Abstract
The 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (BTD) unit is a prominent building block commonly used in various research areas such as optoelectronics and bioimaging. Despite its great versatility, the development of strategies to elaborate BTD has been largely neglected, including exploring its reactivity and understanding how regioselective functionalization can be used to tune the fluorescence emission. Previous focus has primarily been on C4- or C4,C7-substitutions. Here, a series of unsymmetrical mono - and disubstituted BTDs was synthesized and characterized for their photophysical properties. The reaction scope includes all six possible substituent patterns on the BTD benzoid ring (C4-, C5-, C4,C5-, C4,C6-, C4,C7- and C5,C6-substitution), which comprise arrangements that previously been synthetically challenging to access. By introducing a methoxy and/or a phenyl group we demonstrate that the emissive behavior of BTD derivatives strongly depends on the position of the substituent (s). We show that regioselective substitution on BTD can engender long-lived fluorescence and circumvent strong fluorescence quenching in polar protic solvents, which is a limitation of many previously described BTD derivatives.

Abstract
Medium viscosity strongly affects the dynamics of solvated species and can drastically alter the deactivation pathways of their excited states. This study demonstrates the utility of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) as a room-temperature solid-state medium for optical spectroscopy. As a thermoset elastic polymer, PDMS is transparent in the near ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared spectral regions. It is easy to mould into any shape, forming surfaces with a pronounced smoothness. While PDMS is broadly used for the fabrication of microfluidic devices, it swells in organic solvents, presenting severe limitations for the utility of such devices for applications employing non-aqueous fluids. Nevertheless, this swelling is reversible, which proves immensely beneficial for loading samples into the PDMS solid matrix. Transferring molecular-rotor dyes (used for staining prokaryotic cells and amyloid proteins) from non-viscous solvents into PDMS induces orders-of-magnitude enhancement of their fluorescence quantum yield and excited-state lifetimes, providing mechanistic insights about their deactivation pathways. These findings demonstrate the unexplored potential of PDMS as a solid solvent for optical applications.

Solvent-polarity dependence of ultrafast excited-state dynamics of trans-4-nitrostilbene. Phys Chem Chem Phys 2024; 26:788-807. Abstract
Ultrafast excited-state dynamics of the simplest nitrostilbenes, namely trans-4-nitrostilbene (t-NSB), was studied in solvents of various polarities with ultrafast broadband time-resolved fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopies, and by quantum-chemical computations. The results revealed that the initially excited S1(ππ*) state deactivation dynamics is strongly influenced by the solvent polarity. Specifically, the t-NSB S1-state lifetime decreases by three orders of magnitude from ∼60 ps in high-polarity solvents to ∼60 fs in nonpolar solvents. The strong solvent-polarity dependence arises from the differences in dipole moments among the S1 and relevant states, including the major intersystem crossing (ISC) receiver triplet states, and therefore, the solvent polarity can modulate their relative energies and ISC rates. In nonpolar solvents, the sub-100 fs lifetime is due to a combination of efficient ISC and internal conversion. In medium-polarity solvents, the S1-state population decays via a competing ISC relaxation mechanism in a biphasic manner, and the ISC rates are found to obey the inverse energy gap law of the strong coupling case. In high-polarity solvents, the S1 state is stabilized to a much lower energy such that ISC becomes energetically infeasible, and the S1 state decays via barrier crossing along the torsion angle of the central ethylenic bond to the nonfluorescent perpendicular configuration. Regardless of the initial S1-state deactivation pathways in various solvents, the excited-state population is ultimately trapped in the metastable T1-state perpendicular configuration, at which a slower ISC occurs to bring the system to the ground state and bifurcate into either trans or cis form of NSB.

Abstract
Dipyrrolonaphthyridinediones (DPNDs) entered the chemical world in 2016. This cross-conjugated donor-acceptor skeleton can be prepared in two steps from commercially available reagents in overall yield ≈15-20% (5 mmol scale). DPNDs can be easily and regioselectively halogenated which opens an avenue to numerous derivatives as well as to π-expansion. Although certain synthetic limitations exist, the current derivatization possibilities provided impetus for numerous explorations that use DPNDs. Structural modifications enable bathochromic shift of the emission to deep-red region and reaching the optical brightness 30 000 M-1 cm-1. Intense absorption and strong emission of greenish-yellow light attracted the interest which eventually led to the discovery of their strong two-photon absorption, singlet fission in the crystalline phase and triplet sensitization. Dipyrrolonaphthyridinedione-based twistacenes broadened our knowledge on the influence of twisting angle on the fate of the molecule in the excited state. Collectively, these findings highlight the compatibility of DPNDs with various applications within organic optoelectronics.

