM, dispersive energy X-ray (EDX) for elemental analysis and mapping, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, thermogravimetric analysis, UV-vis spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The synthesis procedure offered CdS QDs of 1-7 nm (average particle size of 3.2 nm). The functional groups of CTS modulate the in situ growth of CdS QDs and prevent the agglomeration of CdS QDs, offering homogenous distribution inside CTS. CdS@CTS QDs can also be used for naked-eye detection of heavy metals with high selectivity toward copper (Cu2+) ions. The mechanism of interactions between Cu2+ ions and CdS@CTS QDs were further studied.

Abstract
3D printing, or additive manufacturing, has gained considerable interest due to its versatility regarding design as well as in the large choice of materials. It is a powerful tool in the field of personalized pharmaceutical treatment, particularly crucial for pediatric and geriatric patients. Polysaccharides are abundant and inexpensive natural polymers, that are already widely used in the food industry and as excipients in pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations. Due to their intrinsic properties, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, non-immunogenicity, etc., polysaccharides are largely investigated as matrices for drug delivery. Although an increasing number of interesting reviews on additive manufacturing and drug delivery are being published, there is a gap concerning the printing of polysaccharides. In this article, we will review recent advances in the 3D printing of polysaccharides focused on drug delivery applications. Among the large family of polysaccharides, the present review will particularly focus on cellulose and cellulose derivatives, chitosan and sodium alginate, printed by fused deposition modeling and extrusion-based printing.

Abstract
Immobilizing microorganisms inside 3D printed semi-permeable substrates can be desirable for biotechnological processes since it simplifies product separation and purification, reducing costs, and processing time. To this end, we developed a strategy for synthesizing a feedstock suitable for 3D bioprinting of mechanically rigid and insoluble materials with embedded living bacteria. The processing route is based on a highly particle-filled alumina/chitosan nanocomposite gel which is reinforced by (a) electrostatic interactions with alginate and (b) covalent binding between the chitosan molecules with the mild gelation agent genipin. To analyze network formation and material properties, we characterized the rheological properties and printability of the feedstock gel. Stability measurements showed that the genipin-crosslinked chitosan/alginate/alumina gels did not dissolve in PBS, NaOH, or HCl after 60 days of incubation. Alginate-containing gels also showed less swelling in water than gels without alginate. Furthermore, E. coli bacteria were embedded in the nanocomposites and we analyzed the influence of the individual bioink components as well as of the printing process on bacterial viability. Here, the addition of alginate was necessary to maintain the effective viability of the embedded bacteria, while samples without alginate showed no bacterial viability. The experimental results demonstrate the potential of this approach for producing macroscopic bioactive materials with complex 3D geometries as a platform for novel applications in bioprocessing.
