Innovations and challenges in adsorption-based wastewater remediation: A comprehensive review

Water contamination is an escalating emergency confronting communities worldwide. While traditional adsorbents have laid the groundwork for effective water purification, their selectivity, capacity, and sustainability limitations have driven the search for more advanced solutions. Despite many technological advancements, economic, environmental, and regulatory hurdles challenge the practical application of advanced adsorption techniques in large-scale water treatment. Integrating nanotechnology, advanced material fabrication techniques, and data-driven design enabled by artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have led to a new generation of optimized, high-performance adsorbents. These advanced materials leverage properties like high surface area, tailored pore structures, and functionalized surfaces to capture diverse water contaminants efficiently. With a focus on sustainability and effectiveness, this review highlights the transformative potential of these advanced materials in setting new benchmarks for water purification technologies. This article delivers an in-depth exploration of the current landscape and future directions of adsorbent technology for water remediation, advocating for a multidisciplinary approach to overcome existing barriers in large-scale water treatment applications.

Improving the hydrothermal stability of Al-rich Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite via Pr-ion modification

Al-rich (Si/Al = 4-6) Cu-SSZ-13 has been recognized as one of the potential catalysts to replace the commercial Cu-SSZ-13 (Si/Al = 10-12) towards ammonia-assisted selective catalytic reduction (NH3-SCR). However, poor hydrothermal stability is a great obstacle for Al-rich zeolites to meet the catalytic applications containing water vapor. Herein, we demonstrate that the hydrothermal stability of Al-rich Cu-SSZ-13 can be dramatically enhanced via Pr-ion modification. Particularly, after high-temperature hydrothermal aging (HTA), CuPr1.2-SSZ-13-HTA with an optimal Pr content of 1.2 wt% exhibits a T80 (temperature window of NO conversion above 80%) window of 225-550 °C and a T90 window of 250-350 °C. These values are superior to those of Cu-SSZ-13-HTA (225-450 °C for T80 and no T90 window). The results of X-ray diffraction Rietveld refinement, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and spectral characterization reveal that Pr ions mainly located in the eight-membered rings (8MRs) in SSZ-13 zeolite can inhibit the generation of inactive CuOx during hydrothermal aging. This finding is further supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which suggest that the presence of Pr ions restrains the transformation from Cu2+ ions in 6MRs into CuOx, resulting in enhanced hydrothermal stability. It is also noted that an excessive amount of Pr ions in Cu-SSZ-13 would result in the production of CuOx that causes the decline of catalytic performance. The present work provides a promising strategy for creating a hydrothermally stable Cu-SSZ-13 zeolite catalyst by adding secondary metal ions.

Water structures on acidic zeolites and their roles in catalysis

The local reaction environment of catalytic active sites can be manipulated to modify the kinetics and thermodynamic properties of heterogeneous catalysis. Because of the unique physical-chemical nature of water, heterogeneously catalyzed reactions involving specific interactions between water molecules and active sites on catalysts exhibit distinct outcomes that are different from those performed in the absence of water. Zeolitic materials are being applied with the presence of water for heterogeneous catalytic reactions in the chemical industry and our transition to sustainable energy. Mechanistic investigation and in-depth understanding about the behaviors and the roles of water are essentially required for zeolite chemistry and catalysis. In this review, we focus on the discussions of the nature and structures of water adsorbed/stabilized on Brønsted and Lewis acidic zeolites based on experimental observations as well as theoretical calculation results. The unveiled functions of water structures in determining the catalytic efficacy of zeolite-catalyzed reactions have been overviewed and the strategies frequently developed for enhancing the stabilization of zeolite catalysts are highlighted. Recent advancement will contribute to the development of innovative catalytic reactions and the rationalization of catalytic performances in terms of activity, selectivity and stability with the presence of water vapor or in condensed aqueous phase.

Reactant-Induced Structural Evolution of Pt Catalysts Confined in Zeolite

Reactant-induced structural evolutions of heterogeneous metal catalysts are frequently observed in numerous catalytic systems, which can be associated with the formation or deactivation of active sites. In this work, we will show the structural transformation of subnanometer Pt clusters in pure-silica MFI zeolite structure in the presence of CO, O2, and/or H2O and the catalytic consequences of the Pt-zeolite materials derived from various treatment conditions. By applying the appropriate pretreatment under a reactant atmosphere, we can precisely modulate the size distribution of Pt species spanning from single Pt atoms to small Pt nanoparticles (1-5 nm) in the zeolite matrix, resulting in the desirably active and stable Pt species for CO oxidation. We also show the incorporation of Fe into the zeolite framework greatly promotes the stability of Pt species against undesired sintering under harsh conditions (up to 650 °C in the presence of CO, O2, and moisture).

