Room temperature synthesized solid solution AuFe nanoparticles and their transformation into Au/Fe Janus nanocrystals

FeAu mixing for high-temperature control of light scattering at the nanometer scale

Control of the optical properties of a nanoparticle (NP) through its structural changes underlies optical data processing, dynamic coloring, and smart sensing at the nanometer scale. Here, we report on the concept of controlling the light scattering by a NP through mixing of weakly miscible chemical elements (Fe and Au), supporting a thermal-induced phase transformation. The transformation corresponds to the transition from a homogeneous metastable solid solution phase of the (Fe,Au) NP towards an equilibrium biphasic Janus-type NP. We demonstrate that the phase transformation is thermally activated by laser heating up to a threshold of 800 °C (for NPs with a size of hundreds of nm), leading to the associated changes in the light scattering and color of the NP. The results thereby pave the way for the implementation of optical sensors triggered by a high temperature at the nanometer scale via NPs based on metal alloys.

Gold-iron oxide (Au/Fe3O4) magnetic nanoparticles as the nanoplatform for binding of bioactive molecules through self-assembly

Nanomedicine plays a crucial role in the development of next-generation therapies. The use of nanoparticles as drug delivery platforms has become a major area of research in nanotechnology. To be effective, these nanoparticles must interact with desired drug molecules and release them at targeted sites. The design of these “nanoplatforms” typically includes a functional core, an organic coating with functional groups for drug binding, and the drugs or bioactive molecules themselves. However, by exploiting the coordination chemistry between organic molecules and transition metal centers, the self-assembly of drugs onto the nanoplatform surfaces can bypass the need for an organic coating, simplifying the materials synthesis process. In this perspective, we use gold-iron oxide nanoplatforms as examples and outline the prospects and challenges of using self-assembly to prepare drug-nanoparticle constructs. Through a case study on the binding of insulin on Au-dotted Fe3O4 nanoparticles, we demonstrate how a self-assembly system can be developed. This method can also be adapted to other combinations of transition metals, with the potential for scaling up. Furthermore, the self-assembly method can also be considered as a greener alternative to traditional methods, reducing the use of chemicals and solvents. In light of the current climate of environmental awareness, this shift towards sustainability in the pharmaceutical industry would be welcomed.

Structural evolution under physical and chemical stimuli of metastable Au-Fe nanoalloys obtained by laser ablation in liquid

Metastable alloy nanoparticles are investigated for their variety of appealing properties exploitable for photonics, magnetism, catalysis and nanobiotechnology. Notably, nanophases out of thermodynamic equilibrium feature a complex "ultrastructure" leading to a dynamic evolution of composition and atomic arrangement in response to physical-chemical stimuli. In this manuscript, metastable Au-Fe alloy nanoparticles were produced by laser ablation in liquid, an emerging versatile synthetic approach for freezing multielement nanosystems in non-equilibrium conditions. The Au-Fe nanoalloys were characterized through electron microscopy, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The dynamics of the structure of the Au-Fe system was tracked at high temperature under vacuum and atmospheric conditions, evidencing the intrinsic transformative nature of the metastable nanoalloy produced by laser ablation in liquid. This dynamic structure is relevant to possible application in several fields, from photocatalysis to nanomedicine, as demonstrated through an experiment of magnetic resonance imaging in biological fluids.

Molecular Exchange of Dynamic Imine Bond for the Etching of Polymer Particles

The underlying trend of colloidal synthesis has focused on extending the structure and composition complexity of colloidal particles. Hollow and yolk-shell particles are successful examples that have potential applications in frontier fields. In this paper, we develop a facile and controllable etching method based on the molecular exchange of the dynamic imine bond to generate cavities in polymer particles. Starting from boronate ester polymer particles and inorganic@boronate core-shell particles with the imine bonds incorporated in the polymer networks, our etching method easily affords hollow and yolk-shell particles with tunable shell thicknesses. The molecular exchange dynamics analysis indicates that guest amine molecules cause the reconstruction of imine bonds and the leakage of molecular and oligomer fragments, resulting in the formation of the hollow structure. This molecular exchange-based etching method may be of interest in the construction of polymer architectures with increased composition and structure complexities. Bimetallic Janus Nanocrystals: Syntheses and Applications

Bimetallic Janus nanocrystals have received considerable interest in recent years owing to their unique properties and niche applications. The side-by-side distribution of two distinct metals provides a flexible platform for tailoring the optical and catalytic properties of nanocrystals. First, a brief introduction to the structural features of bimetallic Janus nanocrystals, followed by an extensive discussion of the synthetic approaches, is given. The strategies and experimental controls for achieving the Janus structure, as well as the mechanistic understandings, are specifically discussed. Then, a number of intriguing properties and applications enabled by the Janus nanocrystals are highlighted. Finally, this article is concluded with future directions and outlooks with respect to both syntheses and applications of this new class of functional nanomaterials.

Non-Heating Alternating Magnetic Field Nanomechanical Stimulation of Biomolecule Structures via Magnetic Nanoparticles as the Basis for Future Low-Toxic Biomedical Applications

The review discusses the theoretical, experimental and toxicological aspects of the prospective biomedical application of functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) activated by a low frequency non-heating alternating magnetic field (AMF). In this approach, known as nano-magnetomechanical activation (NMMA), the MNPs are used as mediators that localize and apply force to such target biomolecular structures as enzyme molecules, transport vesicles, cell organelles, etc., without significant heating. It is shown that NMMA can become a biophysical platform for a family of therapy methods including the addressed delivery and controlled release of therapeutic agents from transport nanomodules, as well as selective molecular nanoscale localized drugless nanomechanical impacts. It is characterized by low system biochemical and electromagnetic toxicity. A technique of 3D scanning of the NMMA region with the size of several mm to several cm over object internals has been described.
