Monitoring single Au38 nanocluster reactions via electrochemiluminescence

Intensified electrochemiluminescence and photoluminescence via supramolecular anion recognition interactions

Herein, intensified electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and photoluminescence (PL) via supramolecular anion recognition interactions are demonstrated. A bisindolylpyrrole derivative with a structure containing two indole groups and 2-hexyl-pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,3(2H,5H)-dione, BIPPD, was designed and synthesized de novo to induce the enhanced ECL and PL emission based on hydrogen bonding interactions with the dihydrogen phosphate anion. Remarkably, the ECL quantum efficiency and PL quantum yield were discovered to increase up to 5.5-fold and 1.5-fold, respectively, via this anion coordination. Dopant PF6 - was found not to form hydrogen bonds, while HSO4 - doping does slightly with the receptor molecule. There was no enhancement in either ECL or PL in both scenarios, revealing great recognition selectivity of the synthesized BIPPD. Mechanistic studies via 1H NMR, ECL, and PL spectra illustrated that the ECL processes varied in the presence and absence of H2PO4 - doping, thus leading to the understanding of enhanced efficiency. The bisindolylpyrrole derivative will find applications in supramolecular and analytical chemistry via controlled hydrogen bonding interactions.

Unlocking Single Particle Anisotropy in Real-Time for Photoelectrochemistry Processes at the Nanoscale

The key to rationally and rapidly designing high-performance materials is the monitoring and comprehension of dynamic processes within individual particles in real-time, particularly to gain insight into the anisotropy of nanoparticles. The intrinsic property of nanoparticles typically varies from one crystal facet to the next under realistic working conditions. Here, we introduce the operando collision electrochemistry to resolve the single silver nanoprisms (Ag NPs) anisotropy in photoelectrochemistry. We directly identify the effect of anisotropy on the plasmonic-assisted electrochemistry at the single NP/electrolyte interface. The statistical collision frequency shows that heterogeneous diffusion coefficients among crystal facets facilitate Ag NPs to undergo direction-dependent mass transfer toward the gold ultramicroelectrode. Subsequently, the current amplitudes of transient events indicate that the anisotropy enables variations in dynamic interfacial electron transfer behaviors during photothermal processes. The results presented here demonstrate that the measurement precision of collision electrochemistry can be extended to the sub-nanoparticle level, highlighting the potential for high-throughput material screening with comprehensive kinetics information at the nanoscale.

Synchronous Metal Rearrangement on Two-Dimensional Equatorial Surfaces of Au-Cu Alloy Nanoclusters

Understanding the growth of nanoclusters and the relationship between structure-activity depends on the precise arrangement of metals on their surface. In this work, we realized the synchronous rearrangement of metal atoms on the equatorial plane of Au-Cu alloy nanoclusters. Upon adsorption of the phosphine ligand, the Cu atoms on the equatorial plane of the Au₅₂Cu₇₂(SPh)₅₅ nanocluster are irreversibly rearranged. The whole metal rearrangement process can be understood from a synchronous metal rearrangement mechanism initiated by the adsorption of the phosphine ligand. Furthermore, this metal rearrangement can effectively improve the efficiency of A³ coupling reactions without increasing the amount of catalyst.

Mass Transport and Electron Transfer at the Electrochemical-Confined Interface

Single entity measurements based on the stochastic collision electrochemistry provide a promising and versatile means to study single molecules, single particles, single droplets, etc. Conceptually, mass transport and electron transfer are the two main processes at the electrochemically confined interface that underpin the most transient electrochemical responses resulting from the stochastic and discrete behaviors of single entities at the microscopic scale. This perspective demonstrates how to achieve controllable stochastic collision electrochemistry by effectively altering the two processes. Future challenges and opportunities for stochastic collision electrochemistry are also highlighted.

