Nanocomposites Based on Magnetic Nanoparticles and Metal-Organic Frameworks for Therapy, Diagnosis, and Theragnostics

In the last two decades, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with highly tunable structure and porosity, have emerged as drug nanocarriers in the biomedical field. In particular, nanoscaled MOFs (nanoMOFs) have been widely investigated because of their potential biocompatibility, high drug loadings, and progressive release. To enhance their properties, MOFs have been combined with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to form magnetic nanocomposites (MNP@MOF) with additional functionalities. Due to the magnetic properties of the MNPs, their presence in the nanosystems enables potential combinatorial magnetic targeted therapy and diagnosis. In this Review, we analyze the four main synthetic strategies currently employed for the fabrication of MNP@MOF nanocomposites, namely, mixing, in situ formation of MNPs in presynthesized MOF, in situ formation of MOFs in the presence of MNPs, and layer-by-layer methods. Additionally, we discuss the current progress in bioapplications, focusing on drug delivery systems (DDSs), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic hyperthermia (MHT), and theragnostic systems. Overall, we provide a comprehensive overview of the recent advances in the development and bioapplications of MNP@MOF nanocomposites, highlighting their potential for future biomedical applications with a critical analysis of the challenges and limitations of these nanocomposites in terms of their synthesis, characterization, biocompatibility, and applicability.

Photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline antibiotic over MIL-101(Cr)/FeOOH nanocomposite as stable and efficient visible light responsive photocatalyst

Designing an inexpensive, easily synthesized, stable and efficient photocatalyst is a major challenge in photocatalysis area, especially when photo-reaction is performed in aquatic medium to degrade organic pollutants. To this aim, nano-sized MIL-101(Cr) (MIL = Materials Institute Lavoisier), as chemically tolerant metal-organic framework (MOF), was simply prepared via HF-free hydrothermal synthesis procedure. In order to decorate amorphous FeOOH quantum dots (QDs) on the surface of this MOF, various amounts of FeOOH QDs (i.e., 5, 10, 15 and 20 wt%) were synthesized in the presence of MIL-101(Cr) to prepare MIL-101(Cr)/FeOOH(x%) nanocomposites. Decoration of such iron oxide quantum dots on the surface of MIL-101(Cr) and investigation of its activity in photo-Fenton degradation of tetracycline (TC) antibiotic is reported here for the first time. Among the synthesized nanocomposites, MIL-101(Cr)/FeOOH(15%) demonstrated superior photo-Fenton activity in degradation of TC (80%) at short reaction time under optimum reaction condition using the energy-efficient white LED lamps as visible light source. It was observed that the synergy between any component of this photo-Fenton system such as nanocomposite, hydrogen peroxide and visible light is the main reason for enhancement of TC removal over time. Also, neither MIL-101(Cr) nor FeOOH QDs exhibited poor degradation efficiency, which implies the positive role of the coupling of these materials. Furthermore, the stability and recoverability of MIL-101(Cr)/FeOOH(15%) nanocomposite was investigated in four photo-Fenton cycles, which no significant decrease in TC degradation performance was observed.

Highly Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Tetracycline by Modifying UiO-66 via Different Regulation Strategies

Wastewater containing organic pollutants cause potential harm to the environment and human health. A series of zirconium-organic frameworks (UiO-66) and their composites were synthesized by solvothermal methods, including band gap adjustment, heterojunction construction, and metal ion doping. For the model pollutant tetracycline (TC), all of the prepared catalysts could achieve effective degradation of it. Therein, the degradation efficiency of tetracycline could reach 95% under the UV irradiation with the aid of the catalyst, in which the UiO-66-NDC was modified with P-C3N4. The free radical capture experiments demonstrated that the superoxide radical (•O2-) was the main oxidizing species for the photodegradation of tetracycline. Hence, the improvement strategy of the catalyst would provide some enlightenment for the development of more efficient photocatalysts for the degradation of organic dyes in wastewater.

Metalloporphyrin Metal–Organic Frameworks: Eminent Synthetic Strategies and Recent Practical Exploitations

The emergence of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in recent years has stimulated the interest of scientists working in this area as one of the most applicable archetypes of three-dimensional structures that can be used as promising materials in several applications including but not limited to (photo-)catalysis, sensing, separation, adsorption, biological and electrochemical efficiencies and so on. Not only do MOFs have their own specific versatile structures, tunable cavities, and remarkably high surface areas, but they also present many alternative procedures to overcome emerging obstacles. Since the discovery of such highly effective materials, they have been employed for multiple uses; additionally, the efforts towards the synthesis of MOFs with specific properties based on planned (template) synthesis have led to the construction of several promising types of MOFs possessing large biological or bioinspired ligands. Specifically, metalloporphyrin-based MOFs have been created where the porphyrin moieties are either incorporated as struts within the framework to form porphyrinic MOFs or encapsulated inside the cavities to construct porphyrin@MOFs which can combine the peerless properties of porphyrins and porous MOFs simultaneously. In this context, the main aim of this review was to highlight their structure, characteristics, and some of their prominent present-day applications.

Strategies for the application of metal-organic frameworks in catalytic reactions

Efficient catalysts play crucial roles in various organic reactions and polymerization. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have the merits of ultrahigh porosity, large surface area, dispersed polymetallic sites and modifiable linkers, which make them promising candidates for catalyzation. This review primarily summarizes the recent research progress on diverse strategies for tailoring MOFs that are endowed with excellent catalytic behavior. These strategies include utilizing MOFs as nanosized reaction channels, metal nodes decorated as catalytic active sites and the modification of ligands or linkers. All these make them highly attractive to various applications, especially in catalyzing organic reactions or polymerizations and they have proven to be effective catalysts for a wide variety of reactions. MOFs are still an evolving field with tremendous prospects; therefore, through the research and development of more modification and regulation strategies, MOFs will realize their wider practical application in the future.