Abstract
Strong fluorescence is a general feature of dipyrrolonaphthyridinediones bearing two nitrophenyl substituents. Methyl groups simultaneously being weakly electron-donating and inducing steric hindrance appear to be a key structural parameter that allows for significant emission enhancement, whereas Et2N groups cause fluorescence quenching. The magnitude of two-photon absorption increases if 4-nitrophenyl substituents are present while the contribution of Et2N groups is detrimental.

Abstract
Photosensitizers that display "unusual" emission from upper electronically excited states offer possibilities for initiating higher-energy processes than what the governing Kasha's rule postulates. Achieving conditions for dual fluorescence from multiple states of the same species requires molecular design and conditions that favorably tune the excited-state dynamics. Herein, we switch the position of the electron-donating NMe2 group around the core of benzo[g]coumarins (BgCoum) and tune the electronic coupling and the charge-transfer character of the fluorescent excited states. For solvents with intermediate polarity, three of the four regioisomers exhibit fluorescence from two different excited states with bands that are well separated in the visible and the near-infrared spectral regions. Computational analysis, employing ab initio methods, reveals that the orientation of an ester on the pyrone ring produces two conformers responsible for the observed dual fluorescence. Studies with solid solvating media, which restricts the conformational degrees of freedom, concur with the computational findings. These results demonstrate how "seemingly inconsequential" auxiliary substituents, such as the esters on the pyrone coumarin rings, can have profound effects leading to "anti-Kasha" photophysical behavior important for molecular photonics, materials engineering, and solar-energy science.

Abstract
Solvatofluorochromic molecules provide strikingly high fluorescent outputs to monitor a wide range of biological, environmental, or materials-related sensing processes. Here, thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (TTz) fluorophores equipped with simple alkylamino and nitrophenyl substituents for solid-state, high-performance chemo-responsive sensing applications are reported. Nitroaromatic substituents are known to strongly quench dye fluorescence, however, the TTz core subtly modulates intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) enabling strong, locally excited-state fluorescence in non-polar conditions. In polar media, a planar ICT excited-state shows near complete quenching, enabling a twisted excited-state emission to be observed. These unique fluorescent properties (spectral shifts of 0.13 - 0.87 eV and large transition dipole moments Δµ = 20.4 - 21.3 D) are leveraged to develop highly sought-after chemo-responsive, organic vapor optical sensors. The sensors are developed by embedding the TTz fluorophores within a poly(styrene-isoprene-styrene) block copolymer to form fluorescent dye/polymer composites (ΦF = 70 - 97%). The composites respond reversibly to a comprehensive list of organic solvents and show low vapor concentration sensing (e.g., 0.04% solvent saturation vapor pressure of THF - 66 ppm). The composite films can distinguish between solvent vapors with near complete fluorescent quenching observed when exposed to their saturated solvent vapor pressures, making this an extremely promising material for optical chemo-responsive sensing.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and photophysical characterization of novel halogenated dipyrrolonaphthyridine-diones (X2 -DPNDs, X = Cl, Br, and I), as candidates for photodynamic therapy (PDT) application. Apart from the heavy atom-induced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) dynamics in the investigated X2 -DPNDs, it was found that the position of the halogen atom (relative to the nitrogen of the pyrrole ring) also influenced the triplet excited state behavior. Interestingly, the faster/efficiency sensitization of 3 O2 to 1 O2 using X2 -DPND correlates with the rate of triplet population, kISC >1.6 × 108 s-1 for I2 -DPND vs kISC >2.9 × 109 s-1 for Cl2 -DPND and Br2 -DPND (where τISC = 343 ± 3 ps for I2 -DPND and τISC = 5-6 ns for Cl2 -DPND and Br2 -DPND are the lowest time constants/values for ISC). Furthermore, the heavy atom-induced SOC in Cl2 -DPND and Br2 -DPND did not lead to a reduction of the corresponding fluorescence (ca 75% vs 67% for the parent DPND). The attractive photophysical characteristics of Cl2 /Br2 -DPND put them on the landscape as not only promising PDT agents but also as fluorescence probes. The present study is a stepping stone in the development of novel organic photosystems for synergistic photomedicinal applications.

Abstract
This review article presents different electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical techniques used to investigate conjugated polymers. The development of this research area is presented from an over 40-year perspective-the period of research carried out by Professor Mieczyslaw Lapkowski. Initial research involved polymers derived from simple aromatic compounds, such as polyaniline. Since then, scientific advances in the field of conductive polymers have led to the development of so-called organic electronics. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods have a great influence in the development of organic semiconductors. Their potential for explaining many phenomena is discussed and the most relevant examples are provided.