Does Water Enable Porosity in Aluminosilicate Zeolites? Porous Frameworks versus Dense Minerals

Recently identified zeolite precursors consisting of concentrated, hyposolvated homogeneous alkalisilicate liquids, hydrated silicate ionic liquids (HSIL), minimize correlation of synthesis variables and enable one to isolate and examine the impact of complex parameters such as water content on zeolite crystallization. HSIL are highly concentrated, homogeneous liquids containing water as a reactant rather than bulk solvent. This simplifies elucidation of the role of water during zeolite synthesis. Hydrothermal treatment at 170 °C of Al-doped potassium HSIL with chemical composition 0.5SiO₂:1KOH:xH₂O:0.013Al₂O₃ yields porous merlinoite (MER) zeolite when H₂O/KOH exceeds 4 and dense, anhydrous megakalsilite when H₂O/KOH is lower. Solid phase products and precursor liquids were fully characterized using XRD, SEM, NMR, TGA, and ICP analysis. Phase selectivity is discussed in terms of cation hydration as the mechanism, allowing a spatial cation arrangement enabling the formation of pores. Under water deficient conditions, the entropic penalty of cation hydration in the solid is large and cations need to be entirely coordinated by framework oxygens, leading to dense, anhydrous networks. Hence, the water activity in the synthesis medium and the affinity of a cation to either coordinate to water or to aluminosilicate decides whether a porous, hydrated, or a dense, anhydrous framework is formed.

Preparation, Characterization, and Performance of Natural Zeolites as Alternative Materials for Beer Filtration

The clarity of the beer is essential to its marketability and good consumer approval. Moreover, the beer filtration aims to remove the unwanted constituents that cause beer haze formation. Natural zeolite, an inexpensive and widespread material, was tested as a substitute filter media for diatomaceous earth in removing the haze constituents in beer. The zeolitic tuff samples were collected from two quarries in Northern Romania: Chilioara, in which the zeolitic tuff has a clinoptilolite content of about 65%, and the Valea Pomilor quarry, containing zeolitic tuff with a clinoptilolite content of about 40%. Two-grain sizes, <40 and <100 µm, from each quarry were prepared and thermally treated at 450 °C in order to improve their adsorption properties and remove organic compounds and for physico-chemical characterization. The prepared zeolites were used for beer filtration in different mixtures with commercial filter aids (DIF BO and CBL3) in laboratory-scale experiments, and the filtered beer was characterized in terms of pH, turbidity, color, taste, flavor, and concentrations of the major and trace elements. The results showed that the taste, flavor, and pH of the filtered beer were generally not affected by filtration, while turbidity and color decreased with an increase in the zeolite content used in the filtration. The concentrations of Na and Mg in the beer were not significantly altered by filtration; Ca and K slowly increased, while Cd and Co were below the limits of quantification. Our results show that natural zeolites are promising aids for beer filtration and can be readily substituted for diatomaceous earth without significant changes in brewery industry process equipment and protocols for preparation.

Synthesis strategies to control the Al distribution in zeolites: thermodynamic and kinetic aspects

The activity and selectivity of acid-catalyzed chemistry is highly dependent on the Brønsted and Lewis acid sites generated by Al substitutions in a zeolite framework with the desired pore architecture. The siting of two Al atoms in close proximity in the framework of high-silica zeolites can also play a decisive role in improving the performance of redox catalysts by producing exchangeable positions for extra-framework multivalent cations. Thus, considerable attention has been devoted to controlling the Al incorporation through direct synthesis approaches and post-synthesis treatments to optimize the performance as (industrial) solid catalysts and to develop new acid- and redox-catalyzed reactions. This Feature Article highlights bottom-up synthetic strategies to fine-tune the Al incorporation in zeolites, interpreted with respect to thermodynamic and kinetic aspects. They include (i) variation in extra-framework components in zeolite synthesis, (ii) isomorphous substitution of other heteroatoms in the zeolite framework, and (iii) control over the (alumino)silicate network in the initial synthesis mixture via in situ and ex situ methods. Most synthetic approaches introduced here tentatively showed that the energy barriers associated with Al incorporation in zeolites can be variable during zeolite crystallization processes, occurring in complex media with multiple chemical interactions. Although the generic interpretation of each strategy and underlying crystallization mechanism remains largely unknown (and often limited to a specific framework), this review will provide guidance on more efficient methods to prepare fine-tuned zeolites with desired chemical properties.