Electrochemiluminescence nanoemitters for immunoassay of protein biomarkers

The family of electrochemiluminescent luminophores has witnessed quick development since the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) phenomenon of silicon nanoparticles was first reported in 2002. Moreover, these developed ECL nanoemitters have extensively been applied in sensitive detection of protein biomarker by combining with immunological recognition. This review firstly summarized the origin and development of various ECL nanoemitters including inorganic and organic nanomaterials, with an emphasis on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based ECL nanoemitters. Several effective strategies to amplify the ECL response of nanoemitters and improve the sensitivity of immunosensing were discussed. The application of ECL nanoemitters in immunoassay of protein biomarkers for diagnosis of cancers and other diseases, especially lung cancer and heart diseases, was comprehensively presented. The recent development of ECL imaging with the nanoemitters as ECL tags for detection of multiplex protein biomarkers on single cell membrane also attracted attention. Finally, the future opportunities and challenges in the ECL biosensing field were highlighted.

Horizontal expansion of biicosahedral M13-based nanoclusters: resolving decades-long questions

For metal nanoclusters with the "cluster of clusters" intramolecular evolution pattern, most efforts have been made towards the vertical superposition of icosahedral nanobuilding blocks (e.g., from mono-icosahedral Au₁₃ to bi-icosahedral Au₂₅ and tri-icosahedral Au₃₇), while the horizontal expansion of these rod-shaped multi-icosahedral aggregates was largely neglected. We herein report the horizontal expansion of the biicosahedral M₂₅ cluster framework, yielding an [Au₁₉Ag₁₂(S-Adm)₆(DPPM)₆Cl₇]²⁺ nanocluster that contains an Au₁₃Ag₁₂ kernel and six Au₁(DPPM)₁(S-Adm)₁ peripheral wings. The structural determination of [Au₁₉Ag₁₂(S-Adm)₆(DPPM)₆Cl₇]²⁺ resolved a decades-long question towards rod-shaped multi-icosahedral aggregates: how to load bidentate phosphine and bulky thiol ligands onto the nanocluster framework? The structural comparison between [Au₁₉Ag₁₂(S-Adm)₆(DPPM)₆Cl₇]²⁺ and previously reported [Au₁₃Ag₁₂(PPh₃)₁₀Cl₈]²⁺ or [Au₁₃Ag₁₂(SR)₅(PPh₃)₁₀Cl₂]²⁺ rationalized the unique packing of Au₁(DPPM)₁(S-Adm)₁ motif structures on the surface of the former nanocluster. Overall, this work presents the horizontal expansion of rod-shaped multi-icosahedral nanoclusters, which provides new insights into the preparation of novel icosahedron-based aggregates with both vertically and horizontally growing extensions.

Dual-Mechanism Quenching of Electrochemiluminescence Immunosensor Based on a Novel ECL Emitter Polyoxomolybdate-Zirconia for 17β-Estradiol Detection

The exploration of novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) reagents has been a breakthrough work in ECL immunoassay. In this work, the ECL properties of polyoxomolybdate-zirconia (POM-ZrO₂) were discovered for the first time and their luminescence mechanism was initially explored. Virgulate POM-ZrO₂ was synthesized from phosphomolybdic acid hydrate and zirconium oxychloride by solvothermal method, which achieved intense and stabilized cathode ECL emission at a negative potential. Polyaniline@Au nanocrystals (PANI@AuNPs) as the executor of the dual-mechanism quenching strategy were used to reduce the output signal. The quenching efficiency was significantly enhanced by the dual mechanisms of ECL energy transfer and electron transfer. Specifically, PANI@AuNPs can serve as an energy receptor to absorb the energy emitted by POM-ZrO₂ (energy donor), while the appropriate energy level can be regarded as the condition for electron transfer to quench the ECL intensity of POM-ZrO₂. Herein, the proposed dual-mechanism quenching strategy was applied to the immunoassay of 17β-estradiol by constructing a competitive immunosensor. As expected, the immunosensor demonstrated favorable analytical performance and a wide sensing range from 0.01 pg/mL to 200 ng/mL. Hence, it provides a novel method for the sensitive analysis of other biomolecules, such as disease markers and environmental estrogens.