Abstract
Dipyrrolonaphthyridinedione (DPND) thin films exhibit interesting photophysical properties and singlet fission (SF) processes. A recent experimental work found that the alkyl substitution in the DPND skeleton has the remarkable influence on the characteristics of electronic absorption spectra and SF rates. Here, we theoretically elucidate the microscopic mechanism of the substituent effect on the optical properties and exciton dynamics of materials by combining the electronic structure calculations and the quantum dynamics simulations. The results show that the alkyl substituent has a minor effect on the single molecular properties but dramatically changes those of DPND aggregates via varying the intermolecular interactions. The aggregates of DPND with and without alkyl side chains exhibit the more likely characters of H-type aggregations. In the former (DPND6), the weak degree of mixing of intramolecular localized excited (LE) states and intermolecular charge transfer (CT) states makes the low-energy absorption band possess the predominant optical absorption, while in the latter (DPND), the CT and LE states are close in energy, together with their strong interaction, resulting in the substantial state-mixing, so that its two low-energy absorption bands have nearly equal oscillator strengths and a wide energy spacing of more than 0.5 eV. The simulation of exciton dynamics elucidates that the photoinitiated states in both aggregates cannot generate the free charge carrier because of the lack of enough driving forces. However, the population exchanges between LE and CT states in DPND aggregates are much faster than in DPND6 aggregates, indicating the different SF behaviors, consistent with the experimental observation.

Abstract
This communication describes the photophysical behavior of three analogs of cyclophane bearing the dipyrrolonaphthyridinedione (DPND) core. In these molecules, intersystem crossing (ISC) can be successfully induced by distinct changes in the deviation from planarity within the DPND core, allowing at the same time the emission maximum to shift from the green to red region of the visible spectrum without any synthetic modifications of the chromophore structure. This finding may build the foundation for a new paradigm for inducing ISC-type transitions within other centrosymmetric and planar cross-conjugated chromophores.

Abstract
Natural dyes and pigments offer incomparable diversity of structures and functionalities, making them an excellent source of inspiration for the design and development of synthetic chromophores with a myriad of emerging properties. Formed during maturation of red wines, pyranoanthocyanins are electron-deficient cationic pyranoflavylium dyes with broad absorption in the visible spectral region and pronounced chemical and photostability. Herein, we survey the optical and electrochemical properties of synthetic pyranoflavylium dyes functionalized with different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups, which vary their reduction potentials over a range of about 400 mV. Despite their highly electron-deficient cores, the exploration of pyranoflavyliums as photosensitizers has been limited to the "classical" n-type dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) where they act as electron donors. In light of their electrochemical and spectroscopic properties, however, these biomimetic synthetic dyes should prove to be immensely beneficial as chromophores in p-type DSSCs, where their ability to act as photooxidants, along with their pronounced photostability, can benefit key advances in solar-energy science and engineering.

Abstract
Through the combination of transient spectroscopy and theoretical simulations, an accelerated singlet fission (SF) process was evidently observed in the strongly coupled H-type-like aggregation thin films of a dipyrrolonaphthyridinedione skeleton. Results elucidate that in this H-type-like aggregation, the substantially stabilized charge transfer (CT) state is close in energy with singlet and excimer states, resulting in a CT/excimer mixed state, which could drive excited-state population escaping from excimer trap and promote an ultrafast and highly efficient SF process. Our results not only enrich the limited capacity of SF materials but also contribute to an in-depth understanding of SF dynamics in H-type aggregation, which is of fundamental importance for designing new SF sensitizers and implementing practical SF applications.

Abstract
Nitroaromatic compounds are inherently nonfluorescent, and the subpicosecond lifetimes of the singlet excited states of many small nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, such as nitronaphthalenes, render them unfeasible for photosensitizers and photo-oxidants, despite their immensely beneficial reduction potentials. This article reports up to a 7000-fold increase in the singlet-excited-state lifetime of 1-nitronaphthalene upon attaching an amine or an N-amide to the ring lacking the nitro group. Varying the charge-transfer (CT) character of the excited states and the medium polarity balances the decay rates along the radiative and the two nonradiative pathways and can make these nitronaphthalene derivatives fluoresce. The strong electron-donating amine suppresses intersystem crossing (ISC) but accommodates CT pathways of nonradiate deactivation. Conversely, the N-amide does not induce a pronounced CT character but slows down ISC enough to achieve relatively long lifetimes of the singlet excited state. These paradigms are key for the pursuit of electron-deficient (n-type) organic conjugates with promising optical characteristics.