Recent progress in performance optimization of Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of NOx

Nitrogen oxides (NO_x), which are the major gaseous pollutants emitted by mobile sources, especially diesel engines, contribute to many environmental issues and harm human health. Selective catalytic reduction of NO_x with NH₃ (NH₃-SCR) is proved to be one of the most efficient techniques for reducing NO_x emission. Recently, Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst has been recognized as a promising candidate for NH₃-SCR catalyst for reducing diesel engine NO_x emissions due to its wide active temperature window and excellent hydrothermal stability. Despite being commercialized as an advanced selective catalytic reduction catalyst, Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst still confronts the challenges of low-temperature activity and hydrothermal aging to meet the increasing demands on catalytic performance and lifetime. Therefore, numerous studies have been dedicated to the improvement of NH₃-SCR performance for Cu-SSZ-13 catalyst. In this review, the recent progress in NH₃-SCR performance optimization of Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts is summarized following three aspects: 1) modifying the Cu active sites; 2) introducing the heteroatoms or metal oxides; 3) regulating the morphology. Meanwhile, future perspectives and opportunities of Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts in reducing diesel engine NO_x emissions are discussed.

First-Generation Organic Reaction Intermediates in Zeolite Chemistry and Catalysis

Zeolite chemistry and catalysis are expected to play a decisive role in the next decade(s) to build a more decentralized renewable feedstock-dependent sustainable society owing to the increased scrutiny over carbon emissions. Therefore, the lack of fundamental and mechanistic understanding of these processes is a critical "technical bottleneck" that must be eliminated to maximize economic value and minimize waste. We have identified, considering this objective, that the chemistry related to the first-generation reaction intermediates (i.e., carbocations, radicals, carbenes, ketenes, and carbanions) in zeolite chemistry and catalysis is highly underdeveloped or undervalued compared to other catalysis streams (e.g., homogeneous catalysis). This limitation can often be attributed to the technological restrictions to detect such "short-lived and highly reactive" intermediates at the interface (gas-solid/solid-liquid); however, the recent rise of sophisticated spectroscopic/analytical techniques (including under in situ/operando conditions) and modern data analysis methods collectively compete to unravel the impact of these organic intermediates. This comprehensive review summarizes the state-of-the-art first-generation organic reaction intermediates in zeolite chemistry and catalysis and evaluates their existing challenges and future prospects, to contribute significantly to the "circular carbon economy" initiatives.

MoO3 Nanobelt-Modified HMCM-49 Zeolite with Enhanced Dispersion of Mo Species and Catalytic Performance for Methane Dehydro-Aromatization

The methane dehydro-aromatization reaction (MDA) is a promising methane valorization process due to the conversion of methane to value-added aromatics (benzene, toluene and naphthalene). However, one of the major disadvantages of utilizing zeolite in MDA is that the catalyst is rapidly inactivated due to coke formation, which eventually causes the activity and aromatic selectivity to decrease. Consequently, the process is not conducive to large-scale industrial applications. The reasonable control of Mo site distribution on the zeolite surface is the key factor for partially inhibiting the coking of the catalyst and improving stability. Here, MoO₃ nanobelts can be used for alternative Mo precursors to prepare MDA catalysts. Catalysts modified with MoO₃ nanobelts present higher activity (13.4%) and benzene yield (9.2%) than those catalysts loaded with commercial MoO₃.

Dealumination of small-pore zeolites through pore-opening migration process with the aid of pore-filler stabilization

Small-pore zeolites are gaining increasing attention owing to their superior catalytic performance. Despite being critical for the catalytic activity and lifetime, postsynthetic tuning of bulk Si/Al ratios of small-pore zeolites has not been achieved with well-preserved crystallinity because of the limited mass transfer of aluminum species through narrow micropores. Here, we demonstrate a postsynthetic approach to tune the composition of small-pore zeolites using a previously unexplored strategy named pore-opening migration process (POMP). Acid treatment assisted by stabilization of the zeolite framework by organic cations in pores is proven to be successful for the removal of Al species from zeolite via POMP. Furthermore, the dealuminated AFX zeolite is treated via defect healing, which yields superior hydrothermal stability against severe steam conditions. Our findings could facilitate industrial applications of small-pore zeolites via aluminum content control and defect healing and could elucidate the structural reconstruction and arrangement processes for inorganic microporous materials.