Enhanced Electrochemiluminescence of A Macrocyclic Tetradentate Chelate Pt(II) Molecule via Its Collisional Interactions with the Electrode

A macrocyclic tetradentate chelate Pt(II) molecule (Pt1) served as an excellent luminophore in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) processes. The blue ECL of Pt1/S2O82- coreactant system in N,N'-dimethylformamide was found to be 46 times higher than that of the Ru(bpy)2+/S2O82- system or 30 times higher than that of the 9,10-diphenylanthracene/S2O82- system. The unprecedented high ECL quantum efficiencies were caused by the cyclic generation of monomer excited states through collisional interactions of Pt1 molecules with the electrode at an elevated frequency. The ECL is tunable from bright blue to pure white by simply changing the solvent from N,N'-dimethylformamide to dichloromethane. The white ECL of Pt(II) molecule was reported for the first time and the mechanism was proposed to be the simultaneous emissions from the monomer excited state (blue) and excimer (red).

Seeing Is Not Believing: Filtering Effects on Random Nature in Electrochemical Measurements of Single-Entity Collision

To clarify the discrete nature of electrochemistry, single-entity electrochemistry of collision (SEEC) utilizes a confinement space in a nanoscale local electric field at a microscale electrode interface for characterizing single freely diffusing entities. This promising method provides new insights at the single entity level. However, the precise measurement is challenging because of the short residence time and wide current fluctuations caused by the dynamic and stochastic motion of a single entity at the interface of the electrode. Moreover, the enormous noise in the electrochemical system would submerge these weak transient electrochemical signals. To increase the signal-to-noise ratio, the low-pass filter (LPF) is often used but at the cost of lower temporal resolution. Therefore, a deeper understanding of the filtering effects on the electrochemical signal is required in SEEC. Here, we build a random walk model to simulate the dynamic electrochemical oxidation of individual silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the local electric field near the electrode. This model considers the effect of the effective potential during the interaction between NP and electrode. Results reveal that the shape of the signal is seriously distorted as the cutoff frequency (f _c) of LPF is set at <20 kHz. Due to the filtering effects, hundreds of subpeaks originating from the dynamic motion of NP are merged in a simple peak, which muddies our "believing" from the "seeing" signals. However, the entire interaction time of single NPs with the electrodes can be acquired at f _c ≥ 10 kHz. Moreover, an integral charge of the signal is conserved at any LPF, which enables quantitative analysis of SEEC. Our understanding of the filtering effect on single AgNPs oxidation is generally applicable to nano-electrochemical techniques (e.g., nanopore electrochemistry and nanopipette sensing) that generate transient current signals.

Surface environment complication makes Ag29 nanoclusters more robust and leads to their unique packing in the supracrystal lattice

Silver nanoclusters have received unprecedented attention in cluster science owing to their promising functionalities and intriguing physical/chemical properties. However, essential instability significantly impedes their extensive applications. We herein propose a strategy termed “surface environment complication” to endow Ag₂₉ nanoclusters with high robustness. The Ag₂₉(S-Adm)₁₈(PPh₃)₄ nanocluster with monodentate PPh₃ ligands was extremely unstable and uncrystallizable. By substituting PPh₃ with bidentate PPh₂py with dual coordination sites (i.e., P and N), the Ag₂₉ cluster framework was twisted because of the generation of N–Ag interactions, and three NO₃ ligands were further anchored onto the nanocluster surface, yielding a new Ag₂₉(S-Adm)₁₅(NO₃)₃(PPh₂py)₄ nanocluster with high stability. The metal-control or ligand-control effects on stabilizing the Ag₂₉ nanocluster were further evaluated. Besides, Ag₂₉(S-Adm)₁₅(NO₃)₃(PPh₂py)₄ followed a unique packing mode in the supracrystal lattice with several intercluster channels, which has yet been observed in other M₂₉ cluster crystals. Overall, this work presents a new approach (i.e., surface environment complication) for tailoring the surface environment and improving the stability of metal nanoclusters.