Simultaneous Removal of Heavy Metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, Ni, Zn and Pb) from Aqueous Solutions Using Thermally Treated Romanian Zeolitic Volcanic Tuff

Increased concentrations of heavy metals in the environment are of public health concern, their removal from waters receiving considerable interest. The aim of this paper was to study the simultaneous adsorption of heavy metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, Ni, Zn and Pb) from aqueous solutions using the zeolitic volcanic tuffs as adsorbents. The effect of thermal treatment temperature, particle size and initial metal concentrations on the metal ions sorption was investigated. The selectivity of used zeolite for the adsorption of studied heavy metals followed the order: Pb > Cr > Cu > Zn > Cd > Ni. The removal efficiency of the heavy metals was strongly influenced by the particle sizes, the samples with smaller particle size (0−0.05 mm) being more efficient in heavy metals removal than those with larger particle size (1−3 mm). Generally, no relevant changes were observed in heavy metals removal efficiency for the treatment temperatures of 200 °C and 350 °C. Moreover, at a higher temperature (550 °C), a decrease in the removal efficiencies was observed. The Cd, Zn, Cu, Cr, Zn and Ni sorption was best described by Langmuir model according to the high values of correlation coefficient. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model presented the best correlation of the experimental data.

Effect of crystal size on the acidity of nanometric Y zeolite: number of sites, strength, acid nature, and dehydration of 2-propanol

Crystallinity damage in acid Y zeolite affects the direct relationship between the number of acid sites or conversion of 2-propanol and the zeolite size and the selectivity of 2-propene in nanosized Y zeolite.

Nano-sized H-ZSM-5 zeolite catalyzes aldol condensation reaction to prepare methyl acrylate and acrylic acid

An efficient and long-term stable nano-sized N-H-ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst for the one-step aldol condensation reaction of formaldehyde and MAc to produce MA and AA is reported. Its total lifetime reaches up to 226 h by three regeneration runs.

"Open" Nonporous Nonasil Zeolite Structure for Selective Catalysis

Nonasil (NON-type framework) zeolite, having inner large cages but only 6-ring (R) apertures, is recognized as a nonporous material without practical application values as catalysts or adsorbents. A novel bottom-up structural construction strategy assisted with well-designed Gemini-type surfactant is proposed to "open" the non cages, constructing two novel NON-related structures with accessible and stable acid sites. The obtained derivant (named as ECNU-27) possessed hierarchical porosity with short-range ordered 8-R micropores and abundant intercrystal mesopores, serving as a promising catalyst for the 1-butene cracking to lower alkenes.

Development of Sustainable Catalytic Pathways for Furan Derivatives

Biomass, the only globally available, renewable feedstock of organic carbon, is considered a viable alternative to fossil fuels. It can be efficiently utilized to produce various building blocks in accordance with green and sustainable chemistry principles. In this review, recent progress, such as the transformation of carbohydrates (C5 or C6 sugar, inulin, and cellulose) and their derivatives (furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural) into significant platform chemicals over polyoxometalates, zeolites, non-noble metals, and ionic liquids in single or multiphase, is evaluated.

Nanoarchitectonics for Hierarchical Fullerene Nanomaterials

Nanoarchitectonics is a universal concept to fabricate functional materials from nanoscale building units. Based on this concept, fabrications of functional materials with hierarchical structural motifs from simple nano units of fullerenes (C60 and C70 molecules) are described in this review article. Because fullerenes can be regarded as simple and fundamental building blocks with mono-elemental and zero-dimensional natures, these demonstrations for hierarchical functional structures impress the high capability of the nanoarchitectonics approaches. In fact, various hierarchical structures such as cubes with nanorods, hole-in-cube assemblies, face-selectively etched assemblies, and microstructures with mesoporous frameworks are fabricated by easy fabrication protocols. The fabricated fullerene assemblies have been used for various applications including volatile organic compound sensing, microparticle catching, supercapacitors, and photoluminescence systems.
